Its ON!!!!!

Stan drove me to Hays this morning to meet with my neurologist.  It was determined that my healing has been wonderful so I could have my device turned on which means that the magnets could begin transmitting.  I admit that I was scared at first.  My doctor had explained to me that it would not be a painful experience but that I would have a multitude of other sensations.  She was right.

The generator is installed in my upper left handed portion of my chest.  Wires run from it to my neck where they have been wound around my Vegas Nerve.  Once the device was turned on today.  I felt a feeling of something in my throat.  At first, I was concerned that I might choke.  I never did.  My neurologist was quite impressed with how well I was taking pulses.  As a matter-of-fact, she was shocked by it.  She gave me the option to "shock" my generator with the magnet that I now where on my wrist.  I thought it would be a good deal to do it in her office so she could talk me through it.  Again, I felt nothing.  Again, my doctor was stumped.  She began to raise the amount of voltage.  Eventually, it was high enough for me to feel the extra stimulation.  And, BOY, did I feel it!  LOL!!  It was not a painful ensation but definitely not anything I would enjoy.  Ha!  Ha!  That is the pulse I will feel anytime my magnets are used to abort a seizure.  That pulse lasts for a full minute--a minute that eems to be endless but once it's over, its gone.  (The regular and automatic pulses just last for 7 seconds each.)

My doctors are happy that I am able to have my wattage already set at 25%.  It is a good start.  I will return in April to have the voltage increased even more.  As minutes and hours have passed today, I am noticing that I barely notice the sensation now.  Fantastic!!!  I was concerned that there might be a constant buzzing or pain.  Nada.  Thank You, Lord!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

From Hays, we drove to Russell where I met my surgeon in an outreach clinic.  He was quite impressed with how both incisions had healed.  He had had one of our local doctors remove the stitches from my neck last Thursday.  The stitches in my chest and underarm needed to remain in place for a few days longer.  They were ready to be taken out today. The swelling in my neck is still there but it is much better.  Soon, it will be completely gone.  I am noticing a lot less numbness in my neck also. I am doing so well now, that he should not need to see me again until I need new batteries installed which hopefullly will be in 8 years or so.

I am happy to tell you that my last seizure was just before I was wheeled into the operating room on February 17th.  That is a great stretch of time in my case.  My neurologist believes that she will begin to take me off of my older seizure medicine very soon.  Wonderful!!!  It makes me very sleepy 24 hours a day.  My new med does not.  I complained of extra fatigue.  My doctor told me that my mechanical heart valve not woking right right now, is responsible for that.  For now, I will continue to take afternoon naps as needed.

Today is a day I will never forget anytime soon.  After almost 32 years, I am on the road to a new and much healthier life.  My family and I are excited about that.  What's next?  The automatic waves of powerful stimulation will continue to heal my brain as time goes on.  This is NOT a cure all but it is an awesome treatment which I believe brings epileptics aound the world a big step closer to a cure--possibly in our own lifetimes.  My depression should be completely gone by the end of August.

One funny thing that happened thi afternoon is this.  After both appointments were behind us, we drove to a restaurant in Hays for lunch.  While the waitress wa taking our order, I noticed that, all of a sudden, my arm was heavy and felt like it was stuck to the table.  When I looked at my arm, I discovered that all of my silverware was stuck to my arm magnet!  I was not expecting that.  The waitress was a bit shocked also.  Ha!  Most waiters and waitesses never see something like that.  LOL!!!

Again, my family and I want to thank all of you who have been praying for my recovery.  Without your prayers, love, support and God, I would not be doing this well.

Monday, February 27th

This post-surgery time has really proven something to me--I'm not nearly as tough as I once thought I was.  LOL!  Surgery was done on Friday, February 17th.  This is now the 10th day.  Until Friday, I was beginning to wonder if I'd ever come out of the surgical effects.  Friday and Saturday were better but yesterday was by far the best day since surgery.  Thank You, Lord and everyone who have been praying for my family and I!!!  I managed to actually do laundry and a variety of other household cleaning chores that I have not been able to do for so long now.  Thank goodness, I have a husband and two daughters who are always so willing to help!

I know that my heart surgery was no picnic but I have learned that this surgery is much tougher than I had expected.  The important thing is that it is now 10 days behind me.  The first set of stitches from my neck were removed last week.  Healing was great.  Tomorrow morning, Stan will take me to Hays where my neurologist will turn the electricity on to my device.  We came to find that it was best to let the healing get finished before the transmission of electricity was allowed to begin.  The major pain, etc is now out of the way and now we can get the show on the road.  Stitches from my breast and underarm area will be removed after the electric charges have begun tomorrow.  Before long, this surgery will be doing just what it was supposed to do--stopping more of my seizures and promoting the total removal of my long-lasting depression.  God, I can hardly wait for that!!!

As for my seisures, I am happy to say that the last daytime seizure that I had was on the way to the operating room.  None since then.  How do I explain the multitude of them during the last couple of weeks before surgery?  The stress. I was nervous and excited about the operation.  Nothing from the surgery is responsible for this improvement yet.  God, your prayers and my loving family and friends are responsible for me getting this far.  Thank you!!!

Since surgery, I have discovered that many more people care about me than I had known before.  Because of that, the pain that I have felt from the loss of the two couples of friends we once were so close to, has begun to heal.  It still bothers me how they dropped their support for me when I probably needed it the most.  I may not ever understand why they felt that they could not continue to be our friends but, life goes on.

I am a bit nervous about the beginning of the electricity tomorrow but I know that this is what God had planned on for me all along.  I choose to follow Him and He will not lead me astray...

A One and a Two and a Three...

That's the countdown I feel that my family and I have been through the past few months.  The never-ending depression.  The traumatic surgery and post surgery.  THEN we met with cardiologist yesterday morning.  Earlier this month, several tests were performed on me.  I thought that I would receive a clean bill of cardiac health yesterday.  Part of that was true.  Doc was very impressed with how I endured the stress test.  He was surprised at that outcome.  Thats where the good news ended and the bad news began.

On May 23rd, 2002, I had open heart surgery.  A mechanical heart valve was placed into my heart.  Without it, I would have died...soon there after.  At that time, we were told to expect the new valve to last for the next 15 to 30 years.  Maybe even longer.  Given the fact that surgery took so much out of me for the next year, I was relieved that it would not have to be redone anytime too soon.  At the earliest, we were not expecting new valve surgery until AT LEAST 2017.  This is barely 2012.  Tests showed that my new valve is no longer closing like it needs to.  What now?  We return to the cardiologist in 5 months.  Until then, instead of checking my pro time every month, I now have to have it checked every 2 weeks.  When we return in the Spring, we will determine if we can put surgery off for awhile longer or not.

Please keep my family and me in your prayers.  Thank you!

Good Morning, Sunshine!

Actually, I awakened before 5:00 thi morning o I don't even know if sunshine i in our forecast  I am referring to how much better I feel today than I have for the past 4 day.

Now I don't know why I expected to have surgery, pep off of the gurney, go to Wal-Mart, enjoy a dinne of celebration and come home.  Whatever made me thing that was totally WRONG.  Surgery started out on a wrrong foot.  Just as we were leaving the pre-surgery room, a seizure struck.  Though it only lasted for a few minutes, recovery time wa also necessary.  All that I am able to remember today was feeling panicky and then awakening several hours later in pain.  Surgery ended up taking almot 3 times as long as had been predicted.  I don't know why.  Hours later when I did wake up, I felt as weak as a newly born kitten.  Moving a toe was a hardship for this 50-year-old body.  Nursing staff did their best to wake me.  Finally, the big guns were called in...Stan, my sister, Lori, and my mother.  I remember thinking that I needed an open bottle of ammonia to clear the fogginess from my mind.  My girls came in first but they couldn't handle seeing me so unresponsive so they were sent back to the waiting room where Grandma and Lars were waiting.    With the high-powered cheering andd support from the other three in my room, after a while I began to realize that I wa still alive and needed to act appropriately.  LOL!!!

Getting dressed was unbelievably difficult.  We soon decided not to dress me in my bra.  I was simply not up to that.  My family put a loose-fitting top and jeans on.  Finally, I was taken by wheelchair to the entrance of the hospital while we awaited Stan's return with the van.  We loaded up.  Grandma, Mama, Lori and Lars got into their van and we headed homewards.  We pulled up to a drive-in restuarant to pick up most everyone.s dinner except for mine.  I just had to sleep.  Somewhere between Hays and Oakley, my bladder was busting o we pulled over a rest area.  Soon we were back en route home.

My neck hurt badly.  My chest hurt badly.  I was exhausted.  I was seriously nauseated.  Once at home, Stan and the girls prepped me for bed.  I went right to sleep.  Somewhere dring the night, pain worsened.  Stan fetched more of the pain medication that the doctor had prescibed.  He sent 30 of the pills.  As soon as I knew that, I knew that I was in for some major hurting.  My insticts were right.  I hurt all day.  I hurt all night for the next couple of day.  Part of my day was spent sleeping in our recliner.  I was too sick to keep my eyes open but at least, I could be with my family.  I was in bed before my usual bedtime of 9L00.  I slept into just a bit before lunch both days.  I had to wake up early on Monday so that we could be to my cardiologist's appointment in Dodge City before 10:30.  Tough.  I don't know if the bad news he gave me caued me to rally or what but something clicked in.  Eventually, I was able to keep both of my eyes opened at the same time.  Thank goodness for Wal-Mart's scooters!!!

We were back home shortly after 5:00 but this time, I was able to stay up until a little after 8:00.  This morning, I was awake at 5:00.  Great start.  I didn't have the head-spitting pain that I had endured the two previou night's.  How refreshing!

Now onto the surgery itself.  Basically, the electricial (surgeon) came in, plumbed my neck and chest for electricity.  Cloed up both sites and abandoned the job.  Come to find out that is how this procedure is done.  I only had the batteries turned on for a few minutes to make sure all was ready to work.  Then the batteries were turned off.  Why, you might be asking.  I need to heal before the electricity can be started and remain in ON position.  The electrician (my neurologist) will see me later this month.  If he believes that I am adequately healed, she will use her wand to start the electricity.  Evey week or two after that for awhile, we will return to her to make adjustments to the power until we are where we need to be.  Until late yesterday, I was not convinced that we had made the right decision afterall.  Now, I know that we did.  I'll keep you updated on my progess and pitfalls along the way.  In the meantime, PLEASE know how much my family and I have appreciated the spport of the people who have offered it!!!  We have a long way to go, my friends.  I hope you'll stick with me the rest of the way.  It was quite hurtful when two of our closest couple of friends deserted me before we even got started.  I cannot afford any more desertians now...please.

Ducks in Their Row

We met with the surgeon this morning.  All systems are GO.  Surgery was moved to 8:15 tomorrow (Friday) morning.  Can't wait to start my N-E-W life.  I thank the Lord for guiding me to this point in my life!  I pray that after this, I will touch many lives and show them that there really IS life after epilepsy and depression.  I know that that is God's current plan for me.  As a matter-of-fact, he led me to an epileptic just today who has never heard of this surgery.  She, now, plans on checking into it more thoroughly.  Amen.

I'll keep you updated on how everything goes.

Worse Than My Moo Moo

You already know that my life has been less than great for quite sometime now.  The brain damage and the depression that it has cased has practically been too much to handle at times.  Without going into great detail about the negatives, let me go on to the positive that I am sooo excited abot.  This is Tuesday morning.  On Friday morning, my surgery will finally be done.  This is the surgery, VNS, that should be the answer that we've been looking for for the past 31 years.  It will go right to work on the damage from past seizures, the depression that it has caused AND will do wonders for my future seizures.  In case you're just signing in, allow me to explain.  A new surgery was developedd in the past few years that works along the same concept as a heart's pace maker.  The pacemaker sends electricity to the heart that keeps the heart muscle beating at a normal speed.  (Now don't take my word for granted on that.  I've never done research on that topic.  I just ASSUME that that is how it works.)  In the cse of VNS, a disc that is about the same size as a half dollar is mounted under my skin in the upper left side of my chest.  From it is a wire that the doctor will thread up to my Left Vagus Nerve which is located in my neck.  Once the wire reaches that point, it will be wrapped tightly around the nerve.

Once there, the disc transmits electricity to the nerve and then on to the brain.  The batteries continue to support the disc to send electricity to the brain on a regular basis and provide extra power to the brain in cases of emergency.  They will need to be replaced surgically every 3-8 years.  Not bad.

This will abort many future seizures or at least minimize them and the necessary recovery time afterwards.  The constant rhythem that is produced will help to heal the already damaged brain and prevent more damage from being done.  THIS IS NOT A CURE FOR EPILEPSY!!!..  I want you to understand that.  But it is probably the best treatment for epileptics since the beginning of time.  PLUS, it will work to remove the depression that my seizures have caused over time.  Most epileptics will have to continue taking anti-seizure medications for the rest of their lives but might be able to take lesser amounts than before.  In my case, my seizures have become so much worse over the past year, that a second drug had to be added to help my other drug that has worked so well for me over the past 8 or 9 years.  Even so, I still had two bad seizures on Sunday afternoon.  And each of those seizures produced more brain damage.  This surgery will help to prevent that from happening from now on.  Thank the Good Lord!

So, I had a long list of pre-operative tests that needed to be done this week.  Stan and Abigayle took me to the hospital yesterday afternoon.  Thats when my embarrassment came to pass.  Two of my tests were chest -rays and an EKG.  I don't know if all patients having this surgery have to take them or not.  I had to for sure because of my heart issues.  So I am taken to the X-Ray room and instructed to remove my shirt and bra.  Everything else could remain on.  Before I took these off, the technician asked me if I wanted the thing that went over me.  I ASSUMED that she was referring to a hospital gown.  I thought that they must have to go elsewhere in the hospital to get one.  Not wanting her to have to do that, I told her I would be fine without it.  When I had my heart surgery in 2002, so many tests had to be done on me over and over and over again, I basically lost most, if not all, of my modesty.  LOL!  Besides that, I would be in a dark room anyway.  No big deal.

So anyway, I disrobe and begin walking to the upright x-ray machine.  All of a sudden, the technician came running in out of nowhere and told me that I needed a gown because other people in the hospital could see me.  I had TOTALLY forgotten the window in the wall that seperates the room from the x-ray lab!  Stupid me!!!  Thanks to the x-ray tech, I soon donned the ever-stylish hospital gown and prevented anyone else from going blind.  LOL!!!  I cannot tell you just how embarrassed I was and still am.

After the x-rays were done, I had to go to the emergency room where my EKG would be done.  The tech made sure that I had a blanket covering my backside as I made that trek down the hallway.  Again, thank goodness!  LOL!!!  That test was then completed.  All I needed to do before I could go home last nght was to have two more shots given to me in my stomach area.  (Because of my upcoming surgery, I had to go off of my blood thinnerss on Saturday.  I willl now take injections every day until surgery to keep my blood thinned but not too thin for surgery.  I sure don't want to bleed to death!  LOL!!!

I returned to the hospital this morning for the rest of the tests.  Most of these were done with just a few tubes of blood.  The last test involved a blood pressure cuff pumped to just 40 pounds, a razor blade, a timer and a round piece of paper.  Two technicians are required for this.  The razor blade was required to cut a very small incision in my forearm.  A timer was used to see how long it took for my blood to clot.  The paper was dipped into the blood every 30 seconds.  Once the blood no longer appears on the white part of the paper, the blood has clotted and the test is over.  The normal range for this completion is approximately 4-11 minutes.  In my case, it just took over 5 minutes so all is good.  All tests have now been completed and the results will be phoned in to me and faxed to the surgeon very soon.   The only test results I am concerned about are my cholesterol and blood sugar.   They have not been done for a few years.  There were no problems with either of them the last time.
The path should now be clear for me to getting into surgery.  I am happy to say that I did not embarrass myself this morning.  I was able to keep all of my clothing in place.  Ha!  Ha!

I would like to ask you for one favor, if I might.  Please pray for me.  I have complete faith in God that this surgery is exactly what He has had in mind for me since before I was ever born.  This epilepsy and it's consequent depression has not only being a tough and long haul for me, it has been the same for my family and friends.  Most of my family has endured this with me throughoutt the past 3 decades plus.  Unfortunately, some of my friends have not.  Those who deserted me couldn't handle the embarrassment that I had caused them.  I hate that.  I never intended for them to feel like that.  As a result of what I've become, I spend most of my time at home where I feel sheltered and safe.  I learned recently that the following traits are totally normal for people who have been through what I have:

1.  No longer doing most of the shopping that I formerly did and enjoyed, I might add.  Stan and the girls do that now.

2.  I do very little cooking these days.  Stan does the rest of it unless he is too tired.  At that point, we order in our meal.

3.  Once upon a time, I kept my house about as clean as they come.  I am sorry that I cannot say that today.  My mind does not track as well which causes me to have problems getting things as simple as housework and laundry done daily.  Very rarely do I get both the housework and laundry done on the same day.  And by the end of the day, I am totally exhausted even though I probably did not succeed in getting everything done.  Totally frustrating, to see the very least.

There is one other common trait that I don't usually have a problem with.  I still go to a restaurant to eat with the rest of my family.  Most epileptics who have reached the point where I am now, do not.

So, though life is uneasy for me right now, I believe that the uneasiness is coming to an end.  Friday will be the beginning of my new life.  Soon, I will not be afraid of embarrassing my close family, friends and myself with any public seizure activity.  Consequently, I will be able to return to church.  (I stopped going to church a couple of years ago after having one seizure in church and another seizure later on in in adult Sunday School.)  I will be able to present my house and clean laundry like they should be.  I'll also start cooking like I once did.  (My family may not always appreciate that though.  LOL!!!)

If you or someone you know has epilepsy, I strongly urge you to consult your neurologist to see if you are a candidate for VNS.  Not all types of epilepsy respond to this surgery.  Your neurologist can tell just by reading your EEG usually.  Some health insurance companies do not pay for this treatment as it is very expensive.  My insurance company went clear through my history and quickly came to the conclusion that this was the best option for me.   I am soooo thankful for that!

In regards to my blog, you can clearly see that I have not deserted it.  I've just been ignoring it.  My words and other though processes don't always work well with one another right now.  I have faith that they will improve over the next 3-6 months as my neurologist and other professionals have told me.  Soon, I will be returning to my frequent writing.  I've missed you.  After my surgery, I promise to update you on my progress.

I want to thank each of you who have taken time out of your busy schedules to call, stop by or email me with your concerns and/or best wishes.  Without a doubt, you have NO idea how much that has meant to me and my family.  I cannot thank you enough for your support!!!

Winter Storm Supplies

With a storm on its way to us, we need to be prepared well.  Here are a few items all of us should have on a hand.  In December, we were hit with a major blizzard.  Not all heeded the watches and warnings and ended up regretting it.

1.  Snow shovel close to your doors

2.  Plenty of ice melting product

3.  Several unburned candles and a box of matches(for power failure)

4.  Several heavy blankets (for power failure)

5.  If possible, have a gas powered generator and extra gas (for power failure).  Remember that if your town loses electricity, fuel pumps will be unable to work.

6.  Fill up your vehicles fuel tanks.

7.  If you do not own a garage for your vehicles, park them with the front tires facing the street.  That way, you will not have to look over your shoulder to get back out onto the road.  Busting through drifts of snow will be stressful enough.

8.  Stock up with plenty of food for you and your animals.

9.  If you still have a non-wireless phone system in your house, it might be a good idea to have a non-cordless phone plugged in.  Your cordless will not work in a power outage.

10.  I always make sure our trash is hauled outside to our outdoor trash cans BEFORE the storm starts.  It might be awhile before we can get back to the alley.

Using common sense is usually all it takes.

Winter Storm Watch

is now forecast for much of Kansas including us.  From what I understand, it will begin on Thursday evening and will continue through late Saturday.  From what I have read, 8-10 inches is possible north of Interstate 70 in Western Kansas with 6-10 inches possible from south of that line in this slow moving storm.  Strong winds are also in the forecast which will cause blowing and drifting snow.  There is a possibility that a lull in the storm could be possible on Friday afternoon.  It will not last long before the weather gets nasty again.  I definitely recommend that if you live in the watch areas, that you keep updated on this storm.

As many of you already know, we had a major blizzard a little over a month ago.  During that time, the girls and I had a tough time keeping our two outdoor bird feeders full.  Without us feeding them, I don't know what the birds would've eaten.  So, if at all possible, PLEASE put out food for your birds.  In Leoti, Western Hardware and Dollar General sell big bags of birdseed.  They are not very expensive and your birds will really appreciate it.

If you have outdoor animals, please make sure that they have plenty of food and water available to them.  For outdoor dogs, a dog house with plenty of bedding would be great.

And, of course, make sure that you have plenty of food available for your family and yourself.  I heard reports of people around here who had not stocked up before the storm.  I have a feeling those people won't make that mistake this time.  LOL!!

Keep an eye on the storm.
