Recent Letter to the Editor

This editorial came out in THE LEOTI STANDARD and THE GARDEN CITY TELEGRAM a couple of weeks ago. Originally, I had planned on posting it on my blog but before I could get it done, someone accidentally threw it away. Today, someone sent a copy of it to me so that all of my readers can read it for themselves if they missed it in the newspapers. I was THRILLED to get it after new letters to the editorial came out in last week's newspaper. I know that some of you will be angered with me for posting this here. If that is the case with you, let me apologize in advance. But I figure it this way, if people who do not live in Leoti have the right to spread their hateful venom in the papers, I have the right to spew my grievances that will be considered poison to some, right here. Afterall, I love and care about the city of Leoti and her people. VLE-B

Letter to the Editor

The Leoti City Council conducted their public budget hearing at the regular Council meeting on Monday, August 16th. Other than Council members and city staff, there was no one present at the hearing. The presentation and adoption of the annual municipal Budget is the single most important responsibility of the City Council. It provides direction, priorities, and commitment of the City’s resources. While it addresses a specific fiscal year, it sets the structure for the longer-term policy objectives of the city; it’s about where the Council determines the City should go, and how it plans to get there! It provides the opportunity for the City Council to evaluate its current services, determine needs for the different services, and balance that against the revenue required to finance them. With all of the recent accusations and proclamations from the recall committee of Jeanene French, Gene Biel, and Jim Myers, and the editorials of Charlie Ayers, and the backing of those that signed the recall petitions, and those that voted for my specific recall, I find it interesting that none of you—NONE—took the time, initiative, or interest in the City budget and what is in store for the City of Leoti. In reviewing the grounds for recall for Kansas, I don’t remember seeing retaliation on the part of incompetent former employees as being a valid reason. And if this recall wasn’t about retaliation, then you could have proven it by attending the budget hearing.

Sincerely,

Carol Berning
