More than a year ago, people from Garden City rented the little building next to the Post office. It was the former building where the Marcy Shoe Shop was housed for many years. It was then converted into a grocery store that primarily sold Mexican groceries and some household items. Eventually, the people from GC decided that they were tired of driving back and forth to Leoti every single day so they sold the business to Moses Ugalde who had lived in Leoti for much of his life.
Shortly after he made his purchase, he moved to the new location which was formerly where the Hallmark Store (Sunshine House and Beary Interesting) were located. It is straight across the street from Security State Bank. This building provided MUCH more space to be used any way that he wanted.
Moses brought in several new refrigerators that he uses to stock such things as cheeses that are normally only found in Mexico, fresh tortillas, chorizo, a favorite from years ago--headcheese which is made from pork, empty shells for gorditas which are basically thicker tortillas that have taco meat and cheese or whatever you want to put in them.
Another refrigerator holds Coke that comes from Mexico. Many people prefer it's flavor to the U.S. version. There is also juice, Red Bull and other soft drinks.
A freezer contains one of the products that I thoroughly enjoy--popcycles. These are not the run-of-the-mill popcycles. These are WONDERFUL! They consist of real fruit juice with real pieces of fruit in them. It seems that whenever I talk to other customers of Moses that they are favorites of their's also!
On the shelves, you will find fresh fruits and vegetables that do not require refrigeration, canned goods, Mexican cleaning supplies, clothes, bags of chili peppers, etc.
Moses and I were discussing this popular new business in town. Though there is a considerable amount of non-Hispanic people who shop in his store, he finds that many caucasion (white) people do not think that they are welcome there. Moses wants everyone to know that EVERYONE is welcome there--you, too!
During the past few months, Moses has enjoyed watching people purchase his popcycles and soft drinks and move outdoors where they sit on the City's benches to enjoy their recent buys and watch the world go 'round.
So, sometime when you have extra time, drop by Moses' and take a look at all that he has to offer. At this time, he is finding vendors to purchase other items from to stock his store with. The store is open seven days a week.
