STUCO Goes To Dodge City

This morning at 6:30, the Wichita County Junior High and Senior High student government officials loaded the activity bus and headed out for Dodge City where they attended a state STUCO meeting. Our daughter, Leighlyn, was one of those kids. She is the Vice President of the 7th grade.

After the meeting was adjourned, the students from all over boarded their buses again and went in search of FOOD! The Leoti kids went to two different nationally-known food establishments and were turned down for service bcause of the amount of other schools' students who had gotten to them first.

Finally, the bus went to the Pizza Hut in Dodge City. The sponsors went in to see if they would have room for the Leoti kids. They found out that the employees of the pizza restaurant had already torn down their lunch buffet for the day. However, they told the sponsors to bring everyone in anyway. Soon, new pizzas and pastas were available at the buffet for all to devour.

So, as for the Blau family, we are quite impressed with the courtesy of the Pizza Hut's manager. When we are in Dodge City again, we'll be eating there. Leighlyn has told us that the food was delicious!

Suggestions had been made before the decision to try Pizza Hut, to go to Garden City and eat at a restaurant there. A student on board of the bus has a capability on her cellphone to check traffic ahead. It revealed that major highway constructon layed ahead of them between D.C. and G.C. which could have slowed them down with an hour-long wait.

Western Hardware

Ever since Russ and Cathy (Marcy) Wiegers purchased the hardware and lumber stores from the Oldham family, many changes have been done. I've already told you how much they have done to add more curb appeal to their building including purchasing the lot between the hardware and the Leoti Standard. They then cleaned up that area, poured concrete, raised decorative fencing and put an awning over part of that concrete which protects the garden supplies, etc underneath it.

The interior was revamped first of all. Display shelves were shifted to other areas of the building. The check-out counter which had been located in the center of the building was moved to the front of the store. Many different items were brought in for re-sale that was not available in Wichita County before.

After all of these major renovations were completed, I thought that everything was done. I was wrong.

I went to the hardware store yesterday. I parked outside of their alley entrance as many other customers do also. As soon as I opened the doors, I heard a doorbell ring which alerted the employees that customers had entered the building from the rear. As I progressed into the building, I discovered that major building was done towards the back of the store. It has not been finished yet but it looks GREAT! The new structure is going to be the office. It is elevated a few steps so that office personnel will be able to overlook most of the building. So far, it has been sided with beadboard which has now been stained a medium dark color. It looks beautiful. Once the interior has been done, the old office will be dismantled. Larger display shelves will take it's place.

So, while you're out looking at the new school, drop in to the hardware store and take a look around. I think that you will be impressed.

Update on Wichita County Schools

Ya' know Leoti is a small town when you know that the big adventure of the day is taking a trip around the new school. When construction first began, you just needed to drive down Indian Road, which seperates the former junior high from the high school that was just built in 1971. Now, you need to completely drive around the block where the junior high and the new dome schools are located.

I told you last week that the old windows were being removed from the old gym and were being replaced with new, more efficient windows. There is no longer as much glass in that section as before. Instead, brick takes the place of some of the glass and has now been "wrapped around" the exterior walls. This work is very near completion. It looks so very nice!

There is a great deal of work being done on the other side of the building. Old windows are coming out of the junior high and new windows are taking their place.

The "castle", as the kids call it, has been stuccoed and will be ready for paint once the stucco has cured completely. The castle is actually the entrance into the new school. It is located on the west side of the building. It houses 3 doors which some of the kids think will "never do" because there is "so much traffic" with all of the grade school kids, teachers and parents. Personally, I think that it will work just greatly!

Full-length glass doors are now erected in each classroom. These are doors that will be used for exiting the class. I ASSUME that they will be used for students going out to recess and coming back from recess. It would be a great deal, as far as I am concerned. There would be fewer disturbances for the other classes.

Sheet rock has been going up for awhile now.

The new concrete parking area just to the west of the old junior high has now cured and contractors are able to park their equipment there.

All in all, it is easy for me to think that the buildings will be ready for school very soon. Classes will not be held there until the 2011-2012 school year.

Obesity and Poor Grades

I was listening to the KSN afternoon show, THE DOCTORS, today. They did a bit on helping your children get a better education and grades. The doctors said that there is a big connection between poor grades and obesity.

Scientests who have been studying the two issues have come up with one conclusion. It seems that the students who have a tendency for not-so-good grades also tend to be slightly to morbidly overweight.

Doctors are now recommending that children of all ages have more exercise. The exercise is great for battling against the weight problem PLUS, kids who get some sort of exercise before school are more alert and able to soak up the topics that are being taught to them. The kids who do not exercise are much more sluggish in school. The doctors said that any kind of exercise is great. One doctor said that his son jumps on their trampolene for 15 minutes every day before he leaves for school. Other kids get their exercise by walking from home to school.

Anyway, with the issues of obesity and poorer grades in America, maybe we all need to do whatever we can to encourage our children to exercise more. Here at home, our girls will be doing some form of exercise or another.

Spoon some of the ricotta mixture (roughly 2 Tbs.) of the mozzarella on each piece of lasagna noodle and roll up. In a 9x13-inch baking dish , place 1 C. of sauce on the bottom. HAPPY BIRTHDAY, LORI!!!!!!!!!!!!!

My dear, sweet, younger sister, Lori, is celebrating her ??th birthday today, September 28th!

My Lori should really appreciate this birthday more than any other birthday that she has ever had before. Lori has been EXTREMELY ill for the past few months. Whenever a person has gone through as much pain and illness as she has, your birthday tends to mean MUCH more to you that they ever have before!

Lori was born on September 28th of 1967. She was born in Scott City. Our parents, Pat and Donna Lou Elder, and I, who was 6 at the time, brought her home just a few days later. Shortly after that, our notorious sisterly fights began. LOL!!!

Lori has always been very intelligent, kind, generous, loving and lovable. Whenever someone is in need, Lori goes out of her way to help. Lori has a wonderful sense of humor! Even on your darkest days, Lori will find a way to not only make you smile but to laugh as well. Lori has always been a peace keeper.

In junior and senior high, she proved herself to be an amazing singer as well as an extremely talented trombone player. Because of these attributes, she was given a full scholarship to Southwest Oklahoma State University in Weatherford, Oklahoma. She remained there for several years until we discovered that Daddy was battling cancer which ultimately was lost to defeat. Lori came right home as soon as Daddy received his diagnosis and moved back into their home to do whatever she could to help Daddy. Daddy wanted and needed her support tremendously. We all needed her.

It was during that time that she met and fell head over heels in love with Mr. Leif Christensen. Leif had left his home country of Denmark in 1981 and had come to the United States. Within a few months of their courtship, Leif and Lori were married.

We lost Daddy on April 29th of 1995. A few days later, a laboratory test confirmed that Lori was expecting a baby. Unfortunately, Daddy never got to know that his grandson was on his way. Lori gave birth to her son, Lars, on December 5th of 1995. Lars has been the sunshine of his Mama's life ever since.

Today, Lori is a stay-at-home mom who homeschools her son, takes care of family and home and is also a very dedicated member of the Leoti City Council. When I said "takes care of her family", I don't just mean Leif and Lars. I mean she helps her stepchildren who mean the world to her, her grandchildren, her mother, sisters, nephews, nieces, etc.

Lori is a totally outstanding and selfless person. If you never get to know Lori on a personal level, you're really missing out on someone who is as special as they get...

This coming Saturday, several of our dearest people will be coming together at our house to celebrate Lori's big day as well as our daughter-in-laws birthday. We can hardly wait!!!

Happy birthday, Lori!!! We love you lots and lots and...

Wanna look like yourself or someone perfect???

This Friday is the Wichita County students picture day. Abigayle brought her picture folder home last week. It came complete with the various packages that parents could choose from such as a different assortment and quantity of pictures. Each package had different prices, of course.

Something that was new in the last couple of years is that you can now choose the background color of your pictures. Pretty kool, huh?

Something that I was surprised to see was that, for a substantial increase in the price, the artists at the photography lab will now do such things as color over any blemishes and/or facial scars that may be present on your child's face, brighten and whiten his or her teeth, straighten the student's hair and make it look perfect.

Boy, when my sisters and I were growing up, your parents just got what they got. If their child had rooster tails, acne all over their face, green teeth, that's how they looked in their pictures. No big shocker there! But now, when friends and family come to visit at your house and they gaze at your picture wall, they'll see your family pictures with your children's school pictures right next to them. Problem is that the student pictures will paint that person as being perfect. The family picture might show that your child actually looked normal and was complete with a pimply face, had purple or missing teeth and had forgotten to brush his or her hair that particular day.

Go figure! Once these artists discover a way to block out the student's braces, he or she will find out how he or she would look if they were picture perfect. I, for one, am not too sure that this is a good thing. Some kids already have problems with low or no confidence at all. If they have to look at that flawless photograph every day and face the reality of how they actually looked in their pictures and today, it may be alot to handle...

Just another of MY many opinions.

Mary Maids Opens for Business

For the last year or so, we have all seen the TV commercials with the two merry maids cleaning. Bubbles are floating in the air and the homeowner is excited to walk into her fresh clean house and startles the cleaning ladies with her singing. Lately, we have been seeing a car going up and down the streets with the name Mary Maids printed on both sides of the rear windows. The car belongs to Mary Waldren of Leoti. She opened her Mary Maids two weeks ago. So far, she has already hired a new employee to help her with current as well as new and future clients. Once their client load reaches a certain amount, Mary will hire another employee. If you're needing some help with your cleaning, you are in luck! Mary is looking for new clients!!!

Mary and her associates can work for any person in any location. Maybe you only need someone to clean for you one time--such as with your seasonal cleaning or holiday cleaning, etc. Others may want to hire this person on a monthly or weekly basis. Maybe you need help with your cleaning more than once a week. In any case, give Mary a call at 620-874-1486. She'll take it from there.

Mary Maids will work in town or in the country.

For more information including rates, etc., give Mary a call!

Today is Family Day!!!

Do you know what your kids want you to bring to the dinner table? YOU!!!

A new tradition has just begun. Gather your kids and have dinner together at the table. It will be held on the 4th Monday of every September. That just happens to be the 27th this year.

Let me know what you think of this thought! Personally, I LOVE IT!!!

Sit down to eat and visit while you leave the TV turned OFF. Way too many families are choosing to eat at different times rather than at the same time. Many families choose to eat with their TV as their main focus. Therefore, parents and children never actually "connect" with one another. Invite your children to share the happenings of their day with you. Prove to them that you REALLY care! It is a proven fact that children who eat with their parents at the dinner table every night, are far less likely to drink alcohol, smoke cigarettes and take drugs.

Do this for each other. Do this for you.

Happy Family Day!!!

Additional Information on Mel's

Last night, I learned more information on Mel's Foodliner.

Just recently, their third cash register was taken out. It really opened up the space at the front of the store. A friend of ours was over last night and told us that the other two registers, conveyor belt stands are also going to be taken out. To take their place, will be new registers that will be using scanners. It is a proven fact that these scanners are quicker and more precise than the former registers. Management types in the sale prices into the registers' computer system so that customers do not have to rely on the check-out person's memory on what the sale price is. Another advantage is that no employee will be responsible for changing price stickers on each can or package as the price of that item either goes up or goes down. Customers will enjoy less wait time at the check-out stand. So, all and all, this is a much better option for both the grocery store and customer.

Mel's Foodliner has always been a nice, clean, well-lit store. Wichita Countians are VERY fortunate to have it in Leoti! It is EXTREMELY important that we SHOP AT HOME!!! It's just like Daddy always said, if we do not, we will be driving to Garden City for a loaf of bread and a gallon of milk...

Wicked Weed Whacker

At the beginning of Summer, the girls and I decided that we were going to do something that we had never done before--grow a vegetable garden. A good friend of ours brought his rototiller over and dug up the portion of our yard that we chose. It amounted to just a little over the size of a postage stamp. We thought that we would start out small the first time and grow later. Sounds good, huh?

We had so much fun planting the plants and sowing our seeds. It was a big thril to see them growing and an even bigger thrill to see the fruits and vegetables take hold.

The problam was that the Summer was terribly hot. I kept up with the work fairly well until the temps got too warm for me. (My heart condition stipulates that I not be outside under 40 degrees or over 80 degrees.) Once the heat was rising to the 100 plus point, the weeds took over the garden. As time went by, the weeds took over that part of our yard. We just gave in to the weeds. It was too late for idiot sticks. We needed something more like a tree saw to cut these dudes down!

Some great friends of ours, M.M. and C.M., offered their homemade weed cutter. M brought it over yesterday and instructed Stan on how to operate it. Stan learned early on that this guy was capable of doing much more than just some regular weed thinning. So, he dressed in heavy jeans and tall thick work boots. He went out back and fired up the W.W.W. Believe me, it didn't take long for Stan to make mincemeat out of these weeds that had extremely thick stalks.

I found something upseting after I went in to drag off these fallen tree-like weeds. Underneath this forest, was a huge community of spiders, crickets, fire ants and a whole slew of bugs. Once their cover had been blown, they were running towards houses for protection. I feel sorry for our neighbors who are going to fnd these critters knocking at their doors...

Thank you, M and C, for letting us borrow this invention of yours!!! We couldn't have done it without you!!!!

I ran over a porcupine with my push mower???

Today was reserved for working in our yard that was definitely not up to our usual standards. While I was mowing in the front yard, I ATTEMPTED to mow down a marigold plant that had grown to 3-3 1/2 feet tall. Earlier in the summer, it budded out heavily but nothing ever bloomed. Instead it dropped the buds and kept growing. I had planted another of these marigolds that Grandma, Neva Kiefer-Duncan, had given to us on the other side of the yard. It budded and bloomed but only grew to a height of about 1 foot tall. I have NO idea why these two were so totally different???

I suspect that this may possibly be the last time that we will be mowing for the 2010 season so I decided to mow down the marigold plant also. Nothin' doin'. This plant refused to go willingly. I soon gave up trying and started to go around the plant. That was when I felt a prick in my shorts. When I looked down to see what had hit me, I discovered over 100 "quils" stuck in my shorts and in my shirt. I then decided to go into the house and take care of the problem. As soon as Abigayle saw me, she asked me where I had found a porcupine in Leoti. It was so cute that I could not help but chuckle.

I ASSUME that these quils are really seeds from the marigold plant. Do any of you know anything about this? My shorts had to be thrown away as there were too many of the quils stuck in them and they were too dificult to remove.

Former Leoti teenager is Missing

Sorry that I am just getting this report here! I went through my DVR's recordings and came across a news report that was broadcast on KSN last week about Karen Corson. Karen is 17-years-old and lived in Leoti until a year ago. Most recently, I THINK that she was living in the Larned, Ks. area. Officials do not suspect any violent activity was used in her disappearance. They think that she just ran away from home.

If you know where she is or might be, please call your local sheriff's office and give them the information.

Mel's Foodliner

We just went to Mel's to purchase some groceries. It was shocking at how much LESS we had to pay for our two items--eggs and milk. As you all know, when gas prices soared, so did the prices on these two items. But, gas prices are staying high so why did these prices go down? Well, Stan mentioned the price difference to John Smith, the store's manager. He told Stan that Mel has signed up with a different grocery warehouse than where he had been buying his groceries. What a difference it has made!!! If you haven't checked in lately at Mel's, do it now. I think that you, too, will be quite impressed.

Golf Course Members Request

As I've mentioned here before, lots of fun to be had will be available at the Leoti Municipal Golf Course on Sunday, October 3rd. This event is to raise money for expenses of the golf course and is open to EVERYONE from far and wide!!!

Games will be set up for the kiddies. The golf course members are in need of a few items for them.

A minature golf course will be erected. (Doesn't that sound like a hoot???) They are in need of some wire stakes to be put in the ground that will NOT leave big holes.

There will also be a sandpile. They are in need of some small plastic toys, Cammo-like toys and colorful, plastic toys.

They also need some sort of a ball return. Plastic molded shapes like these used to come with kids' race car games.

If you have or can get some of these items, please send an email to Janelle Downs at cjdowns@wbsnet.org . Janelle will be very happy to save you a trip of having to deliver them yourself. She will come to your home or business to pick them up.

Don't forget that they are wanting individuals or groups to come to the golf course and set up displays of items that you want to sell. Do you have a craft or skill that people would be interested in purchasing? For instance, anything that you would sell at Scott City's Whimmy Diddle, would be great! Or, have you canned something this year that you would like to sell to those people who did not plant a garden? Thanksgiving and Christmas are just a few steps away from us now. Would you like to bring homemade foods that could be frozen until the holidays are closer? Do you make jewelry, purses, vests? Do you have any pets to sell or give away? You could bring pictures of them to the festival! Do you make candles? Do you make toys? Do you have any inventions that others may appreciate? Do you want to set up a display of services that your business offers? Do you make candies? Do you make furniture? The list goes on and on of what you could offer to the rest of us.

Thank you for any assistance that you can give!!!

What happened???

Back in the day, when someone passed away, friends, family, neighbors, co-workers, etc. went out of their ways to make sure that the bereaved family knew that they were being thought of.

For instance, when Daddy became unbelievably ill with cancer, his family and friends brought over food, etc. The people at the grade school who worked with Mama signed up on a list to bring over meals for the last month or so of his life. Their generosity astonished Mama, Lori's family, Lona Sue's family and my family. Then Daddy passed away. More food was brought in to our family day after day. I remember that other people chose to bring over such things as paper plates, napkins, plastic silverware, toilet paper, kleenexes...and the list went on and on...

Later in April, May and June of 2002, I became extremely ill with heart problems that required open heart surgery in May. I couldn't believe how many people delivered meals, plants, flowers, etc to our house.

When Lori became so very ill, family and friends also brought over food, etc.

In each one of these instances, my family and I were soooooo very appreciative of each and every person who remembered us in our times of need! But, then, lately, I have received distressing news from people scattered throughout the United States. It seems that many people who are going through grieving processes are no longer being remembered by anyone in these ways. Though they are going through extremely rough spots in their roads, they are still having to cook their meals. Some of those people are so sickened by their loss, that they choose not to cook anything. Therefore they do not eat anything.

I remember that a man passed away in Wichita County a few years ago. Approximately 20 or 30 sons, daughters, grandchildren, etc came to his home to congregate and support one another. I was dumbfounded when I learned that NOT ONE single person brought anything to his family! He was a good man and came from a good respected family in the community. So why did no one want to help his family out in their distress??? I remember that several years ago, we lost a much-loved dog. Even then when no actual people had passed on, we received meals from a couple of sets of friends.

When I was growing up, if Mama or Daddy knew of people going through this kind of life-changing ordeal, we made trips to the grocery store and purchased items so that Mama could prepare a casserole or two that we promptly delivered to the family. All was appreciated by the recipients.

But, now, I am being told that many families feel as if no one cares about them in their times of extreme need.

I would like to challenge each and every one of you to help me become more involved in providing food and supplies to the people of our communities who need to know that we care.

I would REALLY like to hear what you think about this topic of conversation.

Sincerely,

Sympathy notes to the Lines Family via his obituary

A reader has alerted me that she had sent a note to the Maurice Lines family yesterday through the funeral chapel but it was returned to her without a copy of the note being given to his family. Given the fact that her family and his family were good friends, this came as quite a shock. So, don't be surprised if you send a note in this manner and it comes right back to you. I will attempt to get a mailing address for his widow. If I have it, I will post it here.

Thank you!

Update on the "hangee" at Boot Hill

I mentioned earlier that a man from Arkansas accidentally "hanged" himself at Boot Hill in Dodge City earlier this week. Just wanted to let you know that he is fine and has been released from the hospital. Hopefully, he'll be less likely to want to put his neck in a noose in the future. LOL!!!

Living together

I know that I am about to ruffle more than a few feathers here but when has that stopped me from stating my opinion here anyway???

I was raised being told that a man and woman living together without the benefit of a signed marriage license is against the Bible. I remember when I was in my school age years, I only knew of two couples "who were living in sin" within the city limits of Leoti. I remember back then that those couples were really scorned for their decisions.

Through the years, many more couples decided to live with each other without being married. Today, fewer and fewer people appear to mind. Yesterday, I was listening to the radio and heard a newsman report that in the past year since the state of our economy has plumetted, an EXTRA 13% of the American man/woman couples have chosen to move in with one another so that they can save money that would otherwise have been spent on additional rent, utilities, etc. Most of that 13%, have no desire to marry their "mate". They are living together out of necessity.

I find that to be a very sad and upsetting situation. I know that I would HATE having to live with a person just because he or I needed to save money. Many Americans are facing that today anyway. I would stagger a guess that that particular percentage will continue to climb until our economy is back up to a comfortable level again.

I also feel obligated to pass on my personal opinion on the matter of unmarried couples living together. When I was younger, I scorned these couples. I actually scorned them much longer and later that many of my friends and family members did. But, now, I am facing a different outlook on the entire thing. I now realize that THIS IS NONE OF MY DOG-GONE BUSINESS. It is definitely NOT my obligation or right to sit back in judgement of these people or ANYONE ELSE for that matter. God is the only one to make judgements.

This is what my mom has said to both of my sisters and I for a long time. "Hate the sin. Love the sinner." Boy! This woman possesses so VERY much wisdom and knowledge!!! The longer that I remember these 6 words, the more I know that she is exactly right!!! For a long time, my closest friends and family considered me to be way too opinionated. Though they were not "praising" me for this, I still reserved a great deal of PRIDE in this fact. The older that I get, the more that I learn about our Forgiving God, the less opinions of judgement that I carry with me.

I also want to add that I happen to thoroughly LOVE some people who are dear to me who have chosen this option in their own lives. At least one of these couples is doing this because of legal obligations. If things were not so tight legally, they would marry one another in a heartbeat. I know of a couple of couples who had been married to one another but married life did not work out for them. They divorced and later, began living with one another. When things aren't going so well, they seperate into two seperate homes. When things are better in their personal relationship, one-half of the couple moves back in with the other half. (Hmmm, now that is one thing that I cannot understand very well...BUT it is NOT my right to judge them...) The Good Lord knows just how IMperfect Lynn Elder-Blau is!!!

Addition to "The Blog"

As of yesterday, it is much easier than ever to express your personal opinions on this blog. Where before, you had to go through a bunch of red tape, etc to get to that point. Your name will NOT be placed with your comment UNLESS you want to type it in yourself after you write your comment.

At the bottom of each post, you will find a short series of options to choose from such as Comment, Funny, Interesting and Cool. Just place your pointer into the corresponding box that you desire. It's THAT easy!!!

And, please remember Folks, I TRULY enjoy hearing from you even if you don't agree with whatever I have posted on my blog. What a boring world we would live in if we all shared the exact same opinion on everything...

Thank you!!!

Black in the White House--THIS IS NONE MORE THAN A HOAX!!!

>
I think that the post that we had received in our email box that I later had written here was confusing. I have erased the email that had been recognized as being an email virus. I just want you to know that if you receive an email titled "A Black in the White House" OR "A Black Muslim in the White House", it does NOT come complete with a built-in virus that will destroy your computer as soon as you open the email.

People who write non-truthful email like these to others, are trying to do nothing more nor nothing less that cause mass mania around the world to people who own computers.

I apologize for all of the confusion.

Old Farmer's Advice

A couple of friends sent this email to us. I love it and want to share it with all of YOU! Both of my grandfathers were farmers in Western Kansas. I never had the opportunity to meet either of Daddy's parents but I had the AMAZING blessing of knowing Mama's parents! They were the bestest ever!!! As I read through this email, I could imagine Granddaddy and my Uncle LaVere Pepper coming up with the wisest of all of this wisdom. Whether you live on the farm or in the city, you can pick up so very much from all of this. VLE-B

Old Farmer's Advice

Your fences need to be horse-high, pig-tight and bull-strong.

Keep skunks and bankers at a distance.

Life is simpler when you plow around the stump.

A bumble bee is considerably faster than a John Deere tractor.

Words that soak into your ears are whispered…...not yelled.

Meanness don't just happen overnight.

Forgive your enemies; it messes up their heads.

Do not corner something that you know is meaner than you.

It don't take a very big person to carry a grudge.

You cannot unsay a cruel word.

Every path has a few puddles.

When you wallow with pigs, expect to get dirty.

The best sermons are lived, not preached.

Most of the stuff people worry about, ain't never gonna happen anyway.

Don 't judge folks by their relatives.

Remember that silence is sometimes the best answer.

Live a good and honorable life, then when you get older and think back, you'll enjoy it a second time.

Don 't interfere with somethin' that ain't bothering you none.

Timing has a lot to do with the outcome of a rain dance.

If you find yourself in a hole, the first thing to do is stop diggin'.

Sometimes you get, and sometimes you get got.

The biggest troublemaker you'll probably ever have to deal with, watches you from the mirror every mornin'.

Always drink upstream from the herd.

Good judgment comes from experience, and a lotta that comes from bad judgment.

Lettin' the cat outta the bag is a whole lot easier than puttin' it back in.

If you get to thinkin' you're a person of some influence, try orderin' somebody else's dog around.

Live simply, love generously, care deeply, speak kindly, and leave the rest to God.

Amen to all of this.

What do I and Marilyn Monroe have in common???

Not much except for the fact that the blond bombshell and I have real problems keeping our skirts down where they belong.  The big difference is that she got paid bookoo bucks to have her picture taken over a subway fan of some sort that forced air under her skirt and sent it flying.  Many men (and a few girls, I am sure) really got a big bang out of the picture taken of her flying skirt.  It just may be the most recognizeable picture around the world that she had ever taken.

In MY case, I just hope and pray that no peeping toms with cameras in hand were anywhere around when the wind blew my skirt up over the top of my head this afternoon.  Believe me, if any men saw this, they probably won't be too interested in woman folk again!!!

Since my fashion calamity of last week, I have really tried to dress myself ALOT better than I have done in the past.  I would never go so far as to say that I "looked great" but at least my sides were completely undercover today.  My blouse stayed right where it belonged.  YAY!!!  But my skirt that was blown upwards, left little to no imagination on my lower extremities...

It is a good thing that cooler temps are just around the corner.  I am going to purchase a couple of sets of overalls that will cover my arms, my chest, my sides, my waist, my hips, my legs...  So,  if you see a fat lady sporting a nice new attractive pair of overalls, you'll know it is me!!!  I wonder if they come with lace or beads attached to them???

JUst CREEPY!!!

Many people in our neck of the woods have been complaining of an over-abundance of bugs of all kinds including crickets and spiders.  Recently, we've noticed a huge amount of wolf spiders around here.  I am assuming that this is a sign of the winter that we will be having very soon.

Today, a Wichita County business discovered a spider in one of their offices.  Before the office manager saw the spider, she reached for a flyswatter to kill it as soon as a co-worker mentioned that there was a spider on her floor.  She walked around her desk, swatter in hand......and stopped instantly when she discovered a HUGE spider on the floor.  Believe me, I think that it is doubtful that her swatter could have done much harm to this lil fellar.  You see, the two employees laid the swatter next to the spider along with a tape measure that showed exactly how big this little guy was.  Instead of a flyswatter, the employees would have been better off calling 9-1-1 and asking for the sheriff to come over and SHOOT it!  LOL!!!

It literally measured between 4 and 4 1/2 INCHES wide.  The spider then tried to get between the floor and the door to the adjoining office.  I would say that the gap is anywhere between 1/2 and 1 inch high.  There was no go.  This spider was actually too TALL to squeeze under the door!!!

Eventually, this spider was scooped into a plastic cup.  A few minutes later, the business' pesticide company came in for his monthly work.  As soon as he saw the spider, he confirmed that this was a wolf spider and that many spiders this size and larger were being spotted all over the place in our area.  Not only are they in our yards and gardens, they're also in OUR HOUSES!!!

If you have not contacted a pesticide company already, you may want to purchase some spider spray and spray it along your baseboards, etc.  Follow the instructions on the can.

Well, after seeing the pictures of this nasty varment, it is doubtful that I will have bug-free dreams tonight.  LOL!

Stupid is as stupid does

This is one of the many phrases that became quite popular once Tom Hanks' movie, FORREST GUMP, came out years ago. His mama always told him that "stupid is as stupid does." Those words came back to me as I watched the KSN News that I had recorded on our DVR last night just a few minutes ago...

Boot Hill and Front Street of Dodge City, Kansas are internationally known. People come from far and wide to step back into the good ol' days. It seems that a man, his wife and a female friend stopped by to go through this historical site yesterday. In case you have not gone through Boot Hill recently, I will try to describe the situation for you. Front Street is located just lower than where the Boot Hill Museum is. The museum has been greatly improved over the past few years. My family and I thoroughly enjoy going through it. At the back of the museum, is a door that leads onto the cemetery where cowboys--good and bad guys--were buried with their boots on. In past years, the bodies were dug up and buried elsewhere. But crosses remain there that were used to identify the body and things that happened to that person that led up to their deaths. In the center of all of this, stands a tree with two nooses hung on it. Of course, for most of us, the nooses just add that much more somber credence to the way that the citizens of the Old West lived--and died.

Yesterday, a man, his wife and a female friend of theirs stopped by Boot Hill to take a look around. The man came complete with his own camera. Once he had located the nooses, he decided that he would like to take a realistic picture of himself with his neck inside one of the nooses. Somehow, the man seems to have lost his footing which caused the noose to tighten around his neck. He passed out quickly. Thanks to the Good Lord, his female companions got to him just in the knick of time. The man was a very large man. The women struggled to get his body out of the noose but they were able to succeed in doing so. An ambulance was called to the scene. The man was then taken to the hospital in Dodge City where he remains today in stable condition.

So, now, I assume that the nooses will have to be dismantled to protect others from the same fate.

Stupid is as stupid does...

Donation of kids belongings

I FINALLY succeded in cleaning out our foyer closet yesterday! There were a bunch of denim jackets and regular jackets that no longer fit the girls. Some of these denim jackets also have been studded or painted with fabric paints. These are NOT winter coats. Abigayle's snowboots from last year and some sheepskin-lined slippers are also too small for her Elder feet. All of these items are in excellent condition and are clean. To make sure, I washed all of them. There is also a backpack which looks as if it has never been used. It is for girls and is done in the HIGH SCHOOL MUSICAL theme.

I will be donating them to the thrift shop in Leoti tomorrow, Friday.

Thank you!

Small dog

I feel obligated to inform Leotians of a dead dog that was killed on the south side of Highway 96 across the highway from Route 96. I assume that it was struck by a vehicle. It looked like a reddish brownish small terrier of some kind. It died sometime late Sunday or Early Monday.

I am passing this informationon to all of you in case you or someone whom you know is looking for a dog that matches that description. I know not who removed the dog from the side of the road. Nitrate Levels in Drinking Water

If you are like me, you tire quickly of hearing just how much "better" Europe and other foreign countries are than the good ol' United States of America. I realize that Europe is ahead of the U.S. in regards to clothing fashions, etc. To some people, that is awfully difficult to take if you are a person who strives to be up-to-date on what styles of clothing you purchase and wear. But I just received some information that I believe is far more inportant that the current length of skirts in Europe. It is the fact that the United States government is much more careful about the quantity of nitrates in our water that we ingest every single day. Nitrates have been proven over and over again that they cause cancer.

At this current time, Leoti is facing high numbers of nitrates in our water wells. The City of Leoti employees are being very careful to gather those levels and send them on to the state officials. I am not going to sit here and lie to you about what those levels are in Leoti right now. If you live in Leoti, you are also being sent letters in the mail alerting you of the current situation. But, something that I find to be very soothing is the fact that the United States officials get concerned BEFORE the nitrates become 20 parts. In all other foreign nations, including European countries, their cut-off for getting concerned is when their water measures 50 parts. What a difference!!!

Once the nitrates reach a serious level, cities across the nation purchase water filters that are placed on water pumps. These filters remove the nitrates that we would otherwise swallow.

Leighlyn's writing

I have been going through things at home trying to delete as much as possible. I came across the poem and wanted to share it with you. Believe me! This is NOT going into the trash pile!!!

A couple of years ago, without being told to by teachers, Leighlyn, who was about 10-years-old, sat down and wrote a poem about her little sister, Abigayle, who was 6 at the time. Leighlyn was asked to read what she had written for her class. It started a chain of more poetry that also resulted in being shared with her class.

Be Careful

If you should ever meet a little sister of mine
Don't tell her shes nine
Ignore her talking
Look out for her walking
For she will bite
She will give a fright
And when you meet a little sister of mine
She's a scary one, that sister of mine.

Signed,

A proud mother

Repulsive--Not to Mention Dangerous

Okay, okay...so I am a germ fanatic and I admit it but what I saw last night should have really upset anyone and everyone.

While we were in Wal-Mart, I was walking past a juice display. A man and a woman were going through the variety to find juice that they may be interested in purchasing. Big deal! Right? Of course not UNTIL I watched as the man unscrewed the lid off on of the bottles, smelled it, took a sip, put the lid back on it. AND THEN, HE PLACED IT RIGHT BACK ONTO THE SHELF!!!

I was totally floored at what I had just seen. But, of course, as oftimes the case, no employees were handy to do something about it.

So...I want to remind any and all customers out there to pass close attention to the lids, tabs, etc on items--especially food.

The unlucky sap who purchases that bottle will be open to whatever germs the "sipper" had at the time. Plus, if that bottle remains on the shelf for very long, that bacteria will continue to grow and spread throught all of the juice.

Signed,

Someone who is VERY angry with herself for not taking a more active role in stopping this bottle of juice from being purchased from someone else..................

Update on Fall Festival in Leoti

I just received this update and wanted to pass all of the information on to you. It was sent to me from Janelle Downs.

We are trying to organize a new Fall Event for Leoti. It is theFall Cruise Fest ...at the Golf Course....on Oct 3, Sunday, from 2-6 pm. We are planning a fun family afternoon, with the focus on collectiblecars. Some of us thought it would be fun for those who own cars thatare vintage, or collectible, to bring them out and show them off. The costto enter a car in the show is only $10 and includes one meal. The flyerstates $15, but that is wrong. Yes, it's a busy time but we tried to pick a Sunday afternoon possiblyin between harvest and planting...a few hours of family fun. and when isit not busy in our county, especially when planning an outdoor event? We are planning fun (free) games for kids; vendors (still taking spacereservations); Quilt Raffle; Silent auction with many items, including aTravis Berning handmade pot; meat bundles; jewelry; gift certificates....lots of fun things going on! I would really appreciate if you can email this to those on your list, inLeoti and area, and help us reach as many people as possible. We canalways use volunteers to help, too. Please see the attached flyer for more details, and anyone with questionscan call the numbers at the bottom or email me at cjdowns@wbsnet.org Thank you,Janelle Downs

Need a new car battery???

Yesterday, someone who knew that we were going to Garden City, asked us to purchase a battery for her van. She would pay us for it once we took it to her house. Instead, we called Mr. Gonzalo Romero, the owner of G and D Trucking in Leoti, who opened up his own car and truck repair service in Leoti. He also sells tires. He told Stan that he sells car batteries for $50.00 and installs them for just $5.00.

We then called the other party and relayed the information to her who was in need of the battery. She was thrilled with the price and preferred to do business with Mr. Romero. She did not know that he sold batteries. One of his specialties is oil changes which also include a car wash and interior detailing that includes vacuuming, upholstery and window cleaning for a VERY low price.

Of course, Mr. Romero was called back and given the job. Within an hour of our call, he had replaced the dead battery with a new one right there in her driveway. You just cannot complain of service such as that!!!

While in Garden City, we made a special trip to a well-known store there to check out their tire and battery department at which time we discovered that their batteries were just $2-3.00 cheaper less than what Gonzalo offers. No way, does it make sense to drive all of the way to GC for a new battery!

Anyway, we strongly recommend that people give our great friend, Gonzalo, a call at 620-874-0696! His business is located on the same block as Wheatland Electric.

Mercy! It was COLD out there!!!

When we left Leoti at approximately 2:30 yesterday afternoon, our central air conditioner was running to keep our house cooled to aproximately 74-76 degrees. Once we got home at about 9:30, we changed over to the heater mode. It was cold inside as well as outside.

When I went on the computer to check email and the blog at 9:00 a.m., it was only 50 degrees outdoors. I think that it is safe to say that this was one of the coolest mornings since last May. There were also dense fog warnings out for this part of the country.

Hopefully, Fall is just around the corner!!!

Multi-Cultural Experience

Growing up in Wichita County during the 60s and 70s, we didn't see much unfamiliar culture here. Most citizens were caucasion (white) and there were a few citizens whose ancestors had come to the United States from Mexico. Until the later 1970s, no Asian people lived in Leoti until the U.S. brought them to the U.S. for a better life. I remember that there was a large Vietnamese family who were relocated to Leoti for a very short time. One of their daughters was in my class. She was sooooo nice but had limited knolwedge of the English language.

Teachers "assigned" her to me so that I could help her in any way that I could. This was a task that I loved and completely appreciated. Li (ponounced Lee) and I became very good friends but then her parents decided to move elsewhere. (Probably because of the way that many of us stared at them as if they had four heads and two noses.) I never learned where they moved to after they left Leoti. Since then, very few Asian families set up their homes here.

Going to Garden City is really an educational thing to do. We needed odds and ends that could not be purchased in Leoti so our famly loaded up in the Blau Mobile yesterday and headed there. Eventually, we made our way through the Wal-Mart doors. While I spent MAYBE 3 minutes there looking for cold medicines in the drug department, I spotted an Asian family that included people from the very old to the very young. It was simple to see that they were very happy with one another. They visited in their native language, laughed and hugged. It was great to see that!

Just a few feet on the other side of them was an older woman who was dressed in a long and colorful dress that was completed with a piece of fabric of some sort that covered her hair, etc. All that was visible was her pretty face. She was accompanied with a much younger man whom I believed to be her grandson. They, too, were enjoying each other's company. They were speaking a language that was also unknown to me. Later, when I met the man when he was alone, we conversed briefly in English which he appeared to have mastered.

During our time there, we met many white people, many hispanics and many black people who appeared to have lived in the U.S. for their entire lives. We also came across a family that included two parents and several young children. I could not decide what race they were from. They definitely did not speak English but they did not appear to be speaking any Asian, Spanish, etc language. I couldn't put my finger on it just where they were from. The mother of the family was VERY loud and "pushy" with her husband and children.

Anyway, it is always quite interesting to be in a location where many people of other cultures congregate...

Progress at new schools in Leoti

Things are moving right along. If you check back even once a day, you'll probably see something new that was not there the day before.

Dirtwork was done just to the west side of the former VO-AG building. Once the ground was leveled, concrete was poured that will be used for parking places some day soon.

Windows are currently being removed from above the bleachers in the old junior high gym. It was determined that not only was air escaping inside and outside even when the windows were closed, but water was also entering into the gym during rain storms, etc. Once a window is removed, it is replaced with glass blocks. The light will still get through but no air or moisture will.

Not only has work been done in the new schools and the gym of the old junior high but major work was done in the high school gym over the summer. Once basketball games start up, I think that ball fans from both Wichita County and whatever county whom we are playing will be quite impressed at what they will find on the gym floor. A great deal of work needed to be done on the floor for general maintenance purposes. Before the coats of wax were applied, the Wichita County High School's medallion of an Indian was added to the floor. After that, it was coated with varnish for protection and then wax.

I have not had the opportunity to see it yet but others have told me that it is exceptional and should generate much pride from Wichita Countians--past, present and future. Other area schools have had their medallions on their gym floors for years now. I think that it will be a nice thing that we will have one also.

So, as you can see, work continues practically around the clock on our scbool building project. Contractors believe that the schools will be completed and ready for students before Winter. Students will not be moved into the new buildings until the 2011-2012 school year. Well, that is sorta the plan. Actually, there will be a 3-day moving process that will take place right after school lets out for the summer. It is assumed that the school will rent flat bed trucks to move the many pieces of furniture to their new location. I HAVE NOT heard that directly from school officials. It is just word around town.

Anyway, as a parent of daughters who are currently enrolled in our school system, it is a pleasure to see the building of the new schools and the updating of older schools. I might also add that I am very pleased with Dr. James Hardy, the school superintendant, for spending MANY hours trying to find the best and most economical way of getting new buildings here that would not require major tax increases to the people of Wichita County. Dr. Hardy, you've done a GREAT job and we salute you!!!

Two fellows needing good homes...

Jessica just told me that Clyde and Inella Scheffe are currently looking for homes for two male kittens. One is gray with stripes. His brother is yellow with stripes. They need new homes sooner than later.

The Scheffes' phone number is 620-379-4638. In case you are unfamiliar with the prefix "379", it is a Marienthal phone number. Marienthal is 8 miles east of Leoti. If you live in Leoti and call a Marienthal phone number, you will NOT be charged long distance prices.

I know that some people are concerned about having two male cats in the same house. We have two males at home and they get along GREAT! I would definitely recommend people to have a couple of male cats!!!

Cat versus Dog

Okay. I admit that some things that happen in our house aren't always things that occur in other houses. For instance, many houses consist of two adults (male and female usually), 2 kids (a boy and a girl or two girls or two boys), 1 dog and 1 cat. To us, that is too average and too boring. So, we pep it up a bit. Instead of one dog, we have a herd. Instead of one cat, we have two brothers--Goldie and Marshmallow. Already, I can hear people laughing at these two fluffy and quite handsome fellers. They have asked us not to call them indoors at night. They prefer to come in when they are good and ready. It seems that the last time we hollered for them by name, 2 cats that were up-to-no-good, took them down and rolled them around as soon as they realized that these 2 boys had sissy names, courtesy of Leighlyn and Abigayle. So now, when it is time to ready ourselves for bed, we just walk out on to the front porch and clap our hands--loudly. The boys come running soon after.

Well, tonight, we shifted our remote control for the TV from cable over to NETFLIX so that we could look for a movie to watch. We selected HAVE YOU HEARD ABOUT THE MORGANS? and sat down for our evening laughs.

Stan and Leighlyn were sitting on the loveseat. They noticed movement on the floor in front of them. It was Marshy, better known as Marshmallow. He appeared to be rather huffy about something. He kept his eyes on Stan's eyes as his mouth dropped open and something fell out of it to the floor below. Once this task had been completed, Marshy turned around and left the living room.

Stan leaned forward to see what Marshie had brought out to share. It was none other than a roll of doggy poo that had kitty litter stuck on it.

Oh, my goodness! It had happened again and the cats were NOT impressed. One of the dogs, we don't know who exactly, had needed to go outside. Since none of us had taken the hint, the dog did the next best thing. He or she went to the utility room and "made a deposit" in the boys' litter box.

Of course, no self-respecting cat is happy knowing that some dog has been using the same bathroom as the cat.

Well, we got the message--loud and clear. Stan retrieved the broom and dustpan and removed the poo from the floor and placed it in the proper recepticle--the people's stoolet.

Hopefully, the dogs who had gathered in the living room to watch the movie also, got the message from Marshmallow...

Only in our house!!!

Update on City Fall Clean-Up Week

I just spoke with Code Enforcement Officer Rick Harp in regards to vehicle and tire pick-up in October.

He has spoken to the County officials about all of this. At this time, the County has been working at getting metal items out of the landfill. So far, three semi-loads have been transferred to a metal recycling center in Colorado. This will allow the City employees to bring out non-working vehicles to the landfill.

If you happen to have such a vehicle, you need to contact City Hall at 375-2341 to make arrangements. You must also be able to present a valid vehicle title before the vehicle can be towed away.

They will also be hauling off old tires. At this time, the City is waiting on hearing from the County Department about what the charges will be per tire. As many of you already know, the County was forced in to charging fees for tires disposed at the dump awhile ago. Each citizen who is discarding tires will need to pay this fee.

As soon as I receive this information, I will post it here.

Thank you!!!

Sadly, we purchased a new oak dining room table and 6 chairs to match it approximately 4 or 5 years ago. The table is still BEAUTIFUL and very sturdy. Unfortunately, the chairs lacked alot to be desired...

Aunt Yvonne and Uncle LaVere Pepper

Today, I think that my mother may have just given my daughter, Leighlyn, the greatest compliment--ever.

I think that the Elder family is much like most other families in the sense that we try to find out which of our relatives passed on certain traits to others. For instance, we think that Grandmother Nonny passed her lack of balance and grace on to me. Sad to say but several of us believe that I passed my "good looks" on to our dear, sweet Abigayle. We also think that Leighlyn inherited her instrumental music talent from Lori and Lona Sue. But today, as Mama, Lori and I discussed sweet personality traits of Leighlyn, Mama summed it all up by saying that Leighlyn inherited those from my dear and beautiful Aunt Yvonne Pepper who lives in Johnson, Kansas. She is married to Mama's oldest brother, one of the all-time best men to ever walk the face of Earth, Uncle LaVere Pepper.

If you have ever had the opportunity to know and love, Uncle LaVere and Aunt Yvonne, you know how extremely special each of them is. (I need to explain something here. Y-V-O-N-N-E is pronounced Ya-von if you listen to me. It is the name that I gave her when she was welcomed into our family just a year or so after I was born. In actuality, her name is pronounced E-von. To this day, I am probably the only one who mispronounces her name but she has never criticized me one time for this butchering of her name. Does that give you an idea of what kind of lady, Aunt Yvonne is??? It should tell you that she is the TRUE description of a Christian lady and is just the way that God wants all of us to be just as Uncle LaVere is exactly the way God wanted him to be when he created him.

Before the Good Lord took Granddad and Nonny Pepper home with Him way too many years ago, Uncle LaVere's family usually met Mama's family at our grandparents' home in Syracuse each and every Sunday. We cherish the beautiful hours, minutes and seconds that we all shared together and long for those good times again...

When you open the dictionary to look up the description of the word, Christian, you will find two pictures beside the definition. Those two people are LaVere and Yvonne Pepper. They go out-of-their-ways to do nothing more than to bring love and happiness to others and they refuse to give into such temptations such as to gossip about the people they just saw at the grocery store parking lot... They are always there for EVERYONE, ANYTIME that they are asked to be there. Both were blessed with hearts of gold.

During their marriage, God blessed them with one child, Allyn. He is three years younger than me. And what a man they have raised! While many people his age are out drinking, smoking and tearing up the world doing whatever, he is working hard and is doing just what his parents always taught him to do--being an exceptional Christian, man, husband to his girlfriend, Karen, and raising their two children. In reality, Allyn and Karen were married over 20 years ago but he still refers to her as his girlfriend and he still looks at here with so much love and admiration that many women are envious of their love, bond and commitment to one another.

Anyway, Leighlyn, Nonny may have just given you the all-time best compliment EVER...

THIS is a blog moment in time...

Every now and then, I find either myself or a member of my close family in a situation that I refer to as a "blog moment". Today, I was the one centered in one.

Before I get ahead of myself, I need to go wwwwwwwwwwaaaaaaaaaaaaayyyyyyy back to when I first got out of my big fluffy warm snuggly bed. You get the point, I am quite sure. After I had distributed my weight evenly on both feet, both of my eyes were half-way open and the smell of Stan's coffee had entered into my sinuses, I determined that I needed to "pick out" my outfit for the day.

For most women, that can be a very time-consuming activity. For me on most days, that decision is made quickly. Since I do not have a regular morning job, there is usually no need for me to dress appropriately to meet the public. Most mornings are spent right here at home where I engage in such things as making beds, sweeping floors, washing laundry... . For those occassions, I see absolutely NO reason for dressing nicely, putting on make-up, etc. I used to bounce out of bed. Now, I find that that is a thing of the past for me. I don't exactly drag myself out of bed. I am sure that that will be the case sooner than later. What I do is somewhere in between those. After that, I take time out of my busy routine to brush my teeth, run a brush through my hair, put some deodorant on and either throw some old dress on that is covered with splashes of this paint color and splashes of that paint color or I pull on a pair of shorts that have also been "well-decorated" with house paint and pull on an old shirt with stains of some kind or another. I don't even bother to make sure that the original colors of the shirt and shorts look good together. I mean, why should I???

So today, I decided on the old dress. I needed some laundry and cleaning supplies so I decided to make a trip to $ General shortly after the girls went to school. For most self-respecting women, there would be NO way that they would go to the alley in garb like that but I evidentally have no self respect left anywhere in my body nowadays. (Believe me, I have done VERY little in my life of almost 49 years that would prompt self respect!) (I just heard a sigh from Lori as she is reading this. Don't worry, Lori! I am not depressed... just facing facts. LOL!!!)

So, I go to $ General, walk through the front doors where I am greeted by a friendly store manager and a couple of customers waiting in line. Though it was still fairly early in the day, all of these people already had smiles on their faces which I found to be quite delightful! I got a shopping cart, pulled out my grocery list and went to shopping. Along the way, I enjoyed visiting with just about every customer in the store at the time before I eventually made my trip to the check-out counter. The sweet clerk rang up all of my purchases on the cash register while other customers gathered into line behind me. Once she had finished checking, she told me how much I owed the store. THAT was when I realized that I had forgotten to transfer money onto my debit card! Oh, mercy, me... I was soooooooooooooooooo embarrassed. I apologized to the clerk and everyone else in line for this tragedy. Everyone was very kind about the whole situation. I immediately left the store to go home to my handy dandy computer so that I could put money onto my card, get back to the store, pay for everything and haul all of the groceries out to the Blau Mobile. Yeppers, Folks! My day was off to a not-so-wonderful start....... It was just getting started though!

After I had transferred the bags from my cart into the mobile, I returned it to the interior of the store. That was when, even though I was dressed like a pauper, a dear sweet lady whom I had not seen in several months, gave me a great big hug! I appreciated and NEEDED that so much! She left the store and then I discovered a lady pushing her cart with a cute little girl standing up in it towards me. I had no idea who these people were but that didn't stop me from touching the little girl on the head and telling her mother how cute she was. Not such a wonderful thing to do. This poor young mother had no idea who or what I was. She pulled her daughter closer to her body. For the first time in my life, I felt like some kind of a criminal. Not a feeling that I savored.

THEN, I decided to go visit Lori and Lars for a few minutes before I went home to bury myself in work. We visited for a few minutes and just at about the time that I needed to be leaving, Lori was hit by the WORST nose bleed that I have ever seen in my life!!! Blood just POURED out of her nose! Lori, as you'll remember, just went on blood thinners less than a month ago. I assumed that this was the cause of her latest calamity. I've been on blood thinners for 8 years and had never seen bleeding like this. I knew that I had to get her to the emergency room RIGHT AWAY. Then, I looked down at the fashionable clothing that I was sporting. I told Lori that I was going to run home and put some decent clothes on. Instead, she instructed me to wear one of her dresses so that we could get to wherever we needed to go quicker. When you look like I do, it is easy to change clothes. I don't have to find a full-length mirror to take good long looks at to see if my outfit needs to be adjusted here or there or... I just threw my dress across their bed, grabbed another dress, threw it over my head and I was ready to go!!! But, when I took a step out of the bedroom, I noticed that Lori's dress was puddling all over the floor. I couldn't even see my shoes (not that I see them much unless my bottom is on a chair and my feet are up on the ottaman!) I gathered the excess fabric with my hands and walked towards Lori. I remember distinctly asking her "Is this the way that this dress is SUPPOSED to look?" Her reply was "Yes, yes it is." Okay. That was good enough for me. The only fashion trends that I am up-to-date on are "what is new in the Victorian home designs." And, come to think about it, those are anything BUT new. That is the beauty of the style!

To shorten this story, I will tell you that Lori was able to get her nosebleed to stop. She, Lars and I were hungry by then so we decided to order lunch from the ever-popular Dairy King. I made a list of what everyone wanted and I got it ordered from the sanctity of Leif and Lori's living room. About 15 minutes later, I loaded myself up into the Blau Mobile and headed to the D.K. Oh, mercy. My heart sank when I looked at the parking lot there and discovered that not only had everyone and their dog showed up to eat Myron's BBQ today, but they brought the other 3 or 4 dogs with them also.

I was able to park the van and waited INSIDE the van until the D.K. employees pointed to me which would mean that my order was ready for pick-up. Once I received that signal, I ATTEMPTED to exit the Blau Mobile but tripped on my (Lori's) dress first. Oh, yeah, everyone, I all but fell on my ample rear end right there in front of the 5 or 600 people there during the lunch hour. I straightened myself and pretended that what had just happened was really just a figment in my own imagination that no one else could see. All the while, I knew better though. It seemed as if everyone's eyes were glued on my volumptuous body dragging my MUCH taller sister's long dress behind me--tripping me all of the way. (Kinda reminded me of Daddy walking me down the aisle just 29 years ago...) Everyone in the church that day was laughing too! LOL!!! I finally fastened my eyes on the sidewalk in hopes that if I could not see anyone there, they wouldn't be able to see me either. Hmmm. I don't think that it worked out that way though.

The clerk told me how much our order cost. When I lifted my hand and arm to hand her my debit card, I felt a slight breeze just on that side of my body. Wonder what caused that??? Don't worry! You're about to find out.

I gathered the food and the drinks and did my best to walk somewhat normal to the van. I drove several blocks across town and parked in Leif and Lori's driveway. I honked the horn so that Lars would know that I needed help getting everything into the house. Between Lars and I, all food was indoors within a minute or two. The three of us ate our lunch and enjoyed conversation. Soon after we finished eating, Mama dropped by to check on everyone. All went very well UNTIL I stood up to go change dresses. THAT is when Mama asked me what in the world I was wearing and had I worn it anywhere IN PUBLIC??? ON, NO!!! That is when my heart sank somewhere between my two feet...

Why??? What in the world was wrong with my attire??? I explained to her that Lori told me that the dress was supposed to fit like that. Lori humbly agreed UNTIL I changed positions on the floor and lifted my arm ever so gently. I feared that Lori was going to choke when she gasped. OH, MY GOD!!! Lori had forgotten and I being the intelligent giant that I am had never bothered to notice that there were TWO VERY LONG HOLES that extended from my arrmpits to just above my thigh!!!!!! They allowed sunshine and everything else into my FAT body that thought that it was hiding behind elegant silky fabric. Mercy, me!!! Every last pocket of fat and individual piece of cellulite was visible to anyone and EVERYONE whether they wanted to see it or not!!! (Chances are that they did not want to see it.) I probably caused people at the Dairy King to lose their appetities BEFORE they ever took one bite out of their jiffy burgers!!!!!!!!!!! Sorry about that, everyone!!!

Anyway, life is good--no, it is GREAT!!! Afterall, I agree with this saying: "Blessed are they who can laugh at themselves for they shall never cease to be amused."

Now, you know why I am always smiling or laughing. I have done or said something else that has just amused me...and probably plenty of others also...
