Melvin L. Stegman, age 83, passed away on Wednesday, August 25, 2010 at Hays Medical Center in Hays, Kansas. Melvin was born June 16, 1927 at Loretto, Kansas, the son of Andrew & Lucy Sulzman Stegman. He was a retired farmer and had been a Wichita County resident since 1959 moving from Loretto, Kansas. He served in the United States Army as a Corporal during World War Two.
Melvin was a member of St. Mary Catholic Church in Marienthal, Kansas, as well as a lifetime member of the V.F.W. in Scott City, Kansas.
On November 21, 1959 he married Evelyn Rose Berning at Marienthal, Kansas. Melvin’s surviving family includes- Wife- Evelyn Stegman- Marienthal, Kansas Three sons and their wives- Timothy & Suzette Stegman- Cadiz, Kentucky Randall & Vickie Stegman- Edgerton, Kansas Douglas & Joni Stegman- Marienthal, Kansas One daughter and her husband- Sandra & John Lacoy, Jr.- Scott City, Kansas Three brothers- Harold Stegman- Bison, Kansas Everett Stegman- LaCrosse, Kansas Leroy & Bernadette Stegman- Grand Island, Nebraska Two sisters - Evelyn & Jim Alexander- Wichita, Kansas Bernice & Joe Wiewel- Russell, Kansas Eleven Grandchildren- Kevin Heckard, Kenneth Heckard, Derek Stegman, Clint Stegman, Eric Fuller, David Fuller, Ashley Lacoy, Audrey Lacoy, Justin Stegman, Jason Stegman & Dylan Stegman. Eight Great Grandchildren His parents, a son, Stanley Stegman and three brothers, Gerald Stegman, Raymond Stegman & Donald Stegman preceded him in death.
Vigil Services will be held at 7:00 p.m. Friday, August 27, 2010 at St. Mary Catholic Church in Marienthal, Kansas. Funeral Mass will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, August 28, 2010 at St. Mary Catholic Church in Marienthal, Kansas with Father Benjamin Martin officiating. Burial will be in St. Mary Cemetery in Marienthal, Kansas with full military honors provided by the United States Army Funeral Detail from Fort Riley, Kansas.
Memorials may be given to the Leoti E.M.T.’s or St Mary Shrine in Bison, Kansas in care of the funeral home. Friends may call from noon to 5:00 p.m. Friday at Price & Sons Funeral Home in Leoti, Kansas.
