Anit-Bullying Meeting

As I was growing up (and sometimes as an adult), I have been the center of bullying.  Many of us have been bullied at one time or another.  Wichita County is fighting back for the bullied children.  An anti-bullying meeting will be held in the east computer lab at the WCJ/SHS on Monday, March 25th, at 7:00 p.m.  The public including kids are encouraged to attend.  Please come out and see what it takes to rid our community of bullying  We can do it in a very peaceful way!  Our children will appreciate it!!!

Our Gratitude

Today has been a blur for the Blaus.  The morning started out fine.  Today was the farm congignment sale here.  At approximately 10:00, Stan, Abigayle and I headed to the community building with our pie, case of pop and bag of potato chips for the hungry public.  We had just pulled out of our front driveway, when Leighlyn called me.  I assumed that she was calling to see if we were on our way.  We were to meet her at the sale.  As soon as I answered, Leighlyn told me not to worry because she was okay.  I immediately felt a slight increase in my blood pressure.  LOL!  When someone begins a conversation like that, you know something is very wrong.  She went on to tell me that she had been in a car wreck.  OH, MY GOODNESS!!!  I was suddenly wide awake and horrified as soon as I learned that the wreck was not in the city limits of Leoti.  (Leighlyn has always been told that whenever she was riding around with friends, anything past the city limits, were off limits.)

Come to find out the driver of the S U V had taken them to the frontage road between the City shop and the Seaboard mill.  Major snowdrifts, patches of ice and mud were the name of the game there.  At some point in their journey, the vehicle flew up in the air.  Originally, it was heading to the east but after it leaped into the air, it landed facing to the west before it rolled over.

Once it came to a stop, the driver's side of the vehicle was lying on the ground.  The passenger doors were impossible to get open.  The girls were terrified.  They didn't know how they could get out  One of the girls realized that the only thing they could do was escape through the sun roof.  Two were able to get out but Leighlyn was hanging from her seatbelt.  She finally decided to kick her feet against the steering wheel over and over.  This eventually broke the seatbelt and she was free to go through the sun roof also.

Our Heavenly Father protected these three precious children for us.  Thank You, Lord!!!!!!!  All three of these girls are okay physically but very shaken.

The police who responded explained to us that their seatbelts saved their young lives.

I want to thank our family and friends for standing up and supporting us through this traumatic point in our lives.  We couldn't have done it without you!!!

Tonight is going to be a tough one.  Right now, I just feel like I am going through the motions.  Tonight is when it is going to actually hit me...

Just a Reminder About Medications...

Most of us already know this.  On a social network this morning, a person mentioned having a certain health issue.  One of her friends recomended that she take one kind of prescription drug with another drug.  PLEASE DON'T DO THIS unless you have consulted with your medical doctor or pharmacist FIRST.  Some mixtures of drugs can not only be nasty but they can also KILL the patient taking them!  There is a reason why doctors and pharmacists go to school so long.

Parents of Wichita County Junior and Senior High Students

who attend GAP, a Christian youth program, should be very proud of their children!  Yesterday was Donna Lou Elder, Leif and Lori Christensen and Stan and my turn to feed these hungry young men and women.  My mom, Lori and I spent the day from 10:00 to 8:00 last night at Christ Covenant Church where we prepared and cooked enough homemade egg noodles in a rich chicken broth flavored with finely chopped carrots and celery for 70 people, 20 pounds of mashed potatoes and 5 sheets of rice krispie treats.  By serving time, we were starting to feel our ages and wanting to know if we bit off a bite too large to chew and swallow.  LOL!  But thanks to all of the thank you's and gratitude that these members of GAP and their parents and leaders gave, we'd do it again today, if necessary.   Leoti has some good kids being raised here.

Thank you to all of the parents out there who have taken your extra time to teach your children manners and other social graces!

Prayer Request

I received word yesterday that a high school aged boy in the Colcord, Oklahoma area had found out in December that only 5% of his heart was still working.  If a new heart was not found soon, things would not be good for him.  People affiliated with the New Life Ranch in Oklahoma, had raised some money for his family as they wait in a Little Rock hospital where his medical care is being given. (New Life Ranch is a Christian ranch where many of Wichita County youth spend part of their summers.)   He shared with the people who brought the money that he was trying to have faith and, at the same time, he felt badly for the people who would someday have to say good-bye to whomever would be losing his/her life so that he could have the heart.  I totally understand how he feels.  At that time, he and his family were hoping for a heart in 6 to 12 months.  Praise the Lord!  A heart became available to him yesterday.  He has undergone the surgery.  Everything went well and he is now recovering.  It is going to be a long road ahead of him.

I ask that everyone remember him and his family and friends as their journey has just begun.  Please pray that his body never rejects the new heart.

And as his new life now begins, someone else's life has ended.  Please pray for that person and the loved ones left behind.  Their pain will never cease.  Hopefully over time, it will lessen.

Our Heavenly Father has worked through the brains and hands of many a doctor to be able to put His miracles into action.  Praise be to Him!!!

I thank you for your ongoing prayers and thoughts in these matters.

10 Year Losing Pattern Comes to an Exciting End

The last time that the Leoti Indians charted a win against the Tribune Jackrabbits was in 2003--until January 22nd, 2013.  That is when Coach Nate Schmidt led the fighting Indians to a 60-59 win in a most exciting game that was played in Tribune.  Leotians all over town have been all a-buzz with this news today.  Our boys played an outstanding game that they will not forget anytime too soon.  One person who attended last night's game told me that she was concerned about whiplash.  LOL!  She said that the final portion of the game was a quick race from one basketball goal to the next.  Others say it was absolutely one of the best games they ever had had the opportunity to watch.

At this time, I have yet to hear how our girls did lasr night.  As soon as I know, I will post it here.

Our next game wil be this Friday night when we play against Atwood in Atwood.  Varsity girls will play at 6:30.  The boys' game begins at 8:00.  Our next game at home will be on Tuesday, January 29th, when Syracuse comes here.  Don't forget that Winter Sports Homecoming will be on Friday, February 1st.

HE IS FOUND!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

PRAISE BE TO THE LORD!!!!!!!!  As I told you about 3 days ago, Thorny, the beloved dog of my sister and her family, had left the nest.  Many people joined us over the past couple of days to locate him and bring him home.  I prayed over and over for God to take care of him and to guide us.  Everytime I drove around horse stables on the southeast side of Leoti, I had this burning feeling.  I don't know how many times we circled that area.  Still nothing.  No sign of him there or anywhere else for those MANY hours.  Finally, Kevin Larson, called Lori and Lars about 2 hours ago to report that he had seen him in a wheat field which was just across the street from those stables.  Three vehicles were at that location within a matter of 3 or 4 minutes.  Thorn ran from everyone.  People were beating down the wheat stubble on foot while others made pass after pass to watch for him.

Within minutes, the frightened pooch tore across Highway25.  People held their breath for fear that he would be run over.  Thanks to the Good Lord, he made it just fine.  Still, the chase continues on the other side of the highway! Lori and Lars continued to call his name but he still refused to halt.  Finally, it dawned on my mother to sing "Happy Birthday to Thorn"       Hmmmm......  Now you are wanting to know where that came from, aren't you?  Well, years ago, Lori discovered that Thorn was a musical little guy whenever someone sang "Happy Birthday".  Amazingly, as soon as he heard the lyrics, he froze in place before turning to see who had been chasing him far and wide.  As soon as he recognized them, he ran into their waiting arms.

The time away from home has not been time he had been eating or drinking.  Thorn has lost some weight.  Lori ran right to the store and purchased him his very favorite cuisine!  LOL!!!

So, anyway, I want to thank each and every one of you who have helped us locate this little member of our family.  Without you, I don't know how much longer he would have been living in "the wild" of Leoti.  Those prayers you were sending for his safe return have been answered.

THANK YOU, KEVIN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Welcome home, Thorny!  We've missed you lots and LOTS!!!!!

Bi-Polar Disorder

For quite some time, I have longed to write about BPD.  As you know, I suffer with it as do MANY other people in every location of the world.  Recently, it seems that everywhere I look from soap operas to books to daytime and nighttime tv to national and state news, it is there socking me in the face.  In many cases, I find the information being reported to be sincere.  In other places such as soap operas and movies, I find that the truth gets a bit twisted up.  Writers and producers may change things a bit to bring in more people to watch the storyline.

This can be very dangerous.  Some people may believe that since they act much like a portrayel, they are definitely suffering with BPD.  Others may not see themselves with certain symptoms so they think they are "normal".  As with many diseases, disorders and illnesses, only doctors can make the accurate diagnosis.  Another thing that has been bothering me is the reputation that some of these sources have given to the victims.  Therefore, I feel it is time for me to step forward and give you MY impressions on this matter.  Don't take what I about to write as the absolute all for BPD.  Believe me, much research on this disorder has been done throughout recent years.  It is out there and available to anyone seeking more information.  Many updates have also come about.  Things that people once believed about what was originally known as Manic-Depressive Disorder have been discarded.  Other things have been added to the mix.  Most importantly is that many more drugs and therapies are available to us than at any other time in history.

Everyone experiences varied moods throughout their lives.  In a bi-polar victim, the mood swings can be very severe with means extreme or frequent.  They can be:

1.  Manic--extreme highs

2.  Depressive--extreme lows

3.  Mixture of the two

No lab tests can determine this disorder.

BPD tends to run in families but not everyone in that family is necessarily a victim.  Some researchers say that the symptoms skip a generation before the disorder rears its ugly head again.  I don't put much belief in that.  I've seen grandparents, parents and children all display the same tendencies.  In my personal case, I was diagnosed with borderline manic depression as it was then called in 1988. Because it was borderline, no medicine was prescribed.  By 1994, it was full-blown manic depression.  Since then, the name was changed because it was more "politically correct".  Three months after I was told my condition was full-blown, my grandmother was also diagnosed with it.

BPD victims don't "deserve" this.  They didn't go out and do or take something, breathe bad air, etc that caused this disease to develop.  They didn't just "catch it" somewhere like the common cold.  Instead it is believed that this is a result of a chemical imbalance in the brain.  The good news is that it can be corrected with medication.  Something that many people do not realize is that the condition is lifelong.  To begin with, people around the victim are misunderstood by the people around them.  In grade school, many of my classmates refered to me as being "weird".  Oh, my gosh!  I cannot begin to tell you how hurtful that word really is!!!  I don't allow it to be spoken in our home.  I don't want anyone else to feel the pain that it caused for me.  I hope that my children have learned enough about this from my personal experience, that they will not go out and hurt someone else by saying it.

Mania or manic refers to extreme highs in a person's moods.  Here are common symptons that the mania brings on to the victims.  Not every person will suffer with each of these.

1.  He/She feels super great or super human.

2.  We are practically invincible or indestuctable.

3.  Everyone just LOVES us!

4.  Way too much energy.

5.  Needs very little sleep.

6.  Some experience hyper sexuality and may go from one partner to the next.

7.  Extremely talkative.

Depression Symptoms

These are the lows of the disease.  Again, not every bi-polar disorder victim has to have each of these.  In many BPD cases, the depression is what victims notice the most in their day-to-day lives.  To be considered an actice depression, the victim will experience depression every day for at least two weeks.

1.  Sad feelings or feelings of being inadequate, non-worthwhile, empty inside

2.  Things that normally cause pleasure and happiness for us, lost their appeal.

3.  Major weight gain or weight loss

4.  Too much sleep or cannot get enough sleep

5.  Thoughts are slow

6.  The body's movements are slow and/or sluggish.

7.  Worthlessness

8.  Unwarranted guilt

9.  Poor concentration

10.  Poor decision making skills

11.  Serious consideration of suicide and death

12.  No one appears to like or care for us

Wow!  Isn't Bi-Polar Disorder just grand???  This is what a large amount of us live with each and every day.  Our lives are dreadful if we are not taking the correct medications for it.  Don't get the idea that taking a pill or two a day will "cure" you.  It won't.  It will help tremendously to smooth out the rough spots but it won't stabilize everything.  Sometimes, doctors need to increase, decrease or completely change our medications so it is important to update your doctor on how you are feeling.  Something that I cringe to hear is that a BPD patient went off of his/her medication because he/she was no longer feeling the symptoms.  Oh, boy.  The reason that the symptoms were minimized was because of the medicine.  Duh.

So if you are a friend or relative of a person with BPD, reach out and offer the support that he/she needs to get over the humps and out of the trenches.  Your non-stopping alliance is a MAJOR influence on that person.  I can't tell you how many "friends" I have had through the years who have dumped me during my extreme high or low moments and came back to me when I was steady again.

I hope that what I just wrote has helped to "educate" you on BPD. For tons of information on this desease, it can be found on the internet, in books and at your clinics and hospitals also.  If you think you may have it, go to your doctor or mental health clinic.  Non-lab testing can be done.  Once positively diagnosed, medicine will be diagnosed to put you on track for a much happier life.  Your symptoms won't go away overnight.  It is a lengthy process but well worth the journey.

Tribune's Star Theatre's Upcoming Schedule

I just got the list of movies that will be playing for the next several weeks.  Enjoy!

January 18th, 19th and 20th:  LINCOLN

January 25th, 26th and 27th:  LINCOLN

February 1st, 2nd and 3rd:  LES MISERABLES
Drama/Musical/Romance  PG-13  Released 12/25/2012  Russell Crowe, Hugh Jackman, Anna Hathaway

February 8th, 9th and 10th:  GUILT TRIP
Comedy PG-13  Released 12/19/2012  Barbra Streisand, Seth Rogen, Julene Renee

February 15th, 16th and 17th:  JACK REACHER
Thriller Tom Cruise, Alexia Fast

I think that all of these movies are non 3D which means the following admission charges will apply:

Adults, 13 and older:  $5.00
Children, 4 through 12:  $4.00
Babies through 3-years-of-age:  F-R-E-E

Refreshments are also fairly priced.

Folks, I urge you to compare admission and refreshment charges at your area theatres.  I think you may be shocked at the differences between those and Tribune's Star Theatre.  In many cases, Tribune is drastically less expensive.  In most theatres, the people working behind the counters are employees.  In Tribune, the people working are volunteers.  Believe me, it makes a big difference.

Food for Thought

As we said good-bye to a lovely lady yesterday, the officiating minister said many things that really touched my heart.  One of them is what I am about to tell you here.  There is total truth to it and it is something that we need to recognize and make changes to turn it around to what God wants for us and for our world.

"Today, people of the United States are much more tuned in to being 'politically correct' instead of choosing to believe in and support individual character of each of us."

Tribune--Movie-of-the-Weekend

This is one of the movies that I have looked forward to tremendously.  I am not alone.  Out of the many people whom have seen it, 12 Oscar nominations have been set.

LINCOLN

This Biography/Drama/History is rated PG-13.  Just released on November 16th, 2012, this movie runs for 150 minutes.  Showtime is 8:00 CST on Friday, Saturday and Sunday, January 18th, 19th and 20th.  Stars include Daniel Day-Lewis, Sally Field, David Strathairn, etc.

What many of us do not realize is that Abraham Lincoln, one of the best American presidents ever, was all of the strife that he was dealing with during the Civil War.  Struggling with the horrid deaths of so many people on both sides of the issue of slavery, he was also trying to handle the fact that there were people out of his own cabinet who had turned away from him as they believed that his convictions to end slavery were wrong.

Adults, 13 and older:  $5.00
Children: 4 through 12:  $4.00
Babies through 3-years-of-age:  F--R--E--E

Refreshments are also very fairly priced.

A Gentle Plea

Viruses and Influenza are now reported to be at epidemic proportion across the state of Kansas, etc.  PLEASE do your part and stay HOME whenever possible if you are sick.  No one else wants this junk.  If you must be out and about, purchase some face masks and wear them when you are out of your house.  If you are fine and are going out to shop, it might not be a bad idea to take along some anti-bacterial cleansing wipes to use on shopping cart handles.  This stuff is easy to pass on to others.

One of the main places that keep these illnesses passed on is at school.  If your child has had a fever, keep him/her home until the temperature has been normal for at least 24 hours.  Right now, people are complaining of respiratory and/or intestinal bugs.

I recommend that once you are feeling better that you wash your bedding, towels, washclothes, etc that you have been using during your illness, in hot water.  Our dryer has a sterilizing cycle.  I am using it  A LOT right now.  We are also using our sterilizing cycle in our dishwasher.  Of course, be smart about the laundry.  Use the hottest water and temperatures only on laundry that can handle it.  Heat and hot water can shrink many fabrics.

Major Improvements

If any of you have driven on Broadway Street in Leoti during the past few days, you probably noticed that Bruce and Rhonda Endorf, owners of Hi-Plains Motel, have begun an amazing remodel of their office.  This motel which was built in the late 1950s has undergone a MAJOR remodel over the past few years.  Each room has been redone with new paint, wallpaper, carpet, tile, furniture, etc.  The passersby have noticed the facelift that included new paint awhile ago.  During the summer, new concrete was laid in the parking lot and in front of the office which is located on the lower level.  But now the Endorfs wanted to do something to their office that they have desired for a long time.  They took the original glass and door out of the office's front.  The front was extended toward the street just a bit.  New bronze-colored glass and double doors were then put into place.  This in itself was a major change but that is not where the remodel will end.  Much is planned for the office's interior also.  I am not going to tell you what all is in store for that.  Instead, I would just invite you to go on in and see it for yourself.  When all is finished, I am sure we will all be amazed!  (I already am!)

During the past few years, Bruce and Rhonda purchased 2 old businesses to the south of the post office.  They did major facelifts to each building and then went inside and transformed the buildings that are now being leased by a veterinarian and Seaboard Foods.

My family and I are very proud of and thanful for the Endorfs who have gone above and beyond to make Leoti a much nicer place to live.  In order to attract new citizens to our community and to entice the people whom already live here, it is imperative that our businesses and our homes be updated and cleaned up.  I am not saying that people should go into debt to do this.  Just use whatever you have to make your place more attractive to the people around you.

Thank you, Bruce and Rhonda, for all that you have done for Wichita Countians, etc ever since the early 1980s when you moved to Leoti!  It is MUCH appreciated!!!

To make reservations for motel rooms, please call 620.375.2239.  If you have family and friends whom plan to be here for the Wichita County Fair, it is not too early to get those reservations made.  The entire motel is usually fully booked quite awhile before the fair begins.  While many motels offer continental breakfasts to their guests, Hi Plains gives their guests delicious breakfast that the guests choose from their menus.  And when I say "give", that is exactly what I mean.  The breakfast is included in the motel booking.  Guests pay no extra for their meal.  How can anyone beat that???
