Food Stocking

I cannot express to you enough that this is a very serious storm that is quite likely to be in our area very soon. I want you to make sure right now that you have plenty of food at your house. Here in Wichita County, I called Mel's Foodliner. Tonight, Saturday, they will be open until 7:00 CST. Tomorrow, they will be open from 11:00 to 5:00 CST. I am sure that in your town, you probably already know your grocery store's hours for the weekend. Make sure that you have plenty of groceries on hand to get you through just in case your roads are not clear enough for you to get to the store safely.

Medicine is another issue that you need to address RIGHT NOW. If you do not have enough prescription medicine to get you by for the next several days, you might want to be getting it today or tomorrow morning. I also recommend that you have plenty of medicine such as for colds and pain in your house too.

If you think that you must travel during a winter storm, make sure that your fuel tank is on FULL and that your car is stocked with plenty of blankets and sets of dry clothes, food, water, etc. It is best if your blankets and clothes are in the interior of your vehicle so that you do not have to leave your vehicle to get to them. And...make sure that you have a working cellphone with you!!! Keep a charger in the car also. Years ago, we heard about making your own heater in case your car runs out of gas. You use an empty 1 pound coffee can. Place a roll of toilet paper in it. Pour a bottle of alcohol into the toilet paper. Light it with a match or cigarette lighter. The flames are very short and last for just a few seconds. The heat will be wonderful and will continue to be releasd for several hours. Keep several rolls of toilet paper, bottles of alcohol and matches or lighters on hand in case you need to use this method again.

WARNING: Do not light this unless you have removed anything and everything around it that could catch fire.

We have never needed to use this in a vehicle but we did use it in a motel room in Wichita for a few days and it was WONDERFUL!!! Daddy was receiving chemotherapy at a nearby hospital. For some dumb reason, the motel management always turned off the heaters late in the evening and did not turn them on again until the next day. At night, we thought that we were freezing to death! This coffee can method worked wonderfully for us!

Anyway, listen to your radio for storm updates.

We are receiving freezing drizzle before the snow arrives. Ice is always a culprit that can cause electrical wiring breakage. Make sure that you have plenty of dry clothes, blankets, etc just in case a power outage might occur. Of course, strong winds can also bring down electrical lines. We're to have those also so be prepared!!!

Have snow shovels and plenty of ice melt on hand next to your front and back doors to use to clear your porches and sidewalks. Danley always keeps our snow shovel in our foyer during winter storms so that he doesn't have to worry about snow drifts forming on and around the shovel...

These are just a few suggestions that I wanted to pass on to you. It is always best to be overly prepared than not prepared enough.

  1. I hope you are staying warm - its snowing here in Pennsylvania (near Valley Forge National Park)... it's not quite as cold as it is there - but they expect some high winds tonight.

    Is Spring time coming soon?
