Janice Elder
My Aunt Janice had open heart surgery that resulted in two replaced arteries on August 7th. Since then she has been staying with her son, Darrin, until she was strong enough to return home. She is at home now. She is still weak but is glad to be in her very own home. She wants everyone to know that she really appreciates everyone's prayers and thoughts.

Given the fact that I had heart surgery in 2002, I know how long the weakness lasts. I think that you should probably call Aunt Janice first and make sure that she is up to visits before you go to her house. I would advice that you not over-extend your visit. If she begins to tire, you should probably let her get some rest. PLEASE do not go to her home if you are having any viruses or have had a temperature in the past 24 hours. It is imperative that she not become ill at this time. Thank you!!!

When I began writing in my blog, I doubted if anyone would even be interested in opening it up to take a look. But, since I was sending out MULTIPLE email about what was happening here to about everyone on my email list and at least one of those people had had enough of my "writings", I decided to take that person's advice and start a blog. I have to admit, at the time, my heart was thoroughly broken and I was extremely embarrassed. However, I created my blog and began writing. Now, I am beginning to hear from people in one way or another, that they are checking my blog out on a regular basis. You have NO idea what a thrill that is for someone like me!!!
I've never felt like I was anything special or had any talents worth mentioning. However, some people are actually enjoying what I share!!! What a joy!

Some have commented on the blood red sun that has been blazing in the Leoti sky lately. There were all kinds of theories as to what is causing the son to look like it has been. Meteorologists have reported that the smoke from the California fires is responsible.

An amusing conversation.
I took Abigayle out of school this morning at 10:00 to go to an appointment in Scott City. I picked my mother up at the school at the same time because she was going with us. As my mom and I were waiting for Abigayle outside of her classroom, Mama and I enjoyed looking at the students' artwork hanging on the wall. The students were to draw a picture of their family. Abigayle drew her Daddy with HUGE muscles, her sissy, Leighlyn, and her Mommy in a long pink dress. Of course, I thought that it was the best artwork ever produced by a seven-year-old.
Later, my mom and I were telling my sister, Lori (Riri as her nephew and nieces affectionately call her) about the artwork. If you are not familiar with Lori and me, you probably are not aware of the fact that we are a bit on the heavy side. Whoa! That's an understatement! We are ROBUST!
Jokingly, Riri asked Abi why she hadn't drawn a picture of Riri on the poster. Well, get ready for this one. As the old saying goes "out of the mouths of babes..." Very seriously, Abi explains to Riri that the poster paper wasn't "big enough" to draw Riri on it. Oh, my goodness! Nonny, Riri and I laughed and laughed and laughed at Abigayle's latest... Someday, we'll be able to write a book on Abigayle's funnies.

Wichita County Seasonal Flu Shots
I am passing on information that I just received via telephone from our county health department. As of today, September 2nd, the regular flu vaccine has not arrived yet but it should be here very shortly. At this time, they are planning on beginning the flu shots on Thursday, September 10th but only to self-paying patients. Each shot will be $15.00. For Medicare and Medicaid patients, those shots will be available in October as the State will not pay for the administration of these shots before October.
The Swine Flu Vaccine Schedule is a different story. At this time, there are still alot of questions as to who and when these shots should be given. I was told today that there may not be a surplus of this vaccine available. If that is the case, the first tier of patients who would be able to get the shots are pregnant women, parents and caregivers of babies 6-months-old and younger. People with underlying health issues will also be given the shots before the general public. Each patient must take 2 shots in order for the vaccine to be totally effective.

More on Lee Nathan Riddiough
As I said earlier, seeing Lee Nathan go has been very saddening for my family and me. Lee Nathan was Daddy's life-long best friend. We did not consider him and LoRetta to be our friends. They are our family. I only hope that Lee Nathan knows how very much we all love him. I'm always telling people not to put off telling people today how much they love that person because tomorrow is guaranteed for no one. In this case, I know that I did not tell Lee Nathan enough how much all of us love him. As Daddy's cancer progressed, some friends became scarcer and scarcer when it came to spending time with Daddy. That was not the case with Lee Nathan. Though it tore him up to see Daddy so very ill and in so much pain, he made it a point to come over all of the time to show his love and support not only for Daddy but for all of us.

Lee Nathan, age 77, passed away on Sunday, August 30th at Wesley Rehabilitation Hospital in Wichita, Ks. after suffering a fall and a stroke. He was born on Feb. 9th, 1932 in Wichita County to Ralph and Elizabeth (Lizzie) Kiefer-Riddiough. He served in the U.S. Navy during the Korean Conflict. He retired after 33 years of service with the Bureau of Reclamation and the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers as an Engineering Representative serving in the U.S. and Saudi Arabia. He returned to Leoti in 1990.
Lee's passion was horses. For over 40 years, he raised, broke, trained and showed Appaloosa Horses. He and his horse, Doc, (my Daddy's personal favorite) placed first in the WORLD'S reining competition!!!
Lee Nathan had memberships in Parks Prsbyterian Church, the VFW, the Wichita County Historical Society and the Leoti Rough Riders.
He is survived by his wife LoRetta (Amermann) whom he married on June 23, 1956. Other suvivors include their daughters, LaDonna and Stephen Burrows--Cooperstown, NY and LeaRetta and Chip Gilbert--Southlake, TX. and 3 grandchildren, Mike and Keith Burrows and Lauren Gilbert. Vera Ford of Leoti is his only surviving sibling still living in Wichita County.
Services will be held @2:00, Friday, September 4th, 2009 at Parks Presbyterian Church in northwestern Wichita County. The church is 9 miles north of Leoti and 5 miles west. Rev. Paul McNall will be preciding. Wichita's U.S. Navy Funeral Detail will also be performing. Burial will be at the Carwood Cemetary close to Selkirk (between Leoti and Tribune.)
Friends may call at Price and Sons Funeral Home from 10:00 to 8:00 CST on Wednesday and Thursday. The family requests that memorials be given to Parks Presbyterian Church, the Leoti EMTs or the Wichita County Historical Society in care of the funeral home. E-condolences may be sent to the family through the funeral home's website @ www.priceandsons.com .
