CORRECTION: New Bed and Breakfast

I was mistaken on the owners of the new B and B between the Fire Department and My mom's house on East "I" Street. It is owned by Leta Berning and Kathy Bangerter, not Duane Berning as originally wrote.

I have not been told when it will open.

Lynn's CRITIQUE on the RBSES Halloween Concert.

Today, October 30th, the RBSES Kindergarten through Sixth Graders gathered in the grade school gym for the the Third Annual Halloween Concert. Their vocal music instructor, Mrs. Jayme (Brown) Bishop, is a very gifted and dedicated teacher.

I took Grandma, Neva Kiefer-Duncan and my mom with me. Fortunately, we arrived at about 2:15 for the 2:30 performance! As early as we got there, people were having to walk 2 and 3 blocks to get to the school because of the high traffic caused by the concert. Thankfully, I have a permanent Handicap plackert so we were able to park at the curb right next to the gym doors. Once inside, very little available sitting space exhisted. People just seemed to continue to pour into the gym. All of the benches were full, many people sat on the floor or stood against the walls.

Grandma reminisced that there was a medicore crowd at the first concert, a much larger crowd last year but this year was much larger than we had anticipated. Jayme is the one who originated this particular concert in Leoti. As people hear the great things that others have to say about this and the other concerts that Jayme directs, more and more townspeople come out to enjoy them. I know that I have said this before, but I must say it again, Leoti is sooo very fortunate to have such talented and hardworking music professionals in our schools!

Today's concert was a delight to attend! Each grade sang one song. All grades' singers were very audible and understandable. They put out a very cute and enjoyable performance! Whenever a large group of children gather, there is a tendency for the kids not on stage to be loud and at times, annoying. In this case, the students who are not on stage, sit patiently on the gym floor. They are very quiet throughout the whole production. It is evident to see that they have learned to respect their vocal teacher and their fellow students.

My advice to you is to attend any and all of the music concerts that Jayme, Torie and Allen put on for the public. A GREAT deal of work and tears go into each performance. Their dedication shows when you see the quality of the performances time after time...

Wichita County SEASONAL Flu Vaccine

If you have not yet had your immunization, call the Health Department SOON!!! They currently have some left but not very much. Leighlyn, Abigayle and I received our vaccine yesterday afternoon. There was like a steady line of people going in yesterday to be vaccinated. The girls had the nasal mists instead of shots. Right now, I believe that there mists on hand are just for children with no major health issues but I may be wrong on that.

Weather event here

First of all, I want to thank everyone who sent me email or left birthday wishes in my blog's comments for me yesterday! Between those and my FACEBOOK buddies, I don't know when so many people took the time to be so kind in wishing me a great day!!! I also cannot tell you how much your sentimental comments mean to me as well. Sometimes, I am concerned that I might sound like a bawling baby at my end.

On to the weather...anyone who lives in our vicinity knows that fairly heavy rain returned to Wichita County on Wednesday night. Then, snow hit yesterday afternoon. It continued through late last night in town. It was just BEAUTIFUL!!! I LOVE the snow! Here in town, I doubt that we ended up with an inch but Goodland reported 4.8" and 4 miles west of Oakley had 4.0". It's getting closer to us! LOL! The winds have roared since last night here. The country roads as well as the dirt roads in town are BAD. My brudder-in-law, Leif Christensen, spent his whole day yesterday rescuing Seaboard trucks. His crew continued that throughout the night also.

I am also VERY thankful to our City of Leoti crew!!! For approximately the past two years, Aaron Matteson took over as City Superintendant. He is sooo good about making sure that Leoti runs smoothly in all aspects that he is concerned in. One of his main jobs is continuosly taking care of our streets in town. His employees are amongst the best that I have ever seen our City have. They work so diligently to make sure that our roads are smooth and in good repair. This really helps when we are bombarded with lots of moisture. Right now, they aren't as great as they were last week at this time but they are as good as what we can expect when we do not have paved streets. Thank you to Aaron and the WHOLE City crew!!! So many times, you appear to have a thankless job, just know that many of us notice the incredible work that you do everyday. Unfortunately, it seems that many of us don't bother to take time out to honor someone with their positive doings but we don't seem to have any problem tearing into people when they do something not quite like we want. Ugh!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

A few years ago, much of Kansas including us, had record-breaking Fall and Winter weather that really destroyed alot of dirt roads in town as well as in the country. Many of us who live or have dealings north of the railroad tracks in Leoti, were quite put out about the condition of our streets. Finally, a band of us from "A" Street and I attended a City Council meeting to complain. So many times since then I have been so thankful for the results that the Council put into motion for us. Roads were crowned which allowed water to run off of them instead of the flat roads that we had which just held all of the moisture on top until it eventually soaked in. On Second Street where we live, huge craters existed. I kid you not, one evening some of our family were on their way to our house for dinner. Just as they got ready to turn to our street, A BOY RAISED HIS HEAD out of one of the holes that also contained two other boys!!! If he would not have raised his head when he did, my family would not have known that they were there and would've run over them!!! That Council also hired Jones' Construction and my brudder-in-law, Leif, to place two dips in the street which runs just south of our house. They allow for better water drainage and also were placed there to slow down the major speeding that we had been having there for several years. We were so very concerned about someone getting run over.

Welcome to Winter!!!

Traditions...

Traditions are great, especially those that involve families. Our parents and grandparents, Pat and Donna Lou Elder, Don and Vera Pepper, and our honorary grandparents, Lee and Neva Kiefer, always made sure that these year-to-year traditions were carried through. They included such things as special foods, gift giving, etc for Thanksgiving, Christmas, Easter... Another important tradition in our home, like so many others, was the group singing of the ever-popular Happy Birthday to the birthday celebratee as soon as he/she awakened for the day.

As my sisters, Lori and Lona Sue and myself left our protective homes and entered into the "real" world of college and marriage, that tradition carried on through the usage of the telephone. Bright and early, those much anticipated and loved messages came through. To this day, Mama, Lori, Lona Sue, Hunter, Lars, Leighlyn, Abigayle and myself continue singing through the airwaves on those very special days. I like to believe that as our particular generations pass on, that our children will continue to pass that torch of love and joy onwards to each other, and their children...

Forty-eight years ago today, October 29th, my Daddy stood in a cramped labor room at the Wichita County Hospital as Mama presented him with identical twin daughters. They were expecting one baby which was a good thing since my sister died before birth. I remember how Daddy told me that as soon as he heard me take my first breath and begin to whoop and holler, his stinging tears of joy flooded his face. Those tears of joy again surfaced when Lori and Lona Sue made their entrances into our world. Daddy was not the kind of man who cried at the drop of a hat. He didn't have much control over that though when his three daughters and only biological grandchild whom he ever had the opportunity to welcome into our very tightly-knit family, were born.

From October 29th, 1961, I was blessed with the greatest parents ever!!! I so hate the fact that my birthday in 1994 was my last that I actually heard his voice singing Happy Birthday to me. However, when Mama calls to give me her wishes, I still think that I can hear Daddy's voice in-tune with her. Call me crazy, (alot of people have), but it still brings tears of joy to my eyes when I think that I am hearing his beautiful voice singing to me...

When Mama made her annual celebratory call to me this morning, she told me that Daddy was the one who started that tradition in our family. That is so very special especially given the fact that Daddy was an orphan by the age of 6-years-old. After that, he was bounced from one loving sister to the next. Daddy was blessed with 6 great sisters who had all been born before his five brothers and himself. The sisters finished raising the brothers from where their parents, Roy and Helen, had left off. Uncle Lee and Aunt Neva raised Daddy for most of those years. (In case you're interested, here is the list of Daddy's brothers and sisters: Alice Summers, Addie Strobridge, Bessie Burch, Ruby Whitney, Neva Kiefer-Duncan and Laura whom passed away when she was still a child. His brothers included Buck, Red, Frank, Dick and Lewis. Alice was the oldest and Daddy was the youngest. Today, only 3 of the twelve children remain-- Alice, Bessie and Neva.)

Since I believe that EVERY family should have their own traditions, I say that it is never too early or too late to start them... The future generations of your family will appreciate them.

Artwork On Display

If you enjoy art, you need to go to the Wichita County Courthouse or Western State and Security State Banks in Leoti. For awhile, the work of R.B.S.E.S' first through sixth grade students will be spotlighted.

Mrs. Paul (Martha) Meyers is their instructor. She has been teaching art in Leoti for a couple of years now. Before this year, an official art classroom was available. However, that has changed now since the sixth grade students have been transferred from the junior high to the grade school. Now, no empty classrooms were available. So, Mrs. Meyers is now pushing her art cart from classroom to classroom. That's dedication!!! Mrs. Meyers is not employed by the Wichita County School System. She was hired by the Wichita County Arts Council.

In the past few years, the government has been trying to cut costs by deleting "unnecessary" programs from public education. Those courses of study usually consist of arts, music and band. We are so very fortunate to have the outstanding vocal and instrumental departments under the direction of Mrs. Jayme Bishop, Mrs. Torrie Graff and Mr. Alan Brockmeier. These three great instructors continue to turn out highly skilled musicians! These teachers are employees of the school system.

When the Arts Council learned that Wichita Countians were in danger of losing their art program, they stepped forward and offered to provide the money necessary to allow art to continue here. Not all school districts are that fortunate.

Personally, I am very happy that our children continue to learn and explore their individual strengths in art, music and band. Not everyone excells in bookwork. Not everyone excells in sports. Artwork presents a different venue for everyone to attain success.

If you wish to make a donation to the Arts Council, please contact Janelle Downs. I am also sure that if you do not live in Wichita County and your school district is looking at the possibility of shutting down the arts, Janelle would be happy to give you advice at doing what they so graciously have done for us.

For what my opinion is worth...LOL!!!

As most of you know, Leoti's new cafe, Route 96, opened a week ago today. Until today, we have never been able to check it out since so much illness has been going on at home. However, today, my mom and I decided to order lunch to go. The lunch specials sounded really good! My mom chose the meatloaf special which also sounded very good to me but since I don't believe that all meatloaves are created equally, Mama's meatloaf spoiled me, I chose to go the safe way--a chicken fry.

When I called in our order, the lady on the phone told me that I should expect our lunch to be ready for pick-up in 15 minutes. Fifteen minutes later, I arived at the cafe. Though it was only 11:30, a good crowd had already arrived to eat. I fully anticipated that our meal would understandably be a bit later than originally anticipated. Instead, the meals were already to go.

The cafe really looks nice! Its amazing how much different a place can look after a fresh coat of paint, new carpet and three new windows are in place. Before, the rooms always seemed so cold and dismal when the concrete floors were visible. This carpeting has really warmed up the ambiance, so to speak. Anyone who knows me knows that I am really into interior design and decorating. I can tell you that I was not disappointed in how the cafe looks. Its been tastefully put together. Its the kind of place where "normal" people will be comfortable.

Now then, the way that I was dressed, was a different story...My father is Pat Elder. He couldn't have cared less about how someone looked. He never noticed if they were wearing thousand dollar outfits or if they had just donned clothes that were yesteryears' fashion. What counted to him was the person INSIDE the garments. Fortunately or unfortunately, I followed in his footsteps. Very seldom did he actually dress up. Usually, he wore a pair of jeans and a shirt that may have been filled with little holes from welding sparks, paint and tar splatters that were common with his occupation, carpentry. As much as my family despices, I normally do not dress up either. Its normal for you to find me wearing shorts...sweats...something that usually has paint on it from one of my many paint jobs. JUst about all of the year's 365 days, I'm wearing a pair of light blue slip on clogs. Yeppers, that's right. I dress like that day in and day out unless I am going out of town, to church or some other special function. Today was no different. I dressed in an orange and yellow tee shirt that has gone through several different paint jobs all with different colors of paint, a pair of beige shorts that have been through different paint acts, a mid-length winter coat and the topping of the outfit (or should I say, the bottoming) was my light blue clogs. I looked about as snazzy as possible. LOL! I kinda learned a lesson today though. I actually felt abit displaced there. So, from now on, I will put on a nicer pair of jeans and a CLEAN tee shirt. I probably won't park my light blue clogs though...

Mama's meatloaf looked and tasted great! As soon as I saw my chicken fry, my memory was transported back to Mrs. Fuller's Steakhouse in downtown Horace, Ks.--just outside of Tribune. She made the BEST chicken fries ever! My fork easily slid through my meat. The flavor was astonishing!!! Not a bit of grissell could be found. I still cannot believe that the Route's chicken fry tastes just as wonderful and perfect as Mrs' Fuller's! I ordered a baked potato with my steak. It, too, was perfectly prepared but I learned that they are not available until after 5:00 p.m. That, too, is quite understandable. Our white gravy was homemade and divine. The texas toast was quite tender and tasty. We were quite impresed with the prices! Both of us ate a very good meal with very ample servings for only $16.00! I will be trying out their breakfasts some other time. You can count on me to give my opinion on it also. I have already heard that people LOVE their breakfasts just as well as lunch and dinner! So, my advice is that you owe it to yourself to come and check the new cafe out. I think that you'll be quite happy that you did!

They are open from 6-2:00 a.m. and 5-9:00 p.m. CST every day!!! For take-out orders, etc, please call them at 620-375-2400.

My blog

As you already know, I was really torn up over the phone call that I received Sunday evening. As if the call itself was not bad enough, it came at a time when I was really feeling down and out. I am sure that the two coupled together did me no good.

Since I published that entry on Sunday, I have received several comments on my blog itself, email and have either had people talk to me directly or to Stan. I CANNOT tell you how much each and every comment meant to me! The person who was upset with me has never ever been my biggest fan so I don't know why I was so shocked about his/her phone call. I am a super-sensitive person who takes EVERYTHING to heart. Since I don't go out of my way to hurt others, I can't quite grasp the concept of others finding delight in such things. But, we can't all be appreciated by the people in our lives so I will just accept his/her opinion of me and go on with my life. That's just how the cookie crumbles. Right???

There will be some changes from this point on. I never intended for this to be a "gossip rag" as it was described. Whatever I post is never to hurt or damage ANYONE!!! So, from now on, if you feel the urge to slam anyone besides me with your comments, PLEASE do not add the comment to my blog. I just want to provide information that I think people might appreciate or at least enjoy reading. I want NO ONE persecuted here. LOL!!! Of course, I still want your comments!!! You don't know how much I value them even if you don't always agree with my opinion on a certain matter. Diversity of opinions makes our world interesting, don't ya' think?

As always, I will continue to publish the current Tribune--movie--of--the--weekend whenever I am able to get the information. Normally, I get that info from the theatre's answering machine but it is not always updated. I am sure that the managers have better things to do than to make sure that I am abreast of the movie. LOL!!!

I will continue publishing the obituaries for people from or related to people in Wichita, Greeley and Scott Counties.

I WILL NO LONGER add any birth, engagement, wedding or illness announcements unless the involved people notify me of their desire to have it posted in my blog!!! I definitely do not want to trample upon anyone's toes.

I WILL, however, post information that you want me to. If that is the case, please call me at 620-375-4584 or send me an email at slblaus@gmail.com

If there are any other bits of information that you are interested in reading here, please let me know and I will do my best to get it for you as long as no one gets hurt in the process.

From time to time, I am sure that there will be more add-ons than at other times. Because of my various health conditions, I am not supposed to be outside if the temperature is below 40 degrees or above 80 degrees. So...when I am indoors, I will probably be writing extra stories, etc.

I sooo very much appreciate each and every one of you who takes prescious time out of your very busy schedules to check into my blog!!!

Sincerely yours,

VLE-B

LYNN'S PERMANENT LEAVE OF ABSENCE

As I said earlier, I was sick and going back to bed after my previous blog edition. That did not prevent me from getting a phone call from an upset relative of mine. After listening to what she/he had to say, I have decided that my blog must come to an end effective immediately. Let me explain why and offer my apologies to anyone whom I may have offended with my blog.

As you know, I wrote about birth announcements, engagement and wedding announcements. NEVER ONCE did I place that info on my blog UNTIL it was published in The Leoti Standard. I believe that passing something like that out BEFORE it has been formally announced in a periodical is just plain wrong. I also mentioned various events that were happening in our family's lives. Tonight, I was scorned for doing so. The person who called believed that much of my information is a breach of privacy to those concerned and nothing less or more than gossip. I am so very sorry for infringing on anyone's privacy.

Of course, I NEVER would have made comments about who was dating who, who was getting a divorce, etc. That would have been way over the limit as far as I was concerned. In the past, my family and I have been extremely hurt by things that people said about us that were about as untrue as anything could ever be. I sincerely never wanted to do the same thing to anyone else.

Since my writings have become detrimental to some, I believe that it is time for me to simply bow out. I cannot tell you how much I have enjoyed writing to you every day! What a thrill it has been to me to receive your email, comments, phone calls and visits on the street about what you thought of what I wrote. I honestly felt like I was making a POSITIVE difference. Now, I find out that it was negative instead.

I am sorry to the ones whom I have upset!

Good-bye, my family and friends.

Distrbution of the H1N1 Vaccine in Kansas

Our doctor friend sent me this breakdown that is very interesting.

The Federal Government oversees vaccine development testing for safety and efficacy, manufacturing of the vaccine and approves the licensure of the vaccine.

Vaccine is manufactured by five companies.

The CDC (Center of Disease Control) determines the vaccine quantity for Kansas based on population-based allocations.

The following are the processes that will be repeated every week:

A. Each week, the KDHE, Kansas Department of Health and Environment, allocates Kansas' share of the vaccine among each of the state's counties. County allocations are based on 2008's census data for 0-24-year-olds. Once the vaccine demand has been satisfied for the five priority groups, allocations will be calculated on the total poulation.

B. Vaccine is distributed to local health depatments or their designees by McKesson, the health care service company contracted by the U.S. Government to deliver H1N1 vaccine as well as the quantites.

C. Each county makes decisions on vaccine allocations within their jurisdiction.

D. The allocations are based on the 2008's census data of the county's 0-24-year-olds populaion to meet the largest priority population group's needs. Once the vaccine demand of that population group has been met, four of the five priority group allocations will be calculated on the total population.

E. Priority groups which are determined nationally by the Advisory Committee of Immunization Practies are

* Pregnant women

* Household contacts and caregivers of infants younger than 6 months of age.

* All children and young adults between the ages of 0 and 24-years-of age.

* Healthcare and Emergency health care services (EMS) personnel.

* People aged 25 through 64-years-of age with certain high rise medical conditions.

Scott Janssen of Scott City

Scott was born on April 4th, 1967 and passed away on October 24th, 2009, at the Kansas City Hospice Hospital in Kansas City, Missouri at the age of 42.

Scott spent his youth in Scott City and graduated at Scott Community High School. He then went on to pursue his education at Colby Community College where he was on the National Championship Livestock Judging Team. After that, he went on to Kansas State University where he received his Bachellor's Degree in Animal Science.

Together with his wife, Leslie Karnes-Janssen whom he married on November 15th, 1994, he built Jansenn Training Stables which is a much-loved landmark for people of the horse community.

He is survived by his wife, his parents, Alfred and Sally, grandmothers, Rosemary and Juanita, one brother, 1 sister and 4 loving nieces and nephews.

The family will receive friends from 6-7:30 on Monday, October 26th at Warren-McElwain Mortuary in Eudora, Kansas. A second funeral service will be held at Scott City's Methodist Church on Wednesday, October 28th. (I do not know what time that service will be held.) Burial will be in the Scott County Cemetary.

The family suggests that memorial donations be given to the Kansas Quarter Horse Association Scholarship Fund, Hospice House in Kansas City, Mo., or the Kansas University Cancer Center and may be sent in care of Price and Sons Funeral Home of Scott City.

Someone who doesn't even live here is fighting for Wichita Countians' health!!!

As you know, a doctor in Italy reads my blog. She is so very kind and knowledgeable! She became concerned last week when she heard of the fact that the flu has taken over our lives here. The closing of the schools, nursing home and thrift shop really made her happy. Until measures are taken like this, we have little chance of getting people well again anytime soon.

I was sooo impressed when I found out that she actually took time out of her very busy schedule to actually call the Kansas Health Department in Topeka , not once but a few times. She explained to them that we are very sick out here and have had very little seasonal vaccine and NO H1N1 serum to date. The last time that she spoke with them, they assured her that a shipment was currently peing processed for shipment to us. We owe her ALOT of gratitude!!! She really got the ball rolling for us! I doubt if someone without a degree in medical science could have been even taken seriously.

They also told her that Walgreens in Garden City has the serum now. I have been told that each vaccination is $25.00.

The Center for Disease Control (CDC) reports that the U.S. now has 55 million students and 7 million staff on board in more than 130,000 private and public schools in the U.S. each day. That is the equivalent of 1/5th of our total United States' total population. Therefore, when epidemics hit the school system, a sizeable amount of people are effected. Then, those people go on to spread the virus outside of the schools' doors. Very scary, huh???

Here is some advice that ALL of us should be following at this time:

1. The ill students should be seperated from the other students and staff immediately as soon as the symptoms appear. Some schools have designated a room just for people with flu-like symptoms. Those people who are ill and the people who are dealing with them in that room should wear surgical masks as long as they are in the school.

2. EVERYSONE should wash their hands OFTEN with soap and keep their hands away from their faces. When a person sneezes or coughs, they should use a shirt sleeve, tissues or the inside of their elbow.

3. School staff and we at home should frequently clean with the same products that we normally use. The CDC does NOT believe that we should be using additional disinfection and environmental surface products. We just need to clean more often than normal.

4. High-risk individuals, the pregnant, heart and lung patients, people with cancer, etc., should speak with their health care providers EARLY AS SOON AS FLU SYMPTOMS FIRST APPEAR!!! Early treatment with anti-viral medicines can and do save lives.

5. Schools can be closed down when high numbers of students and staff become ill. School boards are responsible for making that decision. Whenever high numbers of students, staff are sick with the flu, it is probably a good idea if screenings of each person who walks through the doors be done. High risk students/staff should stay at home until the virus moves on down the road.

ANY STUDENT WHO HAS SICK MEMBERS WITH FLU AT THEIR HOMES, SHOULD NOT GO TO SCHOOL EVEN IF THEY, THEYMSELVES, FEEL GOOD!!! ONCE THE FAMILY MEMBERS HAVE BEEN SICK FOR 5 DAYS, IT IS OKAY FOR THAT STUDENT TO RETURN TO SCHOOL.

People who have had flu symptoms should not return to school or the public, in general, for at least 7 days after they became sick EVEN IF THEY ARE NO LONGER HAVING ANY SYMPTOMS.

When it is determined that school should be cancelled because of illness, it should not resume for 5-7 calendar days, not school days, until the flu's severity has passed.

I hope that this information is helpful for you.

Be Aware

As you know, I have been writing ALOT about the flu epidemic that has engulfed Wichita County. Steps have been taken to close down the schools, thrift shop, etc in order for people to heal more rapidly. I am so very thankful for those things! I am very hopeful that people are doing the right thing--keeping everyone at home. As far as our family here is concerned, both girls are having temperatures much closer to normal. Their laughter has returned and they are acting much more natural again. Praise the Lord!!!

However, not everyone is improving. Others are just now starting to have the flu symptoms, both the intestinal and the respiratory.

My mother, has had the flu for awhile also. For the most part, she was fever-free and just had the respiratory side of this virus. However, during the past few days, she has become worse. She has a practically constant cough and fever now. Fortunately, my sister Lori, called the clinic today and asked if she could make an appointment for our mom. She explained that she thought that Mama now has a sinus infection. As you know, the local clinics and hospitals ae not wanting people to come in with the flu symptoms because there is not anything that can be done. That is true UNLESS the flu has gone on to cause more severe problems.

My mom was given an appointment. Once there, it was discovered that she now has very severe bronchitis that is on the verge of pneumonia. Antibiotics were prescribed and she was sent home with orders of strict bed rest. If she gets worse within the next couple of days, she is to come to the emergency room IMMEDIATELY. Our family would GREATLY appreciate your prayers for her! She is a very ill lady right now.

If you or your loved ones feel that you are getting worse or develop new symptoms, it would be in your best interest to call your local health authorities for their advice. Good news! The hospitals are always open 24- hours- a- day! As I told you earlier, if a fever does not go down even after fever medications have been given or after a LUKEWARM bath, call the doctor. If the fever is accompanied by severe neck and/or ear pain, CALL YOUR DOCTOR IMMEDIATELY!!!

Irritating!!!

We subscribe to the Garden City Telegram. It is supposed to be delivered to us 6 days a week. It USUALLY gets to us each of those days. However, in the beginning, the paper guys would just toss it anywhere. If we got it, we got it, if not, too bad!!! We'd sometimes find it in our yard, under the cars, IN THE STREET or in some dog's mouth! No, we were not happy with this situation so we went to Walmart and bought a mailbox that we could screw onto our house. Let me describe that for just a second here. It has a lid that you lift up so that the mail, in our case, the newspaper, could be placed inside, the lid would then be closed again. That way, everything stays nice and dry. Under the mailbox, are two hooks that newspapers, etc can be placed. We should not have any problems now with our paper, right? WRONG!!!

As soon as the box was in place and ready for business, I stopped the paper guys and showed them the box. I explained to them that it was in place JUST FOR THE NEWSPAPER. (Our mail is delivered at home but it is delivered at curbside in town.) I all but BEGGED them to PLEASE put the newspaper in it's proper place. I also told them that I am not allowed outside if the temperature is less than 40 degrees and higher than 80 degrees because of my heart issues. With the newspaper just next to the front door, I could retieve it easily every day. They understood.

Since then, they've been good about putting it in the hooks. On rainy days, they wrapped the newspapers in plastic bags for everyone on their route so I had no issue with them. That was, until yesterday.................. Rain began making it's very welcome appearance on Tuesday night and just continued off and on, mainly on, throughout the day on Wednesday. When we discovered no paper in the hooks, we went on a search for where it may have ended up. WE FOUND IT!!! It was out by the car again with NO plastic bag!!! Yep, you guessed it. It was soaked! Errr...

Anyone else have this problem??? In the beginning, I had to call the newspaper office 3 times before the boys finally worked out their problems. It took us threatening to discontinue our subscription before everything straightened out. I know, I know, these paper boys aren't exactly getting rich from their job but they agreed to take on this responsibility for whatever amount that the newspaper dictated. After that, I also gave them a hefty tip every three months when I paid our bill.

What has happened to professional integrity? My parents taught us that no job was worth doing unless we did it at the best of our capabilities. Daddy would go out and clean clogged sewer lines regardless of weather conditions. And...he did it for his regular service fees. Nothing extra for being in heavy rain, snow, etc. In 1994, he was dying of cancer throughout his body but he still managed to do his work. Ya' wanna know what hefty amount of money he charged to clean sewer lines? A whopping $35.00!!! No extra money was charged even if it took a whole day to get the sewer line completely cleaned up. In order to get his sewer cleaner to the sewer line, he had to get the very heavy machine out of his pick-up to the ground, pull it to the sewer source, clean, pull it back to the pick-up and lift it back into the back end of his pick-up. That's tough enough for a well person let alone someone who was FAR from being up-to-par!!!

Without naming the store, without naming the employee whom I am referring to, I am so very tired of going in to buy something off of the shelves only to find the shelf empty. That's okay. I know that there are surplus amounts of that product in the back room normally. All I have to do is ask someone who works there to please retrieve me some from the back. (I am referring to 6-packs of good ol' Coca-Cola.) But, when the manager is off, the employee who I am referring to, REFUSES to walk to the backroom of the store to get some for me. Instead he/she just tells me that he/she does not think that there are any more back there. It is ALWAYS the same employee who tells me that lie. If I am lucky, that person IS OFF for the evening so that someone else is working in his/her place. I wonder. At the end of the day/evening, is he/she convinced that he/she just did the best job possible??? Once again, I am quite aware that store clerks are not making a mint but they agreed to take the job and do the best that they could. Right??? Then, why aren't they all working at the best of their ability? If shabby work is the best of their ability, then maybe the management needs to hire someone else who CAN do good work.

Just another of my worthless opinions...

My personal opinion

Today's weather reminds me of my Daddy's, Pat Elder's, memorial service on May 1st of 1995. It was held at the Methodist Church in Leoti that morning. Even though the church is quite large, many people were unable to be indoors to say good-bye to him. People spilled out into the balcony, hallways, Sunday School classes, fellowship hall and even outside. Fortunately, a speaker system was in place so that all in attendance could listen to the services.

It was at that time that I realized that your funeral is evidence of whether or not you lived a good and successful life. If you were good to people and did all that you could to make life better for others, chances are that you will be honored with a good attendance to say good-bye.

Wichita County Schools

We were just notifed that there will be NO SCHOOL on Thursday, October 22nd, due to illness. Friday classes had been previously cancelled due to parent-teacher conferences. The conferences have now been postponed until Tuesday, October 27th, from 5-8:30 p.m. The high school football game is still scheduled for Friday evening and volleyball will still be played on Saturday.

I am hoping that parents will do the right thing and keep their children at home until school resumes so that a good handle can be placed on this virus. If the child is showing ANY flu symptoms, I HOPE that they will be kept away from others outside of their home. Personally, we have placed a note on our front door notifying people that we have the flu here and don't want to share it with anyone. They're very welcome to come back on a later date or to give us a phone call.

Dennis Elder--10/21/09

Dennis and Susan are doing pretty well! Dennis is enjoying getting out and going more places that he has been! He is currently reading PICKING UP THE PIECES, a book that helps him cope with everything that he has been and is going through.

They are thankful for the people who are taking care of their farming while they are not able to do it themselves.

Dennis and Susan are asking for extra prayers for family members who are going through their own particular health challenges. Susan's stepfather has FIVE malignant brain tumors. Her sister just found out that she has breast cancer. A cousin has a multitude of health problems. Susan is so upset that she is unable to be with them to help them through all of their problems.

They appreciate EVERY prayer and encourage all of us to spread some love and sunshine around as it does the soul good! Their friend, Peepy-the-Skunk, continues to come and visit them on a regular basis!

(On a personal note, God never gives us more than we can handle but sometimes we have to wonder if we are really as strong as God thinks we are! LOL!!!)

Route 96 is now OPEN

Route 96, our new and great cafe, just opened the door for business this week! I have heard so very many GREAT things about it! People are commenting on how customers just keeping showing up throughout the day. There seems to be no dull moments there!

We will not be able to try it out until all of us are well again but in the meantime, we are enjoying hearing the various comments from people who have been there. Amongst things that I have heard is how attractive the decor is. How BIG it looks now since the building was overhauled. The food is wonderful and fresh. The wait staff is very professional and johnny-on-the-spot. The list goes on and on...

They are open EVERY DAY from 6-2:00 and 5-9:00. Route 96 is located in the VFW building on the east side of town.

Come and enjoy!!!

My reply

As always, I appreciate everyone's comments. I may not always agree with them but that is life.

No. Having the school shut down for a couple of days is not going to make the virus just magically disappear. I believe that this stuff moved in here little by little and now, lot by lot. I am sure that it will go out in just the same ways.

We also know that this virus is not just affecting school children. People who hardly ever come into contact with children are also very sick. So...yes, this is community wide. But, as long as parents are willing to send their kids to school while they are not 100% well, this virus is just going to keep spinning and spinning around going from one person to the next. Leighlyn missed school all of last week. We could have sent her back to school on Thursday but we decided against it. School was going to be closed on Friday. We knew that there were still alot of people sick with this at school so why risk sending her to school for one day and then have her sick all over again. I stand by our decision. So, by Saturday, she was as good as new. We sent her back to school Monday morning. Then, when she got home, her temp was elevated again. All day today, I have fought her fever by alternativg Tylenol and Motrin. As of 30 minutes ago, her temp is up to 102.2 again. Honestly, I believe that had she not gone to school yesterday, she would still be fine tonight. Her body hurts so badly that she is crying. The vomiting has returned not to mention her cough.

I called the hospital AGAIN tonight when Leighlyn became worse. After hearing of her symptoms, the nurse called the doctor on call who advised that Leighlyn not come to the hospital unless after two days, she is no better. Of course, if she starts having breathing difficulties or has pain in her ears, she needs to get to the doctor right away.

No, the school is not responsible for her illness.

The parents who don't keep their kids home from school when they are sick are responsible.

The parents who allow their kids to go downtown when they are sick are responsible.

The parents who allow their unhealthy kids to go over to friends' houses are responsible.

The adults who go to work when they are running fevers and hacking all over the place are responsible for keeping this virus going. I know, people must make money but should it be at the cost of making other people ill?

I KNOW that our schools' staffs are working very diligently to sanitize everything as well as they can. I guess what I am trying to convey is that if people are not responsible enough to keep their sick at home, then maybe someone else should make the decision for them.

Our community thrift shop is usually open every Tuesday and Friday. Today, it was closed down because of all of the people who continue to come in and shop while they are not well. I applaud the powers-that-be of the thrift shop! Who knows how many well people they protected today by not having them exposed to the sick who would have undoubtedly shown up to shop!

Maybe I am a wee bit radical on this subject. If I have offended you, I apologize. But, stop and think about my perspective for just a few seconds. My children are my world. They're my life. I am like every other parent, I cannot stand to see them ill. But, then lets go just one little step further. I have major heart, lung, circulatory system problems that can cause my death very easily. Whenever I am around contagious people, my chances of becoming seriously ill are multiplied. Yes, people with my health problems are supposed to have vaccinations to repel seasonal flu and H1N1. However, enough seasonal flu vaccine serum has not arrived in Leoti yet. I will keep calling until the next batch has arrived. So far, H1N1 serum has not even made it to Leoti yet as far as I am aware.

Sincerely,

Lynn's ANGRY

Part of the reason that I established this blog was to be a form of therapy for myself. It has definitely helped!

Now, today, I return to my trusty keyboard to discuss my feelings of anger and dismay this morning.

As I told you yesterday, parents chose not to send their children to school yesterday because of illness. We kept Abigayle home. By noon yesterday, OVER ONE HUNDRED kids from grade school and high school were sent home because they were sick. That is NOT to say that the ones who stayed in school were feeling dandy. As soon as Leighlyn got off of the school bus, I could tell just by looking at her that she was sick AGAIN. Yep, her temp was 100 degrees and her whole body ached. Of course, meds were given to her to take the fever down as well as to treat the new batch of symptoms, cough, messed up nose, horrible headache, etc. During the night, her temp went up to 102 degrees at one point. At 7;00 this morning it was down to 101. She still thinks that she is freezing.

As you know, she no longer had a fever and was feeling back to normal except for still being tired way before the weekend started. Now, look what happened after being back to school for just ONE day!!!

Can someone PLEASE tell me WHY it is imperative that we not cancel school at this time? I know of at least one teacher who is sick with this junk. What's going to happen when all of the teachers and subs are sick??? When a classroom of usually 23 kids is down to 6 or 7, the teacher goes from being a professional educator to glorified babysitter. I DON'T GET IT!!!

Yes, I know that the custodians are doing their best ro rid the school of the nasties. They're even spraying each and every locker handle with Lysol, etc. My non-professional opinion is that is not going to be enough. Common sense tells me that the kids and teachers need to stay home and recuperate while the necessary cleaning is done at the schools. My God! I am concerned about our children's defenses being down because of these viruses and then when H1N1 comes around, they will have no natural way of fighting it at all!!!

Tell me what you think or better yet, call the people who make these decisions!!!

We are blessed with such fine people at our Health Department and School Board Office but this is one decision I just cannot wrap my head around!!!

School is IN

Teachers reported today that school WILL NOT BE CANCELLED due to illness. This was determined by the Wichita County Health Department and the Wichita County School Board Office.

As I reported earlier, there was a number of students who did not go to school this morning. Seventy-two of the grade school kids who went to school, went home between 8:30 and noon. I assume that more went home after noon. Somewhere between 30 and 40 high school students went home throughout the day.

Personally, I do not understand why they are continuing to have school but I am sure that there are reasons that school should go on that I am unaware of.

I'll let you know if anything changes on that front.

Leoti grade school

Abigayle did not go to school today because she has the respiratory junk and her fever was 101.6 last night. Fortunately, it is normal now. I think that she is on the mend.

In her classroom, there are 23 kids. As of 8:30 this morning, only EIGHT kids were at school. By 11:30, 2 more kids went home sick. Since then, I heard that another child went home!!!

From 8:30 to noon today, 72 more kids went home because they were sick. I have no idea how many kids didn't go to school at all today. Those 72 kids were just grade school students!!! I have no idea how many high school kids were home sick. At least 1/3rd of the grade school kids are sick. A couple of weeks ago, Ness City cancelled school when 1/3rd of the kids were sick. I hope that they do that here also! Otherwise, the illnesses just keep spreading throughout the school and then throughout the county, etc.

Abigayle

Just when I thought that all of us were pretty much back to normal, our Princess Abigayle is sick again. Her symptoms include a low temperature, VERY stuffy and runny nose, bad cough and sleepiness. Even though her temp is only 99.3 degrees, I felt like I just had to call the hospital. I just don't think that we should ever take any chances with our children's health especially with H1N1 at everyone's front door.

I gave the list of symptoms to the RN on duty. I wanted to pass her advice on to all of you in case you face the same thing. She told me that what I described is raging like wildfire through our neck of the woods. I told her that we have been giving the girls and us Mussinex with cough formula (it also has an expectorant to get rid of the chest congestion), Tylenol, ibuprofen and Robitussin if necessary. She told me that that is exactly what they are recommending patients to do UNLESS the temp gets up to like 103-104 degrees and nothing, no Tylenol, no ibuprofen, no lukewarm bath will bring it down. At that point, you need to get to the hospital so that additional medical treatment can be done.

In the meantime, encourage alot of bedrest and plenty of fluids to help wash the junk out and to keep bodies well-hydrated.

We learned that we were all but out of the Tylenol and ibuprofen for little kids such as Abigayle. Stan went straight to Dollar General to pick up both only to find that EVERY LAST BOTTLE of children's fever medications is GONE except for Tylenol Meltaways. This is very scary for local parents! To my knowledge, this is the first time that they have ever been out of these medicines. They normally keep a plentiful supply on hand so this should tell us how many people are sick here right now. So...it may not be such a bad idea to stock up on all over-the-counter drugs for fever control for the people in your home.

H1NI claims first death in Southwest Kansas

A 48-year-old woman has lost her fight to live against H1N1. The Kansas Department of Health and Environment (KDHE) released this information yesterday. They allow that information to be released to the public but no other details such us the victim's name or actual address is released.

The lady also had ongoing health problems which made her a prime target for the virus.

Little by little, the H1N1 vaccination is now being distributed in Kansas. So far, I know that people in the health care industry in Garden City began receiving their immunizations on Thursday of this week. To my knowledge, that is the first location for thevaccinations in Western Kansas. I also know that people in the Garden City area have also been sick with the virus.

It is VITALLY important that EACH of us does whatever we can to protect not only ourselves but the other people around us to stop the spread of this disease. Some people should receive their vaccinations earlier than others. Those people are anyone in the following groups:

1. Pregnant women
2. People who live with or care for children who are younger than 6-months-old
3. Health care and emergency medical service personnel
4. People from 6-months-old through 24-years-old
5. People from 25-64 who are susceptible because of chronic health conditions such as heart problems, lung problems including asthma, diabetes, cancer, etc.
6. People with AIDS

If you find yourself in any of the above groups of people, contact your health care providers soon so that you can be some of the first in your area to receive the vaccinations. I reported earlier, that people must take 2 vaccinations to be considered as safe as possible from H1N1.

The KDHE is no longer accepting specimens from everyone who may currently be sick with H1N1.

This disease is making a LARGE amount of adolesents and young adults very ill. Even the very young, healthy people are really being struck hard.

So far, the elderly don't seem to be having as much of a problem with H1N1 than the rest of us. However, they CAN and DO become ill with it.

Area clinics and hospitals are seeing MANY more patients with severe cases of influenza-like illnesses over the past few weeks. These numbers of people are considerably higher than normal for thistime of year. Schools in Southwest Kansas are having a very sizeable amount of ill students. Ness City closed their schools down for a few days already because of the amount of sick kids in their school district.

If you or your child is sick, STAY HOME!!!!!!!!!!!!!

H1N1 symptoms include
1. Fever over 100 degrees
2. Body aches
3. Coughing
4. Sore throat
5. Respiratory congestion
6. Vomiting
7. Diarrhea

Fortunately, MOST people recover without any medical treatment!!! Some people require hospitalization.

If you need to cough, PLEASE do not cough into your hand or tissue. Instead, cough into your shirt sleeve!!! Why??? When you cough into a kleenex or your hand, your germs are then transmitted onto door knobs, etc where other people also use. Thus, the germs have now been passed on down the line...

As soon as I hear that more seasonal and H1N1 flu vaccinations have arrived in Wichita County, I will post it into my blog.

Dennis Elder-10/15

Dennis' feeding tube was removed at Mayo on Thursday. Amen! He has been having bouts of pleurisy occassionally. Chest x-rays were done that showed that everything is looking good. Overall, he is doing very well and looking good! He is back to his fiesty self! Again, I say Amen.

He still has daily struggles that he must deal with. Most people spend at least part of their nights, lying on their sides. Dennis is not able to do that right now. So he is having to sleep with a Genie Gizmo that allows him to incline. That takes pressure off of his back. Hopefully, he will eventually be able to lie on his side again. (Note from Lynn: I don't know this to be a fact, but I ASSUME that doctors had to break his ribs so that they could operate on his esophagus. My surgeons had to do the same thing to me when they did my open heart surgery. Afterwards, the ribs are wired shut again. Eventually, the ribs heal but the wires stay in place. In my case, it took 2 months before I felt comfortable lying on my side and even longer before I could sleep on my stomach. It always felt like my heart, etc was falling forward. Not a good feeling.)

The weather is really nice right now so Dennis is starting to walk more. He and Susan are enjoying the little things in life that most of us take for granted.

PLEASE pray for Susan! Her headaches have gone from mild to border-line migraine. She is living with their recurrence every day now. Susan thinks that they are probably brought on by stress.

In God we trust.

Small town life

A month or so ago, I arrived at a local convenience store to purchase gas for our Buick. When I pulled in, I discovered that two lines had formed at the gas island. I have to admit that I was more than a bit perturbed when I learned that one of the vehicles parked at the gas island, wasn't even getting gas. The driver had just parked his vehicle there, went inside, purchased items and began shooting the breeze with whoever inside the store. Meanwhile, people couldn't get up to the pump next to his vehicle. And, yes, I know that he bought no fuel because his vehicle's gas tank was on the other side of his car!

A lady from Wichita had arrived at the store before me to buy gas. She had had to do some fancy driving to park her car at the pumps because of the inconsiderate driver. Eventually, the other driver got into his car and left. As soon as I had parked, I got out of my car and began fueling. The lady from Wichita and myself began visiting. I learned that she is a salesman for a well-known company that specializes in home decor. Part of her territory is in Western Kansas. I thoroughly enjoyed getting to know her and would welcome the opportunity to do it again!

Many of us small town folk would relish having stores, restaurants more available to us. How many of us would be thrilled if we just had to drive a few minutes to the local Wal-Mart or major shopping center? It would be great! I found that she also loves being able to do just that. But, she is envious of us out here who are part of our rural life atmosphere.

We seem to know just about everyone whom we meet at the grocery store. People actually wave to each other as we pass on the streets. When our children come home from school and ask if they can go to a certain friend's home, we usually always know that friend's family, where they live and whether or not we want our child to be associated with that person. Those things are taken for granted here but not so in larger communities. The lady misses those things in Wichita.

I think that most people would agree with me that it is a good feeling to know that people are here to support one another in times of various stressful situations that life presents. One of those stressful times presented itself recently with our family. Our-7-year-old daughter, Abigayle, has been having some pretty major allergy problems recently. We took her to see our family's allergist. From that visit, we learned that most of her problems are caused by things such as pollens, weeds, etc. However, Abigayle was VERY alarmed when she was told that bloodwork would be necessary to rule out food allergies. Our allergist was very understanding and said that it would be just fine if the blood be drawn at our local hospital where Abi is familiar with the lab technicians.

A week ago, Leighlyn and I accompanied Abigayle to the hospital. Abigayle was totally dreading the experience ahead of her. Unfortunately, two lab techs did everything that they could possibly do to find her little tiny bloodveins to no avail. They had her lie on the x-ray table so that she would be more comfortable and could stretch her arms out easily. They were so kind and considerate of her. But, after an hour, no blood was found. They decided that we should give up for the day and come back later to try it again. By the time that we left, Abigayle was just devastated especially knowing that a return trip would be necesary.

As you know, Abigayle was extremely ill last week so we did not take her back in until today. This time, we were prepared. Abi brought her Barry the Bear. Leighlyn brought along 3 of Abi's favorite storybooks. We thought that the more we did to take Abi's mind off of the search for veins, the better off everyone would be.

The techs who were working today were Diane Nickelson and Martha Vallejo. They are so good! I think that they could probably find blood in a dried up russet potato if they needed to. They were the people who did their darnedest to find Abi's vein last week. If the truth were known, they were probably dreading what they had to do to Abigayle just as much as Abigayle was dreading it.

It brings tears to my eyes when I think of what all our techs had done to prepare for Abigayle today. They are always so very busy with their day-to-day work but yesterday was especially busy. They had two techs on duty and many more patients than normal because of all of the illnesses that are plaguing our little town's inhabitants right now. Even though that was the case, it did not stop them from trying to figure out what could be done to relieve a little girl's stresses when she came back in for her bloodwork. For those of you who do not know, Terry Laws is one of the newest techs in our lab. He fits the criteria for being on this particular team perfectly. He is very kind, thoughtful and dedicated to do the best job that can be done to provide doctors with the prompt and accurate results that are necessary so that the doctors can provide top quality care to patients.

Terry and Diane actually decorated the x-ray lab just for Abigayle! They were prepared to perform a puppet show for her so that she would be able to relax and actually find some joy in her visit to the hospital! Where else would people be that considerate and thoughtful in these same circumstances??? Large city hospital technicians probably wouldn't have even thought about it. I thank God for these special people at our hospital. Our nearest Wal-Mart may be an hour away but I thank God for letting me be a small part of such a WONDERFUL and loving community!!!

Question about Route 96--

Yes, they will be open all 7 days a week. I haven't heard anything about major holidays. As far as I am concerned, I hope that they are CLOSED on Christmas, Easter, Thanksgiving. Those are days when no one should have to work unless they choose healthcare careers.

A great H1N1 (Swine Flu) Website

I am very happy to say that one of our readers from Italy has sent me a new website that contains ALOT of information that we can use. She is a doctor. She admits that some of the information will be a little tough for some of us to get through but there is still plenty of information for everyone to learn from.

http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/genomes/FLU/SwineFlu.html

There is much information included on this website that most of us have never known about. We could help ourselves, our families, our friends and our neighbors by reading and sharing it.

In health,

Update

A few days ago, I wrote in my blog about how terribly ill our whole family was. I was t-totally convinced that we had just lived through the H1N1. Since then, our family is feeling much better. We're still really tired by nightfall and have to take more breaks during the day but we're getting much better. Stan is going to work, I returned to my office cleaning job yesterday, Abigayle has been back to school all week. But, Leighlyn has not been able to return to school since last Friday. She feels just as good as we do but, her temp goes up every night and she still has a cough. Until kids have a normal temperature and have not used any drugs to keep it normal for 24 hours, they cannot return to school. As long as someone has a temp, they can pass whatever junk they have on to others. She still has that dog-gone cough! I think that part of it is due to her seasonal allergies.

Last weekend, I was POSITIVE that we had been swined. In the past few days, I have begun to think otherwise about that. For one thing, we are recovering quicker, I think, than most of the H1N1 patients probably are. For another thing, I have learned that in Garden City where H1N1 has been confirmed, that most if not all of those people started off with TERRIBLE breathing problems so severe that arterial blood gases had to be taken to measure just how much oxygen concentration was actually in the blood. Now, that's scary! Then, after all of that, comes the other symptoms most associated with seasonal flu such as vomiting, diarhea, etc., etc.

I still believe that the flu that we had last weekend was worse than any that we have ever had. There were times when I believed that I was going to die. I mean that literally. I spoke with a lady in the health profession yesterday. She described it as people saying that it was terrifically violent. VIOLENT!!! That is the best way that I can describe it.

I would advice everyone to stock up on any and all of the medicines that you usually use to fight fever. (Remember that when fever is high, it is great to alternate the Tylenol with the ibuprofen so that the temp can be lowered quicker.)

Have cold and cough medication on hand.

Have at least a 5-day EXTRA supply of food on hand so that you do not have to leave the house to buy groceries when you are ill. Have the ingredients for the B.R.A.T. diet on hand. That is bananas, rice, applesauce and bread for toast. I recommend the instant rice because it cooks quicker. When you are coming out of the horrific sickness of this, the last thing that you feel like doing is having to stand up for long periods of time to cook, etc.

When the vomiting begins, pull small empty trash cans close to you. (I would definitely recommend that you leave the plastic trashbag in it.) When this junk hits, you don't always have time to get to the bathroom.

Personally, I appreciated having Lysol Disinfecting Spray on hand. To me, I at least felt like the house was fresher and abit more sanitary.

Have kleenexes and PLENTY of toilet tissue handy.

Have Clorox ready to go to work. The only Clorox that actually kills germs is the original WITHOUT the addition of scent such as the floral version. Check out the bottles' labels if you do not believe me on this one.

Have disinfecting cleansers on hand for when you begin to feel better, you can begin to de-germ your house.

Probably most importantly, DO NOT let anyone return to school, to work, to the public in general until his/her temperature has been normal for at least 24 hours without needing to take drugs to keep it normal!!! If you don't want this virus, chances are that no one else wants it either.

Stay well!!!

Update on early Saturday's car accident

I FINALLY got some information on the car accident on Saturday. The cause of the one-car accident appears to have been the ice. The driver was a woman from Dighton who works at Caprock. I don't know what her name is. Her car was totalled but she survived with a broken collar bone. So very fortunate!!!

Wanted: small breed puppy or dog

Some friends of ours who live in Scott City are in the market for a small-breed puppy. They live in an apartment and the rules stipulate that they not have any pets that weigh more than 16 pounds. This dog would be well-taken care and loved. The couple has no children living at home with them. They would make sure that the dog would live indoors with them and would be vaccinated, spayed/neutered.

Us

After what our daughters, my husband and I just lived through since Thursday, I am CONVINCED that H1N1 (Swine Flu) has arrivd and is thriving in Wichita County.

Abigayle started the cycle here. She was sicker than a dog-gone dog for 2 1/2 days. On Friday morning, I was hit was nausea but nothing else at the time. With everything that poor Abi went through, she never had diarrhea or fever. She complained of the worst headache that she had ever had. It was located at the back of her head and neck. The worst part was her vomiting, over and over and...

Leighlyn had complained of a sore throat on Thursday and Friday. Since she had no other symptoms, we all decided that she was having problems with her allergies. So, guess what? We sent her to SCHOOL!!! Late Friday evening, her cycle of vomiting struck. Shortly after that, she had a fever. Fortunately, cycles of Ibuprofen and Tylenol, handled it well. Yesterday, Saturday, she had no other symptoms except for a low-grade fever in the morning that went away and feeling totally exhausted. All that she could do ws lie around and sleep.

Stan and I woke up yesterday morning feeling just fine. Because of the ice outside, we decided that we would make chili and let it cook all day. Abigayle was also looking forward to the chili. Leighlyn did not think that she was up to anything spicy which was quite understandable to us. So she was to have chicken noodle soup. Abigayle and I enjoyed the chili. Stan never ate a spoonful.

That was because at about 5:00 that evening, Stan's very own vomiting began. It lasted throughout the next 8 hours. He also had a low-grade fever which Ibuprofen and Tylenol contained. At about midnight, I became horribly nauseated. By 1:00 a.m., I did nothing but ATTEMPT TO RUN back and forth to the bathroom. Keep in mind, that we have a bathroom in our bedroom as well as right across the hall from our bedroom. By the mid-cycle, neither was close enough for me. I lied on our bathroom floor for awhile for convenience sake and the fact that I was too weak to go back to bed. In my case, diarrhea and vomiting alternated. I would do nothing but those two things over and over again in a 15-minute time span. (Poor Abi, threw up 12 times over two hours.) In our main bathroom, we have a tall rattan set of shelves where we keep our rolled up towels, wash clothes, hand towels, baskets, etc. Finally, I pulled myself off of the floor and laid my head across one of the shelves until I felt steadier on my feet at which point, I slowly made my way back to bed. Extreme nausea hit again. Stan sleeps on the side of the bed closer to our master bath. He went and got me our trash can from it and brought it to me. For the next couple of hours, I was constantly pushing myself out of bed to pick up the trash can, use it, lie back down, rest for 10-30 minutes and then start the process all over again. I learned that I have muscles that I was never aware of in my stomach area. Boy, do they hurt from the work-out of last night! Thank the good Lord, my vomiting has ceased now. At 6:30 this morning, I finally went to sleep for the first time since Saturday morning. I woke back up at 11:30 this morning. I had a fever early this morning. I took Ibuprofen and it is back to normal now.

Stan and I are feeling much better than we were but we are not up-to-par yet. Our main complaint is being so very, VERY weak and having the inability to feel like doing anything. I hope and pray that our family can become healthy again soon. The four of us don't think that we have ever been so sick in our lives! There is only one time that I can remember being so weak. That was right after my open-heart surgery.

Today, everyone of us will be going on the B.R.A.T. diet. (Bananas, rice, applesauce and toast.) Thank goodness, we have a refrigerator with ice and water in the door! It will be getting a major work-out as we replinish our bodies with water.

Once I am stronger, our house is going to get a major cleaning with Lysol detergent and disinfectant spray. All of our bedding including our throws that we use in our living and family rooms, will be washed in HOT water. On Thursday, I hung a sign on our front door that said that the flu had arrived here and that we did not think that it was a good deal that company come in to call. It will remain in place today and maybe tomorrow until we feel that we have killed ALOT of the germs here.

For awhile, I was using disinfecting cleansers all of the time to clean our house. I thought that by doing so, our family would be good and healthy. I wasn't the only homemaker doing that. Then, information was released by medical authorites that this was NOT a good deal. In order for our bodies to build up immunity to viruses, etc., we need to be exposed to them. Otherwise, when something serious comes along, our immune systems cannot fight them off. You probably already knew that but just in case.........

Today, I am going to contact our elderly loved ones and warn them to be careful of this junk. Even though the medical professionals do not think that senior citizens have to be alarmed by this virus, I feel better letting them know that I HONESTLY BELIEVE that that is what we had. The professionals also say that this virus is changing all of the time, so I THINK that everyone needs to be careful.

So far, no one seems to know when the H1N1 vaccine will be here. We WILL definitely be getting it as soon as it arrives. I DON'T EVER WANT MY FAMILY TO BE THAT SICK AGAIN!!! The first round of Wichita County's seasonal flu vaccine is already gone now. We didn't even know hat it had arrived! Once the second batch gets here, we'll be getting it as well.

NO, I cannot say with any certainty that this was H1N1 and we probably never will know because the State is no longer running tests for it. (I think that maybe they think if there is no more testing, the hysteria will not be so great.) I dunno.

Do yourself and everyone else a favor, if you think that you may be sick with anything contagious, STAY HOME!!! NO ONE ELSE WANTS IT!!!

I'll be praying that this virus does not affect as many people as the authorities are concerned about. I don't want ANYONE to go through what we just have...

In God We Trust.

Chili--Mmmm, good!!!

On cold winter days, many of us enjoy pots of chili, chili burgers or chili dogs. Here's a great recipe to try! I've never seen one quite like this...

1 c. chopped fresh onion or 4T. dried onion

12 ounces tomato paste or sauce

8 c. water

6 Tablespoons chili powder

1 1/2 teaspoons salt

1 teaspoon garlic powder

1 teaspoon sugar

3/4 teaspoon of Tobasco pepper sauce (OPTIONAL)

shredded cheddar cheese for topping chili (OPTIONAL)

1. Brown meat with onion until fully cooked.

2. Place cooked meat and all other ingredients EXCEPT for cheese into a large crockpot. Mix well.

3. Cover and cook on LOW for 7-9 hours.

4. Top chili with cheese if desired.

Serves 8-12.

Sorry that I am just now getting this posted! The girls and I have been very sick since Thursday. This flu is TERRIBLE!!!

Susan sent out an email yesterday to update us on Dennis. To top everything else that Dennis has been going through, he now has a KIDNEY STONE!!! He has been having problems with it since Sunday and has not passed it as of yeterday.

His coughing is still painful and frequent so he is not getting much sleep. Part of the pain is new so Dennis will be speaking with his doctor.

They are loving the mail that they are receiving!

PLEASE keep Dennis and Susan in your prayers!

Record Breaking Temperatures in Wichita County

Today, Saturday, we are experiencing an ice storm. This is the earliest ice storm that I can recall since my birthday on October 29th, 1979. That's 30 years!!! More ice and snow are expected throughout the whole weekend!

As a result of the ice, there was a car accident on the bridge by Caprock, north of town during the night. Since then, people are falling all over the place. Think it might be a good time to stay at home???

Radios were reporting yesterday that the temperatures for Autumn in this part of the country have been breaking many, MANY records. Autumn has not been this cold since the 20th century!!!

Flu is here.

Our daughter, Abigayle, has probably been sicker that I have ever seen her.

She started out with allergy problems originally. Phlegm ran down the back of her throat, pooled and then eventually, she threw it up. This had happened a few times on Wedneday and Thursday. Then, late Thursday afternoon, horrible stomach pain hit followed by LOTS of vomiting. In a 2-hour time span, she threw up 12 times!!! I don't think that I have ever heard of anyone else ever doing that!

I called our local hospital to get advice for her. Since this stuff is running rampant right now, I thought that you might appreciate the information.

1. First of all, call your doctor BEFORE you go to the clinic or the hospital. No one wants you to catch something else from those two locations.

2. Whenever you have vomiting or diarrhea, your body is losing much needed fluids therefore, you can become dehydrated. It is not that necessary to eat anything unless you are hungry. If that is the case, remember the B.R.A.T. diet. It consists of bananas, rice, applesauce and toast. Don't gorge yourself on anything including water. If you do, everything will probably come right back up. When it comes to fluid intake, avoid sugary drinks. Much fruit juice has sugar. Pediacare and water are great. Soda is fine if the bubbles are gone when you drink it. However, Dr. Werner, a much loved and respected doctor in Tribune, always recommended Coke and 7up. There was some ingredient in the coke syrup that helped.

3. At times like this, we sometimes feel like we cannot get enough water in us. It is a definite mistake to just start gulping fluids because they will more-than-likely, come back up. Instead, drink about 1/4 cup. Stop. About 30 minutes later, drink another 1/4 cup. Repeat over and over. That way, you stand a better chance of the fluid actually getting to be absorbed into your body.

4. Another good thing to do is to suck on ice cubes. The ice is dissolved and then is slowly absorbed by the body.

5. Believe it or not, but Abigayle has never had a fever with this junk. However, if a fever is present, take the person to the emergency right away if the temperature gets to 100.5 or 101 and won't come down.

6. Ibuprofen is better than Tylenol for pulling temperatures down quickly. The two can be alternated. Check with your doctor to see how you do that. I THINK that you can alernate them every 2 or 3 hours. DO NOT TAKE MY WORD FOR GRANTED ON THIS!!! Many of us cannot take ibuprofen if we are on other prescription drugs. For example, I cannot because I have to take blood thinners because of my mechanical heart valve. Check into it!

7. Aspirin should NEVER be given to children. Some doctors do not recommend it to adults either when they hare viral infections. Again, check with your doctor. I cannot take aspirin either because of my blood thinners. So, check it out.

No one should return to school or work until they have been fever-free and have not vomited for at least 24 hours. If you must have something from downtown, etc., ask a relative or friend to get it for you. Otherwise, the chances of you passing it to others is VERY possible.

I do not pretend to be a medical professional so if you have any concerns/questions, it is always best to contact the REAL medical authorities!!! Good news! The hospital is always open 24 hours a day!

Ron Blau--10/05/09

Several of you have asked about Ron. Today, Abigayle had an apointment with her allergist in Hays. Pam was ill today but Ron and Chelsee met us for a great lunch and fellowship. We really enjoyed it! (By the way, Chelsee is now engaged! Yay!!! She is engaged to a young police officer who works in Russell. They are considering getting married in a year or so. Chelsee is living at the Fort Hays University dorm and is in her final year there. She is studying to become a teacher for little tiny guys! Any of you who remember our Chelsee, know that with her special, sparkling personality, she will be a great teacher and mentor!!!)

Ron is not able to return to work as of right now. He is undergoing radiation and is taking a chemotherapy pill once a day. At this time, his facial skin has been burned by the radiation. He laughs because he says that it looks like he has a farmer's tan! As you can tell by that, his spirit is very good. Thank the good Lord!

Pam is not able to work right now either because of her own traumatic health issues that she is facing right now. Her education as a nurse has really helped Ron. She is continuing her college education studies at home.

Please pray for Ron, Pam, Josh and Chelsee! They would love to hear from their relatives and family! If you don't already have their home address, please let me know and I will give it to you!!

Dennis and Susan Elder--10/05/09

Susan sent out an email this morning filled with great news!

They have now been at their lakehouse for a week! Dennis and Susan are really enjoying being together at home! Today, he was taking a nap outside while the temperature was cool. Susan was enjoying watching hummingbirds as she wrote the email. Can you imagine how much better that environment is versus in a hospital room somewhere???

Dennis' cough has improved considerably but we still need to pray for the cough to completely cease. His pain is a constant but the edge has been taken off and it is controlled now with the new pain meds that are focused on his nerve endings. Praise the Lord!!!

He is eating very well now and is now asking for foods he hasn't wanted in a long time.

Dennis and Susan want everyone to know that they so appreciate all of the birthday cards, get well cards, letters, phone calls, texts, visits, etc. Susan wishes that we could all see the great joy and happiness that Dennis has now that he knows how much all of us love him! By the way, the previously returned mail is now getting to Dennis and Susan. (Why, oh why...do we wait until someone is so ill before we take out the time to let them know that we love and care for them??? No one is guaranteed tomorrow so it is vitally important that we express our love TODAY!!!!!!!!!!!)

Dennis' birthday was very good! Some friends took them out to eat. It was so nice to be out and about for them!

Susan is very thankful that God blessed her with the strength that she has needed for all of this. (Personally, I cannot imagine any better cheerleader for Dennis than Susan! She's a real doll! God has really blessed all of us by bringing Susan into our lives!!!)

Please continue to pray for Dennis and Susan and showing your love and support through the following up and down days as he recovers from the traumatic illness and surgery ahead of him.

Want to buy

A family in Leoti has a real need for a used sleeper sofa or a couch-hide-away. If you have one for sale, please leave a comment after this entry or call me at 375-4584 or 376-8922. The family owns a pick-up so I think that they would be happy to drive to you and pick up your sofa.

If you have ever spent much time driving around your local junkyard, you know that you don't have to drive very far to find furniture, etc. that is still in good shape. Instead of attempting to sale or give these things away, the owners hauled them to the dump instead. That is one of the reasons that our dumps are filling up way too quickly and UNNECESARILY.

I am always reminded of the saying, "One man's junk is another man's treasure."
