Dying

Folks, this blog is dying. I have no intentions of ever writing much in it ever again. I appreciate the fact that so many of you are continuing to come back here and look for new postings. It took just a couple of people to ruin it forever. From now on, I am still writing as I did in my blog but instead of hanging it out here for everyone to read, I am emailing it out to those who have requested it. If you have not already sent me your name and email address, please send those to me at slblaus@gmail.com and I will add you to my list.

So far, three newsletters have been sent out. Another will be coming out very soon.

Thank you sooo much for your loyalty to me and my blog!!!

My Newsletter

Hello, All!

It is a BEAUTIFUL day here! Our high today is supposed to be in the lower 80s. People are predicting that we have seen the last of our 100 plus degree temperatures for 2011. I sure hope that that is a fact. We have been miserable for what seems like an eternity. These cooler temperatures are helping me to feel much better than I have in a couple of months.

First of all, I just want to thank all of you who have called, emailed me, etc about the finalization of my blog. Your thoughts have been so very sweet. I am realizing how many people out there appreciated various things that I posted for the past couple of months. For personal reasons, I have decided against blogging but I will send out a newsletter to any of you who are interested in keeping up with our happenings around here. If you are interested in receiving this, please send me your name and email address. I would also like to know what kinds of information you are interested in, for example, the movie at the Star in Tribune, obituaries, etc.

Send that information to me at the following address:

slblaus@gmail.com

I appreciate your loyalty to me a whole bunch!!!

Project Has Expanded

Earlier this week, I mentioned that we were now involved in a repair of our kitchen's ceramic tile floor. We had thought that our 2-year-old dishwasher must've caused a leak that was "softening" our kitcher floor in the corner where the dishwasher and sink are. Stan began the project yesterday morning and quickly learned that the dishwasher was not at fault. Instead, we had a MAJOR water leak underneath the kitchen floor. Instead of the water going down, it was being directed straight up. Stan fixed that problem yesterday. Little by little and lot by lot, the water was destroying the floor. What we learned today is that the damage is much more severe than we had thought. The damage has expanded to underneath our northern cabinets, underneath our refrigerator and off towards the center of the room. When Stan moved our much-larger-than-normal refrigerator out of where it normally stands, we discovered that the damage had eaten a large hole out of the floor where the refrigerator sits. We are sooo fortunate that the appliance had not fallen through the floor!!!

Today, Stan has worked to remove all of the ceramic tile off of the floor so that he could guage just how much of the floor needs to be ripped out and re-built. Most of that tile could not be removed without it breaking. That particular tile is no longer being made which means that we now have to purchase tiles or some form of laminate to cover what will be the new floor.

Bottom line is that this news has not made any of us happy. Stan has to go back to work next Monday. The repairs have to be done before then. Stan has to figure out just everything that must be done very soon. Right now, one of our countertops is being held up where it belongs by jacks. We just re-did our kitchen countertops and cabinets less than 2 years ago. It is imperative that we make sure that none of the counters, etc are ruined while we work on the floor repairs.

Please say a prayer or two for us tonight. We are REALLY struggling with this issue...

Marshmallows and Graham Crackers

Ancient Egyptians were the first to enjoy a gooey treat now called marshmallow as early as 2000 BC. The treat was considered very special and was reserved for gods and royalty.

Marshmallow was made from the mallow plant (Athacea officinalis) that grows wild in marshes. The term marshmallow was derived from the native home of the plant and the plant name. Mallow is native to Asia and Europe and has been naturalized in America. The Egyptians squeezed sap from the mallow plant and mixed it with nuts and honey. However, no one knows what the candy looked like in those times.

The French were introduced to marshmallow in the early to mid-1800s. Owners of small candy stores whipped sap from the mallow root into a fluffy candy mold. This time-consuming process was typically done by hand. Candy stores had a hard time keeping up with the demand. Candy makers started looking for a new process to make marshmallow molds made of modified cornstarch. At this same time, candy makers replaced the mallow root with gelatin and this created the marshmallow stable form.

In 1948, Alex Doumak revolutionized the process. He created and patented the extrusion process. This process involves taking the ingredients and running it through tubes. Afterwards, they are cut into equal pieces and packaged. Today, Americans are the main consumers of marshmallows. According to experts, Americans buy more than 90 million pounds annually.

History of Graham Crackers

Sylvester Graham invented Graham Crackers in 1829. Graham was a Presbyterian minister and avid vegetarian, who promoted the use of unsifted and coarsely ground wheat flour for its high fiber content. The flour was nicknamed "graham flour" after Minister Graham, the main ingredient in Graham Crackers.

Sylester Graham was born in West Suffield, Connecticut in 1795 and died in 1851.

S'Mores, Anyone?

We have enjoyed our fire pit on our patio for the past couple of years. One thing that we enjoy doing there often is to make s'mores. Just in case you don't know what s'mores are, I thought that I would give you the history of them.

If you're not familiar with s'mores, they are made by sandwiching a toasted marshmallow and a piece of chocolate in between the two graham crackers. The name of the treat comes from the two words "some more", clearly combined because people often wanted to have at least a second serving after having one s'more. The treat was developed by campers in the early part of the 20th century, making use of the fairly new mass-produced marshmallows. Marshmallows were easy to transport, as were candy bars and graham crackers, and the marshmallows could be warmed easily over a fire to make a delicious treat in a situation where other types of sweets would have been difficult to come by.

The true origin of the snack is unknown, as camping recipes tended to be passed from one person to another person and family to family. The first recipe for s'mores was published in 1927 in the Girl Scout Handbook and the event marked the official introduction of the s'mores into popular culture.

The publication of the s'mores recipe was not the first pairing of chocolate, marshmallows and cookies. In 1913, the Mallomar cookie was introduced to market, followed in 1917 by the Moon Pie. Both products have a graham cracker-like base--a sandwich, in the case of the Moon Pie--and are topped with marshmallows and a layer of chocolate.

One Way Street in Leoti

School begins in just a couple of weeks here. For the first time ever, the county's elementary school is located just across the street from the junior/senior high school. Back when the voters were considering whether or not to build a new grade school next to the high school, many of us were concerned about the traffic on the street in between the schools. It was determined that that street would become a one-way street. I, for one, am VERY happy with this decision!!! You should know that this one-way street does not go into operation the first day of school. It is already marked as one way and the Wichita County Sheriff's Department can issue tickets anytime any vehicle is traveling in the wrong direction. Vehicles have already been stopped there for going the wrong direction.

Also, the speed limit there is 15 mph.

You may have also noticed that the stop signs are now gone between Mel's and the RBSES.

Just thought that you might want to know...

What Next???

Stan began taking his vacation last Thursday. We have been very busy with fair events, etc. Yesterday, all of us were thoroughly exhausted so we spent most of our time asleep. This morning, Stan was ready to check out the cause of our "sinking" corner in the kitchen floor. At first, he thought that we must have had a leak underneath our dishwasher. I was not that convinced because the dishwasher is less than 2 years old. When Stan found no leak there, he investigated further. To do that, he ended up having to knock the rest of that portion of the floor. Once it was gone, we soon learned that the water was being sprayed upwards from one of our water lines. More flooring than what we had thought had been destroyed.

What is next? We had City Hall turn off our water at the meter. Stan is now repairing the leaks. Once he thinks that that has been accomplished, the water will be turned on again. If the problem has been repaired, we go to step 2 which will be to replace the ceramic tile backerboard so that we can lay out the new tile in that area. All of this sounds simple but I have learned in the past that our repairs are never that easy. LOL!

The good news is that Stan has a week off from work in which to work on this. It could be so much worse if the floor just fell through and we had to work on this while Stan was at his paying job also. We've had to do that before. Ha! Ha!
