Keystone Gallery

Wichita County is very proud of the men and women who live(d) here who went on to become amazing stars of the nation, world. Marion Bonner was one such man. He became a major player in the world of discovering and uncovering fossils. One of his sons is Chuck Bonner. Chuck also grew up in Leoti and has made his own name along his journey. Today, he and his wife, Barbara Shelton, own and operate their Keystone Gallery at 401 US 83 between Scott City and Oakley, Kansas.

We stopped by there this morning, Friday, September 18th. Unfortunately, we did not get to meet Chuck as he was cleaning and readying their chimneys for the upcoming winter. Fortunately, we were able to spend our time with his wife, Barbara Shelton.

Chuck is known for his exploration of the chalk beds in this area in the search for new fossils. He is also a noted artist. His wife, Barbara, is famous for her photograpy. They live right next door to their gallery. Both, their house and gallery, are located in older buildings constructed out of the native limestone that is so popular in Kansas. Their home is surrounded by some of the most beautiful scenery in Kansas.

I urge you to check out their gallery as soon as possible. It is well worth the trip to get to them. You'll find fossils that you may or may not have heard of, beautiful artwork, etc. You'll even get to meet their family dog whom they lovingly rescued from the pound. Yes, chances are she will introduce herself to you when you exit from your vehicle. She is a sweet being and will cause you no harm. They are open from 9:00 to 5:30 unless they are on a dig. It would be a good idea if you called ahead to make sure that they will be open. Their phone number is 620-872-2762.

I also urge you to check out their website at the following address:

www.keystonegallery.com

They are more-than-happy to host school classes, etc who want to learn more about the sea that formerly flowed in this area that we now call home. If you are adventurous, they will guide you on fossil digs! Tell them that Lynn recommended them to you!

Here is their email address:

I am sure that you will be impressed!
