Is Spring Over already???

I think most of us in our area have been pleased with the fine spring-like weather we've been having for the past few months.  Trees ae sprouting new leaves, floweing trees and shrubs are in full bloom and flower are all budded and many have already started blooming.  But today I learned that summer takes it place tomorrow.  On Sunday, April 1st, folks in Southwestern Kansas should expect temperatures aound the 94 mark.  Can you believe that???  The heat will be short-lived though.  Monday' high will be in the low 60s.  Get ready...

Expectations of Our Childrens Teachers

Today, more than ever, our American teachers have more pressure put on them than at any other time in our history.  Some teachers are up for the goal.  Others are not.  Here in Wichita County, most of our students not only meet the high standards put against them, many of them actually out-do them.  We can thank our teachers for "getting the job done".  Our teachers are excellent and have a great deal of pizzazz to do it all.  Their job doesn't begin at 8:00 in the morning and end at 4:00 in the afternoon.  Many of them continue to work in the evenings and on weekends.  They receive not one penny of overtime penny.  My mother, Donna Lou Pepper-Elder, has been teaching for OVER 50 years now.  She is an outstanding teacher with her Masters Degree who continues to make a major difference in her students' life that will last them throughout their entire lives.  To say that her family is proud of her is a major understatement.

Yesterday, my dear friend, "B", posted the following passage on FB.  I knew I just had to post it right here.

"We expect our teachers to reach unattainable goals with inadequate resources.  The miracle is this:  They often do it."

I am one parent who wants our teachers out there to know that I appreciate ALL of your hard work that you put out every year for our children and are rewarded with ridiculously low wages.  You ARE making wonderful differences in our children's lives.  Thank you!!!

HAPPY 60TH WEDDING ANNIVERSARY

to a great and fun couple, Dale and Dorthea Appl of Leoti!!!  You're the perfect example of how blessed marriage can be.  We just have to remember that nothing worse having, comes easily.  It requires a great deal of love, faith in one another and a little bit of work along the way.  Celebrating 60 years together is a major accomplishment that most of us will not make.

Congratulations D and D!!!

Construction Underway

Fires have struck buildings in Wichita County over the past couple of weeks.  First, the historical Livestock Sale Barn which was located just to the south of the railroad tracks went up in smoke.  Early this past Sunday morning, a 9 1 1 call came in that one of the Seaboard's hog farms was on fire.  Much was lost in both fires.  On a good note, ground just broke for new Seaboard Hog Farms in Greeley County this week.  If I am not mistaken, they will be located in the northern part of the county.  These new farms bring new much-needed jobs to our area in addition to new revenue.  It is good to see positive growth in our neck of the woods.

Update on the Blaus

It has been a week since I last spoke to you.  I need to explain why.  For one thing, this virus has continued to attack us over and over again.  I spoke with our doctor about this and was told that that is how this particular virus works.  So...we continue to have our Muccinex with Cough Formula and Tylenol on hand.

For the past 2 months, we've spent practically every available second on our 3 bedrooms' renovations.  We are getting much closer to the end.  Thank goodness!  Stan built our new closet last weekend.  He still has to build one for Abigayle.  I did the Tuscan mud treatment on a new wall in Leighlyn's room and got the first coat of paint on it.  I will be mudding and painting her new 5-sided closet in the next couple of days.  Stan still has to take one of her smaller windows out and then close in the wall before I mud and paint it.  Her bedroom will then be DONE!!!

This week, I managed to paint all of Abigayle's bedroom.  Stan put a new door in.  Yet to come is her new closet and a new window then her room will be finished also.

Work has just gotten started in our bedroom.  It won't take long in here.  Stan is closing out our smaller window and has to hang new closet doors and install french doors to the hallway.  After that, I will be finishing everything by painting the room.

You may be wondering why we are closing off windows.  The reason is simple.  It is our little way of living a "greener" lifestyle.  Every year, more and more gas and electricity are being used.  That means that the resources are getting smaller.  It is a well known fact that windows are notorious for letting air in and out of our homes.  Also, solar heat enters into our homes through windows that are on the sunny sides of our homes.  By walling some of them up, we are protecting our homes, furniture, linens, etc from sun exposutre.  When we are finished with our bedroom renovation, each bedroom will still have one large window.  Our summer plans include replacing all of our windows with new more environmentally sound triple paned windows.

When Stan takes out a window, he fills the gap up with new insulation before he covers that with sheetrock.  One result will be a tighter room with fewer drafts.

In the near future, I plan on returning to more frequent writing.

Tribune--Movie--of--the--Weekend

First of all, I owe you a B--I--G apology.  I completely messed you up on last weekend's movie!!!  I THOUGHT that it was THE LORAX 3D.  I WAS TOTALLY WRONG!!!!!!!!  I hope that this caused no problems for you.  In case you were disappointed because you thought you had missed it, here's new opportunities.  This delightful movie will be shown tomorrow, Saturday and Sunday, March 30th, 31st and April 1st.  If those evenings don't work for you, you can watch it on Good Friday and Saturday of Easter Weekend, April 6th and 7th.  It WILL NOT be shown on Easter.  All movies begin at 8:00 CST.  I wrote the movie's synopsis, etc in an earlier post.  I've been told that people are expecting THE LORAX to be the Number 1 movie of the year.  It is great for people of ALL ages.  People have asked me if they need to bring their own 3D glasses.  The answer is NO.  The theatre furnishes those to its customers.  Once the movie is over, please leave the glasses in the lobby on your way out.  These are high quality glasses.  They are not the old style, cardboard with filmy red and white lenses.  Thank goodness!!!  LOL!

Because of the fact that 3D movies cost more money to produce, theatres have to charge more money for the tickets to the customers.  In Tribune's case, that means that each ticket will cost an extra $2.00.  Here is the breakdown:

Adults, 13 and older:  $7.00
Children, 4 through 12:  $6.00
As always, children from birth through 3-years-of age:  F--R--E--E

Regular movie tickets still cost $4-5.00 each.

Concessions are always very fairly priced.

See you at the movies!!!

Rain Update

Woke up this morning and discovered that Mud Routes were posted for Scott and Wichita Counties.  I went out and checked the rain guage.  BIG puddles of water were everywhere.  I found out that over the past 24 hours, we've received 2 inches of rain!  THANK YOU, LORD!!!  Every drop was needed here.  Already the grass, leaves, etc are greening up rapidly.  It is still partly cloudy (or partly sunny) outside.  Maybe more rain is in the forecast.  I don't know.

Last week, we spent some time with a couple of my uncles and an aunt.  When one uncle and aunt were driving to meet us, they went past more than a few wheat fields in Southwestern Kansas that are already burned up.  I hope that those areas received the rain also.

For Sale

Work is continuing in our bedrooms.  Little by little, we are getting it done.  We have a nice closet organizer for a large closet that we are placing up for sale.  It consists of 2 or 3 rods for hanging clothes and shelves for whatever.  I THINK it is 6-8 feet wide and runs from the floor to the ceiling.  I'll ask Stan to measure it.  We are just asking for offers on it.  It should be ready to go sometime this weekend.  If you are interested, please call me at 375.8033.

My Update

Come Friday, I've been out of surgery for four weeks.  I am feeling much better now.  I am also happy to report that I've had no seizures since I was being wheeled into the operating room.  My depression is getting better also.  Stan mentioned that to me just recently also.  Two people just told me that, for the first time in YEARS, my eyes are alive and sparkling again.  I admit that I still have a long way to go but we are seeing improvement now.  It has been a very long time since we could honestly say that.

I return to my neurologist in April.  At that time, more electricity will be turned on to my device.  After that, more great things are in store for me.  It will take me awhile to get to the full 100% electricity level.  My neurologist is quite pleased that I am already up to the 25%.

I just want to thank God and YOU for all of your prayers and support!!!

An Interesting Mattress

As you know, we've been doing some major renovations in our home.  The new fireplace in our living room is now in and BEAUTIFUL!  Work is still going on in all three bedrooms.  Hopefully they will be finished and in top shape before the end of this month.  As you know, I don't do well with things out of kilder.  Since the girls went into seperate bedrooms, we needed new beds for them.  Leighlyn dropped from a queen to a full and Abigayle now has a twin.  Leighlyn chose a beautiful new headboard that is composed of iron and is very tall.  Abigayle chose an adorable cream-colored wooden headboard and foodboard.  Because they bought new beds, they also needed new mattress sets.  They purchased some really nice and thick mattresses.  They were the thickest that I had ever seen.  Both have memory foam on the tops.  The girls just love them!  Stan and I had purchased a new bedroom suite just a little over 2 years ago.  All we wanted now was a new mattress set.  We chose a mattress constructed completely out of memory foam.  It is about 15 inches thick--NOW, that is.

Stan, the girls and I went to Garden City last Friday while the girls were off school for meetings and Stan got off early for a change.  We made the rounds from furniture store to furniture store until we found just what we wanted.  The final stop was where we found everything.  It was quite convenient to find everything in one place.  The store was quite happy to deliver everything to us but we would have to wait a week.  Since we could hardly wait to get them home, we decided to rent a U-Haul trailer.  This worked out great for us since we also needed more building supplies.  I was a bit shocked to discover that we had 3 sets of boxsprings but only 2 mattresses.  When I questioned this, I learned that solid memory foam mattresses come all ROLLED UP in a not-so big box.  I was a bit concerned about this.  I could hardly believe a good mattress could come like this.

By the time that we got home that night, it was quite late and it was sprinkling so we decided to wait until morning to bring everything inside and set it up.  We set the girls new beds up first.  They were thrilled!  After that, we moved into our  room.  We set the boxsprings into place and then Stan carefully cut the box open.  Boy, was I ever disappointed!  This new mattress was MAYBE 3 inches thick!!!  By this time, I had serious doubts in our ability to choose a quality mattress.  Stan told me to give this a chance.  If we were not happy with it, we could always trade it out.  Soon the mattress was freed from its box and laid on our springs.  It was shocking at just how quickly it began to puff up.  Within a matter of just a few minutes, most of the excess organic cotton cover was full of foam.  We laid down on it and it was WONDERFUL!  During the afternoon, the foam expanded even more until all of the covering was full of the memory foam.  Finally, I was convinced that we might know a bit more about mattress selection than I thought.

We've now spent 4 nights on our new beds.  None of us could be any happier with them.  Stan and I are simply shocked at how much better we are sleeping now.  Our old set was great too and we had spent a lot of money on it.  We only decided to replace it because Stan was so impressed with the memory foam series.  We are sleeping so much better and we hardly ever turn over and are fully rested in much less time than ever before.  Let me tell you, if you are in the market for a new mattress/boxspring set or are not pleased with how you or your back are feeling with your current set, you owe it to yourself to check out this new bedding.  I think you'll be quite impressed with it!  Stan and I have had back problems for a long time.  They appear to be resolved now.

What a Mess!!!

About 2 years ago, the girls decided that they wanted to share the same bedroom.  We moved them both into the larger bedroom of the two and decided to make the smaller bedroom into a walk-in closet for Stan and I.  At first, it worked out well for us.  But...that was before people started using it to store junk, etc.  Then it became a hassle.  A couple of months ago, the girls decided that they wanted to have seperate rooms again.  Though that might seem like no big deal, it is for us now.  This affects all three of the involved rooms now.  Here is a run-down of what we've done so far:

1.  Removed two bedroom windows in Leighlyn's room.  Both were notorious for letting in outdoor air and dust.  The larger window will remain where it is.

2.  A new 5-sided wall-in closet was built in Leighlyn's bedroom.  Why?  Because when we decided to have the walk-in in our bedroom, we removed the original closet to give us more room.  Now, we have to remove part of the wall that seperates our bedroom from Leighlyn's old closet so that we can use it.  After that, the former doors will be removed and a wall put in their place in Leighlyn's bedroom.

3.  Leighlyn and Abigayle's clothes were moved to Leighlyn's new closet.

4.  Last weekend, we rook the two closet rails down from the former walk-in.  Junk was discarded.  Our belongings that we wanted to keep were moved to other locations.  Abigayle was so excited that she wanted a bed set up in there so that she could begin sleeping in it.  For now, she is sleeping in a twin bed but we plan on purchasing a daybed for her soon..  We had closed up the bedroom door between her room and the hallway about 2 years ago.  Since then, Stan had built a doorway between that room and our bedroom.  Now, Stan will remove the sheetrock between her room and the hallway and close up the door between our room and her room.  For now, she doesn't mind a bit.

Other things left to do

1.  Sheetrock in Leighlyn's new closet needs to be mudded and wallpaper hung on it.  I also have to do the Tuscan wall treatment over the sheetrock that covers where her old windows once were.

2.  Removal of built-in toy box/window seat

3.  Paint 3 walls a silvery color.  Paint the accent wall a medium shade of purple.

4.  Buy a full bed instead of the queen bed that the girls have been sharing so that Leighlyn will have more space.

5.  Paint Abigayle's bedroom walls a pale blue and pale green.  (She wants to go for an ocean look.)

6.  After the new closet doors are put into place in our bedroom, we are going to paint our room.  My ideas are for blues or lavendars.  Stan is thinking more in line of the blues.  LOL!

7.  Sometime this summer, we plan on removing our old windows and replacing them with better windows.  We have decided to completely take out the smaller window in our room because we never really use it.  I keep a window shade and drapes over it all of the time anyway.  We'll just take out the old window, put sheetrock in its place.  After that, I will have to put the Tuscan treatment over the new sheetrock since that is what we have in the rest of the room.

8.  We still have to build a closet in Abigayle's bedroom.

About the only thing in the 3 bedrooms that will remain the same is the floors.  They are beautiful and we all love them.

If you would like to lend us a couple of hands, bring 'em on over.  We'll put them to work right away!  LOL!!!

Lynn's Recovery

I am happy to say that day-by-day, I am seeing marked improvements in how I feel.  There have been now new seizures since my surgery on February 17th.  That's a record for me!  I do not believe that my surgery is responsible for that yet.  My neurologist put me on a new drug a couple of weeks before the surgery.  I am doing so well now that she plans on taking me off of my old drug little by little starting in April.

The incisions are healed up and look really good now.  Pain is minimal.  I am finally able to work more.  I did credit bureau work last Friday in Scott City and plan on doing Wichita County's work tomorrow.   I've been able to do more housework and laundry also.   I tend to require an afternoon nap every day now.  My doctors believe that it is a result of the heart problem we just discovered and not my epilepsy or the meds required for it.

So life is getting better and better.  Within the next month of two, the effects of surgery will take over and my improvement will become more pronounced.  Thank You, Lord!!!
