Opal Mae Gross--Lakin

(January 14, 1908 - January 2, 2011)

Opal Mae Gross, age 102, died Sunday, Jan. 2, 2011 at the Kearny County Hospital in Lakin, Kansas. She was born January 14, 1908 in Eldon, Missouri the daughter of William S. and Florence A. Eads Schwabedissen. On December 25, 1946 she moved to Garden City from Parsons, Kansas. In 1949 she moved to Stockton, Missouri and lived there for 18 years before moving back to Garden City in 1967. She was a homemaker and worked as a finisher for dry cleaners in Parsons from 1928-1938.

She was a member of the First United Methodist Church and was involved with her Sunday school class, the Godmothers and the Fairbairn Circle. She also belonged to the Finney County Farm Bureau all of Garden City, Kansas.

On December 29, 1929 she married Frank Waits. He died February 1, 1967 in Springfield, Missouri. Then on June 7, 1969 she married Ralph Gross. He died April 25, 1999 in Garden City, Kansas. Survivors Include: Two Grandsons, Mark Hays of Garden City, Kansas and Stephen Kelly (& Debbie) Hays of Garden City, Kansas; Three Great-Grandchildren, Jaime Bradford of Garden City, Kansas, Caitlin Hays of Albuquerque, New Mexico and Bryan (& Carrie) Hays of Shawnee, Kansas and One Great-Great-Granddaughter, Carlye Hays of Shawnee, Kansas.

She was preceded in death by her Daughter, Mary Lou Hays, One Sister, Clara Moss and One Brother, Billy Schwabedissen.

Funeral Services will be held at 10:30am on Wednesday, January 5, 2011 at the First United Methodist Church in Garden City, Kansas with the Rev. David Bell presiding.

Interment will be held in the Valley View Cemetery in Garden City, Kansas.

Friends may call from 10:00am-8:00pm Tuesday at the Price & Sons Funeral Home in Garden City, Kansas.

The family requests memorials be given to the FUMC God Mothers in care of Price & Sons Funeral Home.
