Rattlesnake at School

Great news!  I received a phone call from a very reputable person last night.  Students had mistaken the identity of the snake.  It was actually a bullsnake.  They are great snakes.  One of their activities is to kill rattlesnakes.  I apologize for any problems that this may have caused anyone.

Snakes Amongst Us

Just wanting to caution everyone.  After school yesterday, the Wichita County Junior High track team met just to the west of the high school to practice.  While there, kids found a RATTLE SNAKE on the grounds.  With nothing to kill the snake, it was taken to a nearby field and released.  (I am sure that the young man's parents squirmed as soon as they knew he had done this.  LOL!)

The school is located in a residential area.  Again, this is proof that poisonous snakes aren't just out and about in rural areas.  We all need to be aware of the fact that they live in towns and cities also.  Just a couple of months ago, a man stepped out onto his front porch in Ulysses and discovered a rattle snake curled up there warming itself in the sun.

Be prepared.

My Update

Stan took me to Hays yesterday for my appointment with my neurologist.  She was pleased with my recovery so much that she has taken me off of one of my morning medications.  YAY!!!  The road to a less drowsy life has begun! I admit that just the thought of extra electricity being added on, scares me.  The first time, I definitely felt the power turn on.  This time since I was used to the feeling, I barely felt it at all.   Because I am handling the electricity so well, she added on a much larger dosage of it.  In addition to the extra height of power, it is now lasting longer.  It forces electricity into my brain for 7 straight seconds then it takes a 5 second break followed by the 7 second force, etc. It will take almost a full year before I am at the highest power.  Already, my seizures have dropped from being full fledged as they used to be to just a twinge in my eyes that lasts for 2 or 3 seconds.  I no longer forget where I am, who I am, etc.  PRAISE THE LORD!!!!!  Those are very scary events to endure.  Since everything is going so well, I do not return to my neurologist until July.  At that time, higher dosages of electricity will be added and additional medicine will be dropped.    My doctor expressed to us that I am doing "fabulously well".  Can't beat that!

Thanks to all you who have been praying and continue to pray for my recovery!!!

Time is Ticking...

In recent years, Wichita County School students have enjoyed gathering Box Tops for Education.  They give them to the office at their school and then they are eventually traded in for cash that our schools always need and appreciate.  This year, Mr. Keith Higgins, Superintendant of USD 467, has pledged that if the students meet their goal of 9,000 Box Tops, he will take a pie in his face.  (Hopefully it is the kind he likes because the students are getting VERY CLOSE to acheiving their goal!)

Cut off day for the 2011-2012 school year is May 4th.  If you have some that you want to give, please take them to the Wichita County Elementary School office or send them with a student.  Box Tops can be found on the boxes and envelopes of many grocery items we use every day.  Please make sure that the expiration date has not expired.

After the deadline, continue to save these please for next year.  We keep an envelope under a magnet on our refrigerator for storing them.

Thank you!!!

WCJHS Spring Program

was last night.  Mr. Allen Brockmeier assembled his choir and band to peform a great evening of music for the audience.  They performed very well..  Personally, I think both groups are peforming more at a high school level versus junior high.  A couple of junior high girls accompanied a couple of the songs via piano.  They did an extraordinary job.

The elementary and high schools will be in performance next week.  I posted their schedule earlier this week.

Words to Live By

I received this email today and liked it so much that I wanted to share it with you!

1.  Give people more than they expect and do it cheerfully.

2.  Marry a man/woman you love to talk to.  As you get older, it is their conversational skills you'll appreciate the most.

3.  Its important NOT to believe everything, spend everything you have or to sleep as much as you want to.

4.  Don't tell anyone you love them unless you absolutely do.

5.  Look the person in the eye when saying "I'm sorry".

6.  Be engaged for at least 6 months before you marry.  (That's what the email says.  In our case, we dated for about 2 weeks when Stan asked me to marry him and I said "YES!".  We were engaged on February 2nd and married on May 2nd.  That was just 3 months!  To this day, our marriage is great and just keeps getting better and more secure day after day.  We are each other's very best friend.)

7.  Believe in love at first sight.  (It worked for me!)

8.  Never laugh at someone else's dream.  Without dreams, some people have nothing else.

9.  Love deeply and passionately.  You might get hurt but that is the only way to live completely.

10.  Fight fairly when having a disagreement.  Don't do any name-calling.

11.  Don't judge people by their relatives.

12.  Think quickly but talk s-l-o-w-l-y.

13.  When someone asks you a question that you don't want to answer, ask them why they want to know.  Smile while you're asking it.

14.  You cannot have great love and great achievement without great risk.

15.  Say Bless you" when you hear someone sneeze.

16.  When you lose, don't lose the lesson too.

17.  Remember the 3 Rs:

       Respect for self
       Respect for others
Responsibility for ALL of your actions

18.  Don't let a little dispute damage a great relationship.

19.  As soon as you know you've made a mistake, fix it IMMEDIATELY.

20.  Smile when answering the phone.  The caller will hear it in your voice.

21.  Spend some time alone with yourself each and every day.  You'll thank yourself for it.

My Update

Several of you have been asking about me.  Just thought that I'd get you updated.

As of last Wednesday, 2 months have passed since my VNS surgery for my epilepsy.  As time has gone, my recovery has been great.  I'm not where I need to be yet but I am sure that I will be there within the next few months.

One of the things that didn't drive me as crazy as I thought that it would is the numbness in my left to central neck.  I still have some numbness but some of my feeling is back in most places.  Nothing is totally numb anymore.  Some of my shirts that have collars still drive me bonkers when they touch my neck.  I have no problems with t-shirts anymore.  Not all patients get their sensations in their necks back.  Anytime that you're dealing with nerves, you're taking a risk of that.

Once in a great while, I feel a jolt of electricity being sent to my vagus nerve.  It is not a painful feeling.  It is very quick and does nothing more than feel like a tickle or itch.  Needless to say, it is very easy to live with.  I've only had to use my magnet against my device 2 times.  Each time was not pleasurable but it was not painful either.  It is not easy to describe other than it takes your breath away and you feel the shock throughout most of your chest.  It, too, does not last long.

I am having some short pains in my chest at about mid point in my chest.  I have already dicussed it with my cardiologist.  He does not think that it has anything to do with my heart.  He believes that there is probably some residual healing inflammation around the device.  We should know for sure next week when I meet with my neurologist.  You may remember that I was to see her this past Thursday.  I postponed that when we discovered that we had an after school meeting for our daughter, Leighlyn.  She will be in driver's education this summer.  The meeting was to go over everything.  So now, we will be seeing the doctor on Thursday.  At that time, the electricity power will be turned up even higher.  Sounds kinda scary, doesn't it?  When we had the last appointment, I was able to handle 25% of the total electricity that I'll have to have.  That was a large amount for most VNS patients.  I'm proud of that.  It'll be interesting to see how much power I can handle this time.  My goal is at least 50%.  That goal might be too much to expect though.  I'll let you know.

My seizure activity appears to be practically non-existant now.  Not all of that progress is because of the VNS.  Before my surgery, my neurologist placed me on a new anti-seizure drug named Vimpat.  I am sure that it has a lot to do with my decrease.  Vimpat has NO side effects such as drowsiness, etc.  If you know of someone with epilepsy, you might suggest this new drug to them.  I am still on Trileptal, another anti-seizure drug.  It causes great sleepiness in me.  The doctor has already told me that once the Vimpat is up to a good level and the VNS is working well, she will begin to wean me off of the Trileptal.  I can hardly wait!  Don't get me wrong about Trileptal!!!  It is the BEST anti-seizure drug I was ever on.  It gave me much better control over my seizures than I had ever had before.  I still recommend it to people.  My epilepsy had just gotten worse over time.

You may be wondering about my depression.  Well sadly, it is still here...BUT it has lessened considerably!  It is better than it has been in a very long time.  I am laughing much more often.  I am able to stay on a conversational topic much better.  I have returned to more cooking and housework than I've been able to do for a long time.  Stan and the girls are having to help less.  They appreciate that!  LOL!!!  I wish I could tell you that I am back to being a spic and span housekeeper but that would be a lie.  I truly believe that I will be soon though.

My biggest problem with that is how exhausted I am.  I get up between 6 and 6:30 on weekdays.  I get everything started involving getting the girls ready for school, starting housework and laundry.  I do really well until about 11:00 when I sit down to eat lunch and watch my ever-important YOUNG AND THE RESTLESS.  But by that time, I've taken my morning dosage of both epileptic medicines.  During my soap opera, the drowsiness begins to slip back in.  Usually by noon or shortly after, I'm asleep again.  My nap lasts for an hour to 2 hours.  By the time I wake up, it is almost too late to get everything that I started in the morning finished before it is time for the girls to come home and time to prepare dinner.  Besides, just because I'm awake does not mean that the sleepiness is gone because it is not.  It still lingers.  I'm just able to navigate easier.  Three nights this week, I was in bed and asleep before 8:00.  I know that it is because of the strong medication that I am on.  To say that I am aggravated is putting it mildly.  I have to take both medicines 12 hours apart.  That is what is responsible for my never ending drowsiness.

A few years ago, Stan had been sick.  When he went to take his prescription medicine, he accidentally took my Trileptal one time.  He still comments on how it totally wiped him out for the next 2 or 3 days.  He was unable to drive, etc.  That's what one little pill does.  Try taking 5 of them every 24 hours.  THEN you'll understand what it is like for me day in and day out.

So, the bottom line is that I am doing MUCH better.  The depression should be completely gone in the next 4 months.  I still have a BIG problem being in public.  I become nervous when I am.  The possibility of having a seizure in a group of people who have not been through one with me is very traumatic for me.  My seizures are embarrassing to me and my family.  Some of my friends have returned to my life.  Some still want nothing to do with me.

I just want to thank all of you who have been concerned and are praying for me.  Your visits, calls, email, etc have meant sooooo very much to me!!!

Old City Park

For the past year or so, much has been done to restore the beauty and interest in our city park.  This is also known as the Boy Scout Park.  (The park by the swimming pool is actually our county park.)  After clean-up was done, the school board gave the park some of the playground equipment from the RBSES playground.  It was erected several months ago and the kids of Leoti really enjoy playing on it!  New and permanent barbeque grills, picnic tables, etc were put into place so that entire families can come and enjoy themselves.  If you are interested in throwing horeshoes, a pad is set up for you at the park.  (Come to the City Hall Office and they'll give you the necessary equipment.)  The concrete walking path has become popular now also.

One thing that has been missing from the park for quite sometime is the beauty of flowers.  Thanks to those of you who donated your bulbs, etc last year, flowers are on their way up!  A 3-tiered flower garden has been planted in the eastern part of the grounds.  Tulips, irises, etc have been planted and will soon be adding a vast array of color and interest to the park.  If you would like to donate more plants, bulbs, etc, please call City Hall at 620.375.2341 or call Lori at 620.375.8027.

The weather this weekend is expected to be very spring-like.  Come on out and take a look around at our newly revitalized park!

Fun Birthday Parties

Our sweet Abigayle's first double digit birthday was Tueday, April 17th.  Boy!  Time has really flown!  We celebrated with a few parties.

First of all, several of her best friends came over last Friday night for a slumber party.  It was so much fun for all of us!  They enjoyed lots of homemade egg noodles, etc for dinner.  For some, it was their first.  With both parents being so busy these days, fewer have the time for such foods.  I cheat.  I use my bread machine to do the mixing and the kneading.  LOL!

On Sunday evening, we met Adam and Mel at Scott City's Chinese restaurant since they could not come to her family party because of work.

Stan and I took her treats to school on Wednesday afternoon.  We took a treat that is also an activity for kids.  It is called chocolate playdough that is made from scratch.  Kids just love it!  I also have a recipe that you use milk chocolate chips and corn syrup.  If you want them, just let me know.  After the kids played with it, they ate it.  Since there are no eggs in it, it is totally safe.  I knew it was a success when several 9 and 10-year-olds asked for the recipe.  LOL!!!

Tuesday night was when we had the family party.  Those who were able to be here were Grandma, Neva Kiefer-Duncan, Nonny, Donna Lou Elder, Leif, Lori and Lars Christensen and Danny Romero.  We served bbq meatballs, everyone's favorite, a potato casserole, onion casserole, Grandma's special chocolate meringue pie and birthday cake.  We were stuffed!

So now things have returned to normal around here.

Thank You, Lord, for blessing us with such a beautiful angel!!!

Lynn's Update

You might remember that I was put in the hospital last week because of severe chest pain.  My doctor here was able to get me an appointment for this morning with my cardiologist in Hays.  Stan and I were hopeful but doing our best to be prepared just in case we would be told that surgery was necessary sooner instead of later.

My doctor came in.  Just the sight of him automatically makes us feel better.  He is a very thorough doctor and leaves nothing unchecked.  The final conclusion is that this is NOT heart-related.  YAY!  He taught us that cardiac pains are more like what I had in 2002.  They were very painful and lasted for quite some time.  The pains continued to worsen until my mechanical heart valve was installed in May of 2002.

In my current case, these pains are very sharp and very short-lived.  He believes that these are caused by my recent implant for my epilepsy that was installed in February.  He doubts that there is anything wrong with it.  Possible inflammation from the healing around the implant may be the culprit.  I already had an appointment scheduled for next week with my neurologist in Hays.  We'll discuss it then.  Sooo, the cardiologist sees no reason for concern.  I've only had one pain since last Thursday.

My doctor wants me to purchase a blood pressure machine so that I can check my presure eveyday and whenever I have a pain.  He also gave us some advice.  All able-bodied people should have a minimum of 155 minutes of exercise a week.  That breaks down to just under 23 minutes per day.  Walking, as he explained, is a great form to get it.  He also told us that walking at your own pace, slow or quick, is wonderful.

All of your prayers, cards, phone calls are sooooooooooooooo very much appreciated!!!

Easter Sunday

It wa a beautiful Sunday here.  We were very fortunate and entertained Grandma, Mama, Lori and Lars, Rob, Lona Sue and Hunter for the day.  Stan smoked a turkey and Seaboad ham.  A pe par, we had much wondeful food.  Thank You Lord for such blessings and for sending Your Son to us!  After eating, all 4 kids took their kites that Mama had given them out to fly in our nearby pasture.  They thoroughly enjoyed that and playing basketball in our backyard.

Stan will. be driving me to Hays this morning for my appointment with my cardiologist.  I'll keep you updated.  I've only had one chest pain since I was admitted to the hospital on Thursday.  That was this morning and did not last long.  Thank you for your prayers!

A GREAT BIG Thank You

goes out to the Wichita County EMTS who responded to my 9-1-1 call yesterday when I was having chest pains.  Your assistance is alway welcome to your patients.  Once you arrive, we begin to feel calmer.  Another HUGE thank you goes to Marie and the rest of the Wichita County Hospital staff who took excellent care of me while I was in the emergency room and after I was admitted to the hospital.  I hope that the residents of our county know just how very fortunate we are to have such an outstanding health care center and medical personnel that we've been blessed with here.

For those of you who came to visit me in the hospital, allow me to say THANK YOU!!!  This was a very scary situation and your support meant the world to me.

I was released from the hospital this morning to come home.  An appointment has been set up with my cardiologist in Hays first thing Monday morning.  Right now, it looks like no additional heart damage was done.  It is believed that a piece of the blood clot in my mechanical heart valve broke away and got into my lung.  Yesterday's pain and low oxygen percentage in my body was probably caused by it getting out of my lung.

I will update you on what we learn Monday next week.

In the meantime, My family and I would greatly appreciate any and all prayers.

As of March 17th, my surgery had been over for one full month.  In Less than 2 weeks, I will celebrate the 2nd month.  And when I say CELEBRATE, I mean just that.  As you may recall, I had a multitude of seizures in the weeks and days leading to my VNS surgery.  My family and I were quite concerned.  Since surgery, I've just had 2 daytime seizures.  I don't know if I've had any nightime seizures.  I will have that answer on April 18th when I meet with my neurologist again.  The two seizures that I have had have been much less severe.  I "shocked" myself with my magnet for the second seizure.  It worked just like it was supposed to.  It cut off my seizure and provided a shorter recovery time.

My family and I believe that my depression has lessened also.  I am enjoying laughing more often again.  Our family time is even more special to me than it has been for awhile.  Once the depression had worsened, it became harder and harder to leave the shell that had been built around me.  I have now begun to crack that shell in a big way which has allowed the sunshine to enter into my life.  I am not completely past the depression yet but I am much better.  I request that you continue to pray for me.  Your prayers are definitely being answered over and over.

Thank you!!!

Kansas' 2012 Wheat Crop

It was announced on the noon news today that our wheat crop is estimated to be 3 weeks ahead of schedule in its maturity.  This is the result of our mild winter.  This is rather scary as I understand it.  A late season hard freeze could destroy the crop.  Ordinarily our wheat in Kansas is ready for harvest by late June or early July.  What can we do to protect our wheat?  Pray.

Leoti's Rain Update

The Blaus house rainguage recorded 1.60 yesterday morning.  From 7:00 a.m. to 7:00 last night, it recorded another 1.25.  As of 7:00 this morning, it showed another .20.  All in all, we've had 3.05 since Monday evening.  Its been great!  Thank You, Lord!!!  During the noon news yesterday, more rain is in the forecast for us today and tonight.  You can bet that our farmers and anyone who enjoys their landscaping is thoroughly enjoying this blessing.  I know that I am.

Congratulations to Kansas

Kansas made it all the way through the 2012 NCAA Basketball Tournament.  Unfortunately, they lost to Kentucky just by 8 points.  Final score was 67 to 59.  I, for one, am very proud of our team.

Beautiful Rain

Last month, we received a very much needed 2 inches of rain in our area.  According to the Blaus house rainguage,  God sent us another 1.65 last night.  Thank You, Lord!!!  It looks like it could rain some more but I don't know if it is in the forecast or not.  We were at the junior high track meet in Lakin when it started.  Fortunately, most of the events were completed.  Teams there were Lakin, Cimarron and Leoti.  By the way, the Leoti Braves did an exceptional job of representing their school.

Emergency Situation

Word has been brought to my attention that three dogs are going to be killed in Lakin this week unless someone adopts them.  There is NO cost for any of them.  At least one of them is a purebred dog.    I THINK that their time is up on Tuesday so PLEASE call the Kearney County Sheriff's Office right away if you or someone you know is interested.  That phone number is 620.355.6211.

Please help these fine dogs find their forever homes.  There are puppies and adults there.  We will be in Lakin late tomorrow afternoon.  We'd be happy to bring these back to you!!!

Thank you!!!!!!!!

For Sale

With all of our remodeling, we have been getting rid of items we usually don't use anymore.  After purchasing our new laptop computer, we no longer need our computer desk that we purchased one year ago.  It is excellent.  It has shelves under it and more shelves above the desktop that can be used for CDs, DVDs and larger items.  This desk comes complete with the pull-out tray where your keyboard is stored when not in use.  Your monitor sets on top of the desk where you have plenty of room for doing office work, homework, etc.  Your CP unit/ Main Drive also set up under this very ample desktop.  This fits into a corner, not on a flat wall.  We are aking $30.00.  What a deal!

For more information, please call me at 375.8033.
