Happy, Happy Birthday, Lona Sue (Su Su)!!!
Forty years ago tonight, Daddy, Lori and I drove Mama to the hospital in Tribune where she would be delivering a brand new baby the following morning. After she was settled in, the rest of us came back home for the night. Daddy took Lori who was 4 and me who was 10 to our Uncle Buck and Aunt Marge's house early the next morning. We remained there for the rest of the day. My grandparents, Don and Vera (Stinchcomb) Pepper, drove to Tribune from their farm between Syracuse and Johnson to help welcome the new baby in to this world. Back in those days, no one knew whether or not their baby would be blessed with boy or girl plumbing until the baby was born. Daddy managed to get his prayers answered all three times--each baby was born with girl plumbing. LOL!
After Mama's c-section was over and things were going well, Aunt Marge drove Lori and me to the hospital so that we could meet our baby sister. We could hardly wait!!!
Soon after we met her, our grandmother wanted to go to the drugstore downtown. Lori and I went with her. My grandmother was just like me--she had absolutely N-O coordination! Back then, there were two sidewalks that came with two steps on that particular side of Main Street in Tribune. When our grandmother was walking back to the car, she forgot about the second step and went a-flying. End result? She broke a leg! At the time, the Greeley County Hospital was full so Mama ended up with a great roommate for the next several days. They really enjoyed getting to be together!!!
Since then, Lona Sue grew up and married Rob Carson. They now have a very special son, Hunter Dane Carson, who is 17. He'll be 18 on June 24th.
Lona Sue and Hunter live in Garden City where L.S. works in Economic Development for Finney County.

Sherry Lynn Stalter, age 61, died Wednesday, June 1, 2011 at her home in Garden City, Kansas. She was born on September 7, 1949 in Garden City, KS, the daughter of Donald Edward and Helen Louise Johnson Hoyt. A lifetime resident of Garden City, she had been a hairdresser for 34 years.
On July 25, 1968, she married Bobby G. Stalter at Garden City, Kansas. He survives.
Other Survivors Include: One Daughter, Bobbie Lynn (& Todd) Murphy of Hays, Kansas; Her Mother, Helen Louise Hoyt of Garden City, Kansas; One Brother, Jim Edward (& Patty) Hoyt of San Ramon, California; Four Grandchildren, Maddison, Cole, Chance & McKenna Murphy of Hays, Kansas; Sister-In-Law, Susan (& Tom) Barb of Garden City, Kansas; Two Nephews, Mitch Hoyt & Josh Jacka; Two Nieces, Carly Hoyt & Kara Barb;
She was preceded in death by her father and a daughter, Christine Yvonne Stalter.
Funeral Services will be held at 10:30 am on Monday, June 6, 2011 at the Church Of The Brethren in Garden City, KS with Pastors John Elder and David Bell presiding.
Interment will be held in the Valley View Cemetery in Garden City, Kansas.
The family requests memorials be given to the Sherry Stalter Memorial Fund in care of Price & Sons Funeral Home of Garden City.

(November 29, 1929 - May 25, 2011)
Orlin G. Holland, age 81, passed away on Wednesday, May 25, 2011 at the St. Catherine Hospital in Garden City, Kansas. He was born on November 29, 1929 in Hartley, Iowa, the son of Joseph & Ruth Baumeister Holland. A resident of Garden City, Kansas since 1969 moving from Minnesota, he was a retired realtor in Garden City, Kansas.
His memberships include the St. Dominic Catholic Church, ELKS Lodge #1404, and the American Legion all of Garden City, Kansas. He was also a member of the Realtors Association and was a US Army Signal Core Veteran of Korean Confliict.
On May 20, 1961 he married Phyllis Hamilton in Denison, Iowa. She survives.
Other Survivors Include his One Son - Jeff & Pam Holland of Mansfield, Texas, Two Brothers - Arven Holland of Welcome, Minnesota, Jerry Holland of Emmetsburg, Iowa, Two Grandsons - Jeffrey Holland Jr. of Mansfield, Texas and Jason Holland of Mansfield, Texas.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
Memorial Services will be held at 11:00am on Friday, May 27, 2011 at Price & Sons Funeral Home in Garden City, Kansas.
There will be no calling times.
Interment will be held in the Hartley Cemetery in Hartley, Iowa at a later date.

Lately, you may have noticed that it has been kinda hit and miss as to whether or not I have posted anything here. Reason being is that we have had problems with our computer. We think that it is probably on its last leg. Until we are unable to replace it, it may be a bit between the last post and the new post. Please be patient. Power Raking
A great friend of ours came over last night and power raked our front yard. As I've mentioned here before, our yard has really deteriated over the past couple of years. We had thought that it was all due to our grub population. Come to find out, the grubs were just part of the problem. We had a major problem with thatching. Whenever your yard is thatched, moisture cannot get through to the ground below it. The thatch catches the moisture and releases it into the air. Therefore, your grass does not get the water. It dies instead. As for the water that you paid for, it was just wasted. Given the fact that water is not always plentiful and prices may have gone up just like Leoti's, it only makes sense to do whatever is necessary to de-thatch your yard. Many communities have landscaping contractors or businesses where you can rent a power raker. By the time that our friend had completed the power raking and had run his mower with a bag over it to suck up the old grass, we were shocked at what a difference we were already seeing! That is something that REALLY needs to be done! If you do not suck it up with a bagged mower, the old grass will once again make it to the bottom of the grass and you are no better off than you were before the dethatching was done.
We then spread out more grass seed over the entire area and watered it down. Hopefully, all of this work will pay off quickly.

Kansas Storms
Late last night, Leoti was bombarded by LOTS of strong winds again. As far as rain and hail, I think that they all went around us. South of Leoti in Grant County, baseball-sized hail was reported. I also heard that baseball-sized hail made its way to the Manhattan, Kansas area. Chances are that if these reports are true, not much remains of any crops in those areas.
A high wind warning for all of Western Kansas has now been posted. Sustained winds of 25-40 mph with gusts up to and including 55 mph are expected through 9:00 p.m., CDT are expected.
If you happen to be out on country roads and highways, be forewarned that with winds such as these, we need to be especially concerned when passing by large semi-trucks, etc.
Hang on to those hats, steering wheels and moo moos!!!
