Don't Forget...

that today is Halloweeen.  Many people will be out and about doing their tricking and treating.

1.  If your kids are some who will be out there, make sure that they have something that glows in the dark or light colored costumes so that drivers can see them easily.

2.  If you'll be staying home for the evening and want to hand out treats, please leave your front porch light on so that the kids and their parents know that you welcome ghosts, goblins, etc.

Oh, yeah.  Don't forget to come to our new home.  Our house is one block east of Dollar General.  There is a circle drive in our front yard for easy access to our front door.

Have fun and be careful out there!!!

My Birthday

is always on October 29th.  Wonder how that happens?  I am sure that when I was much younger, I probably would have enjoyed it more to have been on 2 or 3 days every year.  But today, I am quite content just having it just once per year.  I am already 51, ya' know.

Some of you might be shocked that I am willing to disclose that information for everyone to know.  To me, it just isn't that big of a deal.  I've been around a lot, seen a lot, laughed a lot, cried a lot but through it all,  I have survived it all.

In the year, 2002, I came VERY close to having an aneurisym kill me.  Thanks to our Great Lord, it was fixed with open heart surgery and a mechanical heart valve.  When you come that close to death, I believe you appreciate each and every day just that much more.

I am not going to sit here and lie to you.  I was not looking forward to October 29th this year.  My evil side of the coin for bi-polar disorder reared it's ugly head...again.  Even after all of these years, it still shocks me just how quickly I can go from being at the top of the world to the bottom of the heap but it definitely happens to many of us on a very routine basis.  I was looking forward to going to a birthday party last Saturday.  Life took over and I didn't make it.  I wasn't able to force myself to walk out of the door.  This time, my depression was able to convince me that I was physically ill.  That happens with this thing sometimes.

On Sunday morning, I decided that I had to shampoo our bedroom carpet.  During the hour that it too to get it done, something mysterious was happening with my family.  At one time or another, this person or that person left the house.  Where were they going?  And why were they going there???  I had no answers.

Stan and the girls invited me out for a chicken strip lunch in Scott City.  Once my shampooing was done, I took a shower, got dressed and headed for the van.  Funny thing though.  About 2 miles out of town, Leighlyn became very physically ill.  She apologized but asked me if we could turn around and go home.  Of course we could.  There was no way I wouldn't be willing to do that.  Once back in town, Stan drove us home the l-o-n-g way.  We ended up coming in from the back side of our house.  Probably because he didn't want me to see anything on the front side of the house.  LOL!

So he parked the vehicle next to the garage.  We all walked in through the utility room door.  Just a few steps in, I could smell something good.  It smelled like turkey.  Hmmm...Where did that come from?  We have Scentsy pots in most of our rooms and we keep them working most of the time.  We have bunches of fragrances but not any that I could remember smelled like turkey...

Once inside the living room, we discovered that we had company and they were bringing in an early Thanksgiving dinner!  YAY!!!  From that point on, more people began filtering in.  The rest of the day was spent eating but most importantly, visiting and laughing with some of the people I love the most in the world.

Yesterday was my actual birthday.  I spent the day at home by myself until the girls and their friends got home from school.  By late morning, my back was in bad pain.  I ended up spending several hours asleep after taking my back medication.  Already this morning, some pain has returned.  Guess that'll teach me to NOT cut down trees by myself...

Anyway, I want to thank all of you who came to my surprise party and who remembered my birthday!!!  You're just the best!!!

Ah...Tranquility

For the past couple of months, I have been letting my very thick hair grow out so that it could eventually be cut into a particular hair style that I've been admiring.  I FINALLY decided that the mess that I'd been sporting on my head was long enough now to get the job done.  What a relief!  For quite sometime, I had been wearing a crocheted hat on my hair so that I looked a bit better than I really was.

Waiting until the last minute in Leoti to get a hair appointment  just does not work which meant I had to leave town in order to get my hair done.  My 51st birthday is tomorrow, Monday.  I hated to wake up, look in the mirror and once again, see the hag whom I had become.  So...I incorporated my sisters to help me find someone in Garden City who takes appointments on Friday evenings.  Wella, Lori found me someone!  Now I want to tell you how HAPPY I am that she told me about these lovely ladies and their shop.

In the Market

Our daughter, Abigayle, is taking guitar lessons.  We bought her a brand new PINK guitar online but it just came with a vinyl bag (full of holes) to carry it in.  We contacted the manufacturer who sent out a bag replacement.  Within 5 minutes of coming out of the package, it, too, had holes in it.  So...this is not a practical choice.  Do you have a case for a non-electric guitar we could buy?

October--Cancer Awareness Month

I just received some information that I want to pass on to each and every one of you--male or female.  Breast cancer can and does happen to both sexes.  And chances are that you, at at least one time or another, has known someone who has waged war against one of the deadliest diseases known to mankind.

In the most radical cases, these cancer victims have had to choose to have one or both of their breasts removed.  Besides the scars that are left behind, many of these victims now deal with the belief that since their breasts are no longer attached to their bodies, they have lost their attractiveness to other people.  Very, very sad what these people go through.

But help is on its way!  Hollywood actress and S Factor founder, Sheila Kelley, has just launched a new campaign "Redefining Sexy: Believe in Your Beauty" through a provocative video featuring true life stories of REAL women.  You can find it on the internet at

www.sfactor.com/

To view a raw and gritty video on this subject that will open your eyes and hearts, go to

www.sheilakelley.com/redefiningsexy2.asp

This information is powerful and is something that I believe can drastically restore the quality of life for the people who have fought and won or who are fighting their current or future war against breast cancer.

Almost but Not Quite Done

As I promised, I went to work yesterday morning cutting down the many elm trees north of our garage and inside our backyard.  I even went to one of our extra lots and shaped up an elm shrub so that he can grow upwards to become a shade tree.  By doing this, it will be much easier to mow around it also.

As I cut down one tree after another, I stacked them out by our driveway.  By this weekend, Stan and I plan on hauling all of them to the junkyard.

I am pleased with the work that I finished yesterday.  Unfortunately, all of the heaving and hoeing caused me to mess my back up again.  Oh, well.  I accomplished what I set out to do.  Stan is now able to check off another of the chores he had left to do.

He lost his father when he was 2-years-old and his mother when he was just 6-years-old.  From then on, he spent his childhood living with his 5 older sisters and their families.  After graduating from high school, he joined the Air Force.  After he had completed his tour of duty, he came back to the place he always called home--Wichita County.

Soon after coming back to Leoti, he met the school teacher who would change his life forever.  Her name was Miss Donna Lou Pepper from Johnson, Kansas. He oftimes said that she was the greatest gift whom God had ever given to him. After an appropriate time of courtship, they were married on November 22nd, 1959.

To their union, came 4 children.
Vera Lynn and her identical twin sister were born on October 29th, 1961.  The twin was stillborn.
Lori Dawn was born on September 28th, 1967
Lona Sue Ellyn was born on June 3rd, 1971.

His daughters went on and introduced the family to the three men who were much more than sons-in-law.  They became his sons.  Lynn married Stanley Blau. Lori married Leif Christensen.  Lona Sue married Rob Carson.

Eventually, his third generation began.  His grandchildren include:
Adam Duane Blau
Lori Christensen
Vicki Christensen
Marlene Christensen
Leif Henry Christensen
Hunter Dane Carson
Lars Patrick Christensen
Leighlyn Nevae Blau
Abigayle Joy Patrice Blau

Through the years, Pat worked at several jobs for other people until he started his own business which included construction, plumbing, trenching and backhoe work.  Pat found out that he had terminal cancer in 1991.  For most of the next 4 years, he continued to work.

From 1991 to April 29th, 1995, his family and many friends supported him as the cancer spread from his lungs to his brain to his bones...

Life has not and never will be the same for those of us who loved him so dearly.  A permanant gap remains in our lives.  We thank God for the man whom he blessed us with.  Not a day goes by that I don't remember my Daddy.

Happy Birthday, Daddy!!!  I wish I could serve up your favorite dinner tonight--fried chicken with all of the fixings.

Blaus' House Update

Some have wondered what we've gotten done on our new house so far.  It can be summed up in just 2 words, A LOT.

All of the flooring has been finished except for in our utility room.  It is not a huge room so it should be done in just one day.  We decided to put it off until a day when it is too cold to be outdoors.

I had had all of the painting done everywhere except for in our utility room.  So far, all of the paint is on the walls that I can reach.  We purchased a front-loading washer/dryer set that is much taller and thicker than most.  Even with a step stool, reaching the top of the wall behind them is next to impossible.  Have no fear though.  Stan has now decided to build a cabinet in that area for storing our Christmas tree.  It'll be nice.

A few weeks ago, we decided that the color I'd painted our living room was just too bland.  I took care of that by painting three of the walls a rich plum.  We love that now.

Over the past couple of weeks, I've done a major transformation on our master bedroom with paint, wallpaper, etc.  Its beautiful now.

Our kitchen cabinets have been refinished and look beautiful.  Someday soon, we will be putting in new countertops there.  Oh, and by the way, remember how much trouble we had with our brand new dishwasher?  The manufacturer instructed the repairman to finally replace ALL interior parts.  All that remains original now is the body, electric cord and hose.  It works wonderfully now.

Stan has taen a few days off the first week of November to take me to see my neurologist and to remove the girls' existing bathtub and shower and to replace them with the great new set we have purchased.  We can hardly wait to have that job completed!  Right now, the girls are having to bathe in our bathroom at the other end of the house.  It'll be much better when they can do that by their own bedrooms.

So what'll be next after those projects?  We will finally be finishing our roughed-in family room.  It'll take us awhile.  Right now, all that is there is the roof, exterior walls and concrete floor.  We will have to add some more electricity, hang sheetrock on the ceiling and walls, lay carpet or tile and hang a new door that will lead to our back porch.  We hope to start work on this during the winter.

Over the weekend, we got considerable work done to the interior of our garage.  We really want to be able to park our vehicles in it instead of our junk and my mom's extra belongings. another couple of days should just about do it.

I FINALLY worked on the front yard yesterday.  It had been needing to be cleaned since before we moved in.  The summer heat was just too much for me to endure outdoors though.  After the cleaning was done, Leighlyn did some decorating with some scarecrows.  They look cute!

I don't know if you've seen our weather forecast for this week or not.  But for the first three days, temps will be great.  Starting Thursday, things change rapidly.  Highs for Thursday will be in the 50s.  By Saturday, we have a chance for snow.  So...starting today, you can find me out north of our garage.  A hedge of unwanted elm trees reach to the top of the garage.  I hate to cut down any kind of tree but if we allow these to continue to grow there, their roots will destroy the concrete floor in our garage.

So anyway, that is our progress in a nutshell.

Update on Mice

A small group of us were visiting last night.  The subject of mice came up.  A lady who lives in the central part of Leoti mentioned that they have a dog who lives outdoors.  Over the past month, her daughter and her have dumped at least 8 or 9 drowned mice that had gotten into their dog's water.  I don't know about you, but this was the first time that I've heard about anything like that happening.  To me, this tells me we have a much larger than normal mouse population in town this Autumn.  Be prepared for them if you are not already prepared.

Over the past several years, I have heard repeatedly that it is vital in late summer and autumn to keep trash, shrubbery, mulch, etc away from your house's exterior.  By having it, you're putting out an open invitation to not only rodents but to bugs also.  During the warmer part of the year, they might be comfortable just living there but when temps cool off, they'll be coming on in to YOUR house to spend the cold days and night...

Interesting Website for Americans; Etc

The upcoming election effects more than just which politicians will be moving out of Washington, D.C. and which ones will be buying their homes that they are vacating.  So much more is involved that will impact not only Americans' lives but the rest of the world also.  It is up to us to have as much information as we can get BEFORE we head out to vote in November.  Here is a website that was recommended to me.  It not only gives us personal finance advice but it also gives us food for thought for the nation and what has happened and what could happen.

Can You Say SSSCCCRRREEAAAMMM???

I've mentioned that rodents, snakes, centipides, etc have been migrating into area towns for awhile now.  Various theories for why this has been happening has been voiced.  Pest exterminators have told me and others that it is because of the lack of water in the country.  I am hoping that since God has been so generous with His precious rain lately, that this migration to town will come to an end soon.  Others speculate that this is a sign that we should be expecting a tough winter.

My story now moves to H--U--G--E spiders!  I'm not talking about a mere little "daddy long-legs".  I wish.  Just before I went to bed last night, I went into the kitchen to prepare Stan's coffee pot for this morning.  I pulled it out of the corner where it is normally set.  But when I did, I saw this large gray area.  It took a few seconds for my eyes to transfer what they were seeing to my brain for immediate orders on how my body needed to react next.

My body's orders???  Yell for Stan to come and look--NOW!   After that--RUN!!!

So Stan and the girls came to see what my latest calamity was.  Funny thing was that each of them jumped too.  No one wanted to stick around to get to know our new tenant.  Fortunately, since the beginning of time, it has been the man of the cave (household) who has been the family protector.  Stan was just thrilled that this was his duty as my husband and as the girls' father.  Ha!  I fetched him one of our flyswatters to which Stan openly laughed.  He wanted to know just what I expected him to do with that.  He said that the spider was the same size--maybe even bigger.

Well, the swatter was just the first of a series of several events that would need to be done to rid our home of this nasty.  Once Stan popped it,it headed to the floor--behind the refrigerator, of course.  Most refrigerators weigh a good amount of weight.  They weigh even more when they come with a built-in water and ice maker.  Since the girls and I had all but strung a yellow CAUTION banner around the kitchen and Stan, none of us were about to return in there to help him pull the refrigerator from the wall.  Sorry.  We just don't do bugs, mice or rats.

Once Stan was able to clear the electrical wire and water tubing, he was able to get to the spider that had done all but make all of us run from our own home screaming for help.  He stomped on it several times before Stan was satisfied that it was dead.  Just to be on the safe side, he took a couple of paper towels, wrapped the spider's body into them before he carried everything to the dumpster--outside.

My duty for today is to call our exterminator and let him know about this.  Ughhh....

Grapes in Kansas

A B--I--G Thank You

A week ago, our family was delighted to receive a GORGEOUS burgundy Bushel Mum from friends of ours who gave them to us as a house warming gift.  It took us a week to decide just where the best place was to plant it.  FINALLY, we decided that the best place for it was out in the front yard next to the front porch.  We wanted everyone to get to enjoy the mums there.  They are just spectacular!

A couple of weeks ago, I transplanted a few yellow mums from our old house into the southwest corner of our front yard.  I also planted some irises and a daylily with them.  The Summer of 2012 had definitely not done them any favors.  Despite the fact that they had very little moisture to speak of, their little buds have actually managed to open and smile in their new home. That 1.50" of beautiful rain from last weekend really helped them.  Thank You, Lord for sending it to us!!!   Hopefully, there will be lots of moisture this autumn and winter to really give them a good start for next spring.

High School Football

Meade travels to Leoti tonight to play the Leoti Indians.  The game begins at 7:00 CST.

Come out, please, and show your support for this team who has given their all this year.  I have sooo very much respect in this team of just barely enough young men to make a legal team.

Next week's game will also be at home.  We will be playing against St. Francis.  The last game for regular season this year will be on Friday, October 26th, when we go to Oberlin.

Go Indians!!!

Still here...

You may have noticed that my blog has not been updated for several days.  During that time, we've had problems with our internet, illness and plus, I've been trying something different in the bedroom.

Oh my!  Maybe I should explain that.  LOL!!!

When we first bought our house in July, we tackled it with gallon after gallon of paint, new flooring, etc.  I quickly chose a shade of blue for our bedroom that I liked on the little paint sample, brought it home and threw it on the walls.  But our bedroom here is much larger than any we have ever had.  One gallon for just one coat of paint was not enough.  One corner of the room was a bit on the skimpy side.  Before the paint was even dry, I knew I didn't like it.  But at the time, we still had much work to do around the house so I felt it to be much more important to get it done than paint our bedroom a different color.

As time went by and dust settled in the house, I decided that I was not satisfied with the taupe that I had painted the living room.  For my standards, there was not enough wall color.  I'm a "red" person.  We had a carmel apple shade in the adjoining dining room and kitchen, Leighlyn had a rose in her room and Abi had candy apple in her bedroom.  Still, I lingered for more red in my life.  I settled on an Autumn Maple that I discovered at our local hardware store.  I painted three of the living room walls with it and LOVED it!  We've had compliments after compliments on it.

I've enjoyed it so much that I decided that I needed to introduce some of it in our master bedroom.  I still needed to buy some more blue paint too.  I chose a royal blue that is considerably darker than our original shade.  "Love it, too!"  I painted three walls in the blue.  Then I painted the fourth wall completely with the Maple.  Since we had, for the most part, finished everything else in the house, I decided that it was time to romanticize the bedroom.  If you know me or have been following my writings, you know that I love, love, LOVE the Victorian style.  Picking up on that influence in my life, I decided to create a picture rail in the bedroom.  I painted the top 18 inches of the blue walls with the maple.  Stan will hang a piece of wood of some kind and design on the line that seperates the maple from the blue.  I still have one corner that I still have to finish painting with the maple.

Now our comforter is a blue, cream and beige.  It is not exactly my choice.  I wanted to hang our cranberry drapes and cream lace panels in the bedroom.  I have done that and they look beautiful.  As for the lack of red in the comforter, I have placed some red cushions on it.  We'll live with it for awhile and see what we think about that look...

So, now, I think you can see why I've been away from our computer for so long.

Burch Family Update

I received word from Kevin's brother, David, late last night about Kaycee, Kevin's stepdaughter.

The c-section went very well.  The doctors delivered a 3 pound 11 ounce baby girl.  On a baby condition scale of 1-10, she was rated an "8" which is great.  Her parents have tentatively named her Pippa Elisse.

Once that operation was completed, Kaycee's neck surgery began.  David remained at the hospital until late last night.  By the time that he had left, her surgery was still ongoing.

Your prayers are still very necessary and wanted.

In yesterday's post, I listed Kevin's mailing address in case you would like to send cards, donations of baby girl clothes and supplies, gift cards or money.

Thank you, everyone!!!

Prayer Request

Many of you remember my cousin, Kevin Burch, who was raised in Wichita County.  His parents are Les and Lyla (Rowton) Burch.  Bessie Burch of Leoti is his grandmother.

Word was just received that his 7-month pregnant stepdaughter was injured in a car accident that left her with a broken neck.  A c-section is now necessary before her neck surgery can take place.  The stepdaughter had not yet done any shopping for her baby girl who was not due for another 2 months.  Prayers are definitely being asked for them.

If you have anything for baby girls or would like to send a check, money order, gift card, etc, you can send them to Kevin's home.  He and his wife will deliver them to their daughter.  If you are sending a check, please write it to Kacee Curnutt, his stepdaughter.
