If you enjoy art, you need to go to the Wichita County Courthouse or Western State and Security State Banks in Leoti. For awhile, the work of R.B.S.E.S' first through sixth grade students will be spotlighted.
Mrs. Paul (Martha) Meyers is their instructor. She has been teaching art in Leoti for a couple of years now. Before this year, an official art classroom was available. However, that has changed now since the sixth grade students have been transferred from the junior high to the grade school. Now, no empty classrooms were available. So, Mrs. Meyers is now pushing her art cart from classroom to classroom. That's dedication!!! Mrs. Meyers is not employed by the Wichita County School System. She was hired by the Wichita County Arts Council.
In the past few years, the government has been trying to cut costs by deleting "unnecessary" programs from public education. Those courses of study usually consist of arts, music and band. We are so very fortunate to have the outstanding vocal and instrumental departments under the direction of Mrs. Jayme Bishop, Mrs. Torrie Graff and Mr. Alan Brockmeier. These three great instructors continue to turn out highly skilled musicians! These teachers are employees of the school system.
When the Arts Council learned that Wichita Countians were in danger of losing their art program, they stepped forward and offered to provide the money necessary to allow art to continue here. Not all school districts are that fortunate.
Personally, I am very happy that our children continue to learn and explore their individual strengths in art, music and band. Not everyone excells in bookwork. Not everyone excells in sports. Artwork presents a different venue for everyone to attain success.
If you wish to make a donation to the Arts Council, please contact Janelle Downs. I am also sure that if you do not live in Wichita County and your school district is looking at the possibility of shutting down the arts, Janelle would be happy to give you advice at doing what they so graciously have done for us.
