We are getting rid of some clutter at our house. We have decided to sell our deep cherry stained TV armoire. It stands over 6 feet tall and is probably 3 feet wide and 2 feet deep. Our 26" TV fits in it just really well and still has some extra room on the sides and above it. Our original TV that was in there was the type that was very thick. It fit in there perfectly. Our new TV is a flat screen and we have no problems with it in there either.
The top of the cabinet is arched. There are 2 sets of doors in the front. The top two doors cover the TV and a couple of shelves above the TV that are there to contain DVRs, VCRs, DVD Players, etc. Whenever you want to watch TV, just open the doors and the view to the TV is completely open.
The second set of doors cover the lower portion of the cabinet. In it is where we store A BUNCH of DVDs. You can use it to store anything you want to. There is plenty of room for a lot of stuff. LOL!
This is a very sturdy and heavy cabinet and is in excellent condition.
We are wanting to get rid of this within the next week so we are just asking $125.00 or best offer. Please send an email to us at

or call me at 620.375.8033 for more details.

Moments of Breath
While in Dodge City yesterday, we went to a restaurant that had several sayings on its walls. One that really hit home with me was this one. I hope that it will be something that you also enjoy.
"Life is not measured by the number of breaths we take but by the moments that take our breath away."
I wish you, my friend, many breathtaking moments in 2012.
May God bless you with the luxury of much love, many friends and great happiness.
Happy New Year!!!

A Bit of Winter Humor
I just heard the cutest thing today and I thought that since you might also need a chuckle or two, I should post it here! This is a true story that happened right here in Leoti.
A family that consists of three children, decided that they wanted to build a snowman this week. The children involved are 15, 10 and 3-years-old. The youngest one soon got tired of building in the cold outside so he chucked it in and went indoors. The older two siblings continued to create their snowman while a neighborhood dog watched on.
oon after the snowman was finished, the little boy went to the window and took a glance. Boy! Was he impressed! He called for his parents to come and take a look at the creation that he claimed total responsibility for building. LOL! His parents were quite happy with what they saw.
After awhile, the little boy decided that he would put on his coat and boots and go outside so that he could take a closer look at how "Frosty" looked on all sides. His family watched as a look of horror came across the 3-year-old's little face. He ran into the house and exclaimed to his family that the snowman was ALIVE! You're probably wanting to know where the child got this idea, right? Well, it seems as if the neighborhood dog eventually made its way to take a closer look also. While he was there, he pooped right next to Frosty. The little tyke is sticking to his story. Frosty is alive and well (and pooping) in their front yard.
I just thought that you might get a kick out of this story.

A Compliment
In my 50 years on this world of ours, I have attended more funerals than I would like to remember. Most of those funerals were in Wichita County. One thing that I am quite aware of is that Price and Sons Funeral Homes do a wonderful service for their people. Not all funeral homes do such a great job as they do.

A Tough and Sad Week
Ordinarily, I go months without attending a single funeral or memorial service. That is just fine with me. This week is different though. On Monday, I said good-bye to one of my very favorite aunts. Though she had not legally been a part of our family for 40 years, my love for her had never died and never will. I have very fond memories of her.
On Christmas, a lady whom I also thought highly of, also passed away. Today, I say good-bye to her. I imagine that I probably knew her most of my life. When I was in high school, I dated her oldest son and was able to forge a bond with her. Years later, we worked together at a local grocery store. Last December, she and her husband celebrated their golden wedding anniversary. I am sooo happy that they had a lovely celebration for their family and friends to be a part of. Though we were invited to attend, one of us was sick making this an impossibility. After that, I met Emma several times and we did what we did best--visit and laugh. I will miss those times tremendously.
I don't believe that there is ever "a good time" to lose a loved one. Having to do this during December must be as bad a time as humanly possible. From this time forward, the Christmas season will never be the same for anyone who has had to go through this. These people left behind require more prayers than others who lose their people at any other time of the year.
So anyway, I am hoping that after today, it will be many months before I have to attend another final good-bye service for a relative or friend.
Rest in peace, Aunt Pauline and Emma. We already miss you.

Some Great Words of Wisdom
A beautiful friend of mine posted this on FACEBOOK today. It really touched me, so you know what that means, don't you? It means that I just have to post it here for you to read and digest!
Did you know that the people who are usually the strongest are usually also the the most sensitive?
Did you know that the people who exhibit the most kindness are also the first to be mistreated and ridiculed?
Did you know that the one who takes care of others is usually the one who needs help the most?
And, finally...
What are the three hardest little things to say?
(Scroll down for the answers AFTER you think about it.)
1. I love you!
2. I am sorry...!
3. Please help me.
Makes you stop and think, doesn't it?
Thank you, T.L.T.!

Update on My Surgery
Originally, I was to have surgery to help with my epilepsy this Friday. Late last week, it had to be posponed because of paperwork issues. Today, our insurance company gave us the go ahead to have the surgery done. Unfortunately, we have had some complications that interfere with me having it done this week. That's fine. I've lived with seizures for almost 31 years now. I can wait a few more days to have the surgery. It will definitely be done sometime in early 2012.
Thank you to all of you who have been concerned about this! I ALWAYS appreciate your love and support!!!

Local Farmers
Our economy is tough on just about everyone now. One industry that has been under distress for several years is our farming. In addition to other problems, the high cost of fuel has just been devastating for our farmers who need it in order to operate their machinery, etc.
Even though that is the case, a bunch of our local farmers volunteered their own tractors, their time and their own fuel to help dig Leoti out and to help clear country roads. This is just plain extraordinary and the people of Wichita County thank you for all that you did to help get us moving again! This is by far NOT the first time these people have come to our rescue! They come out whenever we have heavy snow and are bogged down. They are true heroes.

A G-r-e-a-t B--I--G Thank-you!!!
Our family just wants to let our City of Leoti employees, under the very capable surpervision of Mr. Curtis Kreutzer, know that we are EXTREMELY appreciative of all of their outstanding work that they put out last week doing post-blizzard clean-up.
Over the past couple of days, we have gone to other Western Kansas towns for various bits of business. We were stunned to see that none of the towns we went through came anywhere close to matching how well our city streets and dirt roads have been maintained. In the two towns we drove in for awhile, we just about high centered several times and had difficulty getting out of deep holes in the ice. Our van probably needs its tires re-aligned now. Not always in recent years, have the crews scraped off the center snowdrift that was left after scrapers cleaned the lanes on either side. This has really driven me even nuttier than I already am. LOL! Not only is this a menace but once the daytime temperatures rise and allow melting of the snow barrier, the night's freezing temps appear and the melted snow turns to solid sheets of ice. Again, another dangerous situation. This has not been an issue in Leoti. Our Main and Broadway Streets are very clear. Go to other nearby towns in Western Kansas and you'll see that our main streets are the best around! Even side streets and dirt roads are in wonderful condition!
Our crew went to work soon after the snow began to drift in Leoti last Monday. They worked 24 hours a day until our streets and roads were safe and easily maneuverable. M-A-N-Y people who live in Leoti are very proud of all of the work that was done. THANK YOU!!!

Twas a Marvelous Christmas Here
This year, we were blessed with the company of Grandma, Mama, Leif, Lori and Lars, Lona Sue and Hunter, and Rob at our home for Christmas Eve. We all got in on the preparation of breakfast for that evening. We had Seaboard's Applewood bacon which is always a treat, scrambled eggs, fried potatoes, sausage gravy and biscuits. Everyone enjoyed the meal, but, most importantly, we enjoyed being together.
Christmas festivities were also held in our home. The same people joined us for the day except Stan was unable to be with us due to last week's blizzard. The drivers have worked every day and night since getting everything done. We hope that he will be able to join us for New Year's Eve and Day.
What a feast we had! All of us enjoyed a delicious brisket, mashed potatoes, gravy, cabbage and broccoli mixture, dinner rolls, stuffing, deviled eggs and salad. To top everything off, we had a delicious Danish rice pudding which is a customary dessert in Denmark for Christmas. A delicious dark cherry sauce is also prepared for topping this pudding. This tradition has been a part of our Christmases for the past several years. Everyone loves it! Inside the pudding, are two blanched almonds. Whoever finds these in their spoons, received special gifts. Stan almost always finds these in our family! Yesterday, I found the first one. For that, my gift was a candy cane. Less than a minute later, I discovered the second. The girls were thrilled because that meant that we won a really nice hot chocolate set that consists of two cups, hot chocolate mix, graham crackers, marshmallows, etc.
After lunch, we all gathered around the living room for opening gifts. Santa Claus was great to each and everyone of us again! Most importantly, we all engaged in a great deal of conversation and laughter. It is ALWAYS a blessing to get to be together. Thank You, Lord!!!
So Christmas of 2011 is history now. We are looking forward to many beautiful days until Christmas of 2012!
I hope that all of you had a blessed Christmas also!

Area Institutions and Services
If you have any banking business that needs to be done, remember that banks will be CLOSED on Monday, December 26th. In Leoti, they will be open regular hours on Friday.
Our local post office will also be closed on Monday. In Leoti, the post office will be open from 10-11:00 on Saturday morning.
Other package carriers are doing their best to get their packages delivered as quickly as possible.
This blizzard has really mixed things up. Right now, the City is cleaning snow out of our alleys so that garbage trucks can get through.
Most businesses in Leoti have managed to scrape their sidewalks the best that can be expected right now. We still need to be careful when we walk on them.
As for the rest of us, we just need to be patient. Life will resume to normal soon.

Leoti Streets
I just want to extend words of caution to anyone out and about today. Though the City and volunteers have done a fine job of opening streets for us, today's wind and snow have made them EXTREMELY slick. If you have to be out, please drive s-l-o-w-l-y and watch for other vehicles. I have already learned of a hit and run accident. It is quite possible that many other accidents have or will happen right now. We were out for the first time a little bit ago. People are driving like idiots out there. I don't know how many people we saw backing out of parking spaces without looking for traffic. We saw a very narrowly missed car accident on Main Street.
BE CAREFUL OUT THERE!!!

We have a possibility of more snow today. Winds are expected to pick up and blow what was left of Monday's storm and the freshly fallen snow. I just heard that conditions in the Ulysses, Kansas area have gotten worse. I would recommend that you check out sites or phone numbers that I posted yesterday or at least call someone at your destination before you leave.
Local streets are very slick again. If you have to be out there, be careful!

New Blau Tradition for Christmas
We've all heard the Christmas story that mentioned eating plum pudding. I'd never thought too much about it until this morning when Abigayle mentioned that she would like to eat some. It sounded like a good idea to me so I found this recipe. We'll be baking some for Christmas Eve at our house. Maybe you would like to try some too?
Plum Pudding
12 fresh or canned plums: drained, pitted and halved
1 cup white sugar
1/2 cup water
2 tablespoons tapioca
1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
------------------------------------------------------------------
Topping
2 1/4 cups Bisquick or Jiffy All-Purpose Baking Mix
3 tablespoons white sugar
2/3 cup milk
3 tablespoons melted margarine
--------------------------------------------------------------
Preheat oven to 350 degrees.
Place the plums, 1 cup of sugar, water, tapioca and cinnamon in a 2-quart baking dish. Stir well. Bake for 25 minutes in a regular oven or 15 minutes if you are going to use your microwave for this. Remove from heat.
In a medium bowl, stir the rest of the ingredients together. This will become a dough for shortbread. Spoon this dough over the top of the pudding mixture. Bake at 450 degrees for 10 minutes or until golden brown.
Allow to cool slightly before serving. Some people serve this pudding with vanilla ice cream or whipped cream. It is totally your choice.
Enjoy!

New Expectations for Package Deliveries Here
We received an email today about packages that we are expecting to be delivered to us by Federal Express. I was not surprised to see that there is an excellent chance that citizens of Zip Code, 67861, and many others around us will not be receiving their packages when they were supposed to. Parts of New Mexico, Oklahoma, Texas and Colorado are also going to be impacted by this. This, of course, is due to the blizzard that we have just endured. If you are expecting packages, I urge you to contact your carrier to see if this is going to affect you or not. Don't forget that this also impacts packages sent from these areas. I do not know how much of a delay we should be expecting.

Wichita County Mail
I just spoke with an employee of our post office about whether or not rural route customers need to pick our mail up at the post office now until country roads are in better shape. I was told that the mail carriers are going to try to deliver the mail today. However, they are not to go down roads that look dangerous. I TOTALLY understand and agree with this. If you would prefer that the carrier leave your mail at the post office so that you can pick it up, that is fine. For more information, please call 620.375.2813.
I am anticipating that our roads will be a mess for a long time to come. Right now, we are dealing wiht lots of snow. After it begins melting, we'll be dealing with lots of mud. The good thing is that we need all of the moisture that we can get.

Latest on Our Winter Weather
I just received information that our storm is officially over. We might have snow flurries but that is about all. Traffic on highways is very minimal. Some of our neighbors attempted to leave their property and go elsewhere. It was a futile attempt. They appear to be more stuck now than they were to begin with. If you don't have to be out and about, STAY PUT! A little bit of traffic is on the roads. What little there is, I've been told is moving extremely slowly. I am confident that the State, County and City departments are out there cutting through all of the drifts, etc. Just be patient. You'll be out soon enough.
This storm is a perfect example of how we must be ready for anything. I think that a good portion of us now realize that we need to have plenty of food stored up for events such as this.
I don't know how many stores in Leoti are open right now. I do know that Dollar General is open. Maybe if you have dogs and a sled, you might actually be able to get to it. LOL!!!
I seriously doubt that emergency workers in our area can get to houses to pick up anyone sick or injured very quickly. Stay inside. Working in the snow is a dangerous activity for many of us. It can definitely bring on heart attacks, etc. Is it really worth it to you to be out there scooping snow right now?
Stay safe!

Update on our Blizzard
It has been a tough one out there for most of Western Kansas and parts of Eastern Colorado, Northern Oklahoma, etc. For a couple of days, we were warned that a major storm was headed our way. Some people heeded this warning. Others chose not to. As for our family, Stan had to get to work. For the girls and I, we stayed at home where it was nice and dry. Not everyone was able to do that. People had to get to appointments across the state, etc.
Seaboard elected to cancel their night shift last night. It is a good thing that they did. Late yesterday afternoon, a truck ended up slamming into a 6 foot tall drift. Rescue efforts were established. Unfortunately, the weather was just too bad. The rescuer and the rescuee had no other choice but to sleep in their vehicles for the rest of the night. At this time, it is unknown as to when these men will be able to come back to town. (They are located in Kearney County which is straight south of us.)
I've heard reports of people being stranded in ditches all around us. One man called last night and told us that it took him an hour and 40 minutes to travel from Leoti to Scott City which is just a 24 mile trip. There are very possibly more people than anyone knows about who are still stuck somewhere out there.
Stan was able to get home safely last night. It took several minutes but he didn't have any sticking problems. This morning, he loaded up and headed for Seaboard Mill. He didn't even make it 1/4 of the way down our block before he was firmly stuck in a drift. A man from the mill came and picked him up and took him to work. So far, many drivers, etc are just waiting at the mill until roads are much clearer.
I received a weather alert a few minutes ago stating that we should have another 3-6 inches of snow this morning along with winds. Our blizzard warning has been dropped to a winter storm warning which is in effect to noon CST.
This is the deal, no one who does not have to be out there, needs to stay put. If you are at home, STAY THERE. If you are at work, STAY THERE. This has been classified as a very dangerous and deadly storm. You don't need to be one of the casualties. Since the storm began yesterday afternoon, I have heard no sounds of tractors, etc. I assume that we will be hearing tractors anytime now. Leoti has a good number of farmers who donate their own machinery and fuel to break through drifts so that our ability to get from one place to the next can be a reality. I just want to say "THANK YOU" to all of them. Of course, we also have a great City crew who will also be hard at work.
It was quite possible that people in the blizzard-struck areas would lose all electricity. In our case, I didn't take any chances. Though we did not have much laundry, I did it yesterday just to be on the safe side. If the power was lost, it could have been days before it could have been restored. Leoti never lost any power as far as I know. We also have a couple of bird feeders here. Yesterday morning, we filled them to the top and hung them back up outside. The wind was just too strong later in the day for the birds to sit on them. We took a margarine bowl and filled it up with bird seed and put it out on the back deck. A bunch of birds took advantage of our hospitality.
On a bright note, people are thinking that this blizzard just might be what we have been looking for to break the drought in so many places. South of Wichita County was still listed in the drought.
Be careful out there.

Paint Swap
Over and over again, you have seen me post about various paint projects I have had. As a result of that, it seems that I usually have an excess of paint in our storage. I got to thinking that since I know that I am not the only person who has paint cans lying around, maybe we could offer what we have to others. Right now, I have a practically full gallon can of interior blue paint. It is about the same color as denim. Not long ago, I gave some other paint away. I'll try to dig deeper today and see what else I might have that you might want. If you have any cans of paint you want to get rid of, please send me an email to slblaus@gmail.com . If you want me to post it on my blog, I can either post your phone number, if you want me to, or else I will leave directions for them to send details to me. Once I get it, I will forward it on to you.
This is just a small thing that we can do to keep waste from just building up. By trading paint out, someone can take the paint that we no longer need, and use it for themselves.
We don't need to stop at just swapping paint. If you have furniture, clothes, books, artwork, toys, curtains or other window coverings, rugs, carpet, etc that you would like to swap, sell or give away, please send your email to my same email address that I just mentioned.

Me
I went to the emergency room late yesterday morning. My pain had finally reached the point that I needed to get some kind of relief--the sooner, the better. The doctor gave me two shots and a prescription for steroids. Within a short time, the pain had lessened considerably. I was even able to sell tickets at the theatre last night! I am also happy to say that I enjoyed a very restful night. I am definitely on the road to recovery again! When I went to the hospital, the doctor tried to check my reflexes. My arms were just fine but my legs responded like a non-living person--absolutely no reflexes. Evidentally, the swelling was just too much.

I have not been feeling well for quite some time so I have not been able to take too many tours of town to see all that Leotians have offered, but what I have seen, has just been beautiful!
For the past couple of years, our family has looked forward to parking at the Ellis and Janice Rewerts home so that we could see their lights dance to music of Christmas songs. Just in case you have not seen this yet, go to the former junior high school and turn south. Their house is located just 2 blocks away (one block south of the Methodist Church). They have posted a sign in their front yard that tells you what radio station you can go to in order to be able to hear the songs.
Other places you just have to see at night are the Kyle and Heather (Harkness) Leimkuhler house on the 900 block of North Third Street. Matt and Marti (Lewis) Engel have also gone all out this year. I cannot begin to tell you where all of the hot spots are this year. There's a bunch. Just get out some evening and take a look around town.
My pain got to th point today that I couldn't take it anymore so Leif and Leighlyn took me to the hospital. I had a couple of shots and bought some steroids for the next few days. Soon I should be much better and ready to go ut and see more of the town all lit up to welcome Santa Claus here.
The Wichita County Schools begin their Christmas Vacation tomorrow. Please remember that it is very likely that more children will be out and about for the next couple of weeks. Please use care when you're driving. Thank you!!!

You and I Can Help
in soooo many ways.
From 1989 to 1995, Stan and I opened our home and our hearts to foster children. Kids from all over the state of Kansas lived with us. During that time, we met some of the best people out there. Each one held very sad memories in their souls. Each person was different. They may have endured and survived the exact same types of abuse as the next foster child, but each was different. They handled their abuse in different ways. While one wanted to go out and punish the world for what had been done to him/her, the next one was determined to move forward and make a better life for their future children. Some had absolutely no support from their natural families while others were in contact with grandparents, uncles, aunts, siblings, etc. Most of the parents were willing to change so that they could get their children back. Others didn't care.
The thing that most of us don't know, or should I say, don't want to know, is that parents out there dish out a battery of various types of abuse. Here they are:
Physical
Emotional
Mental
Sexual
I remember one of the social workers whom we worked with, told me one day that in most cases, only one type of abuse is evident. In one family whom we helped, every last kind of abuse was the name of the game.
Each parent physically abused each child.
Both parents beat on each other.
Both parents told each of the children that they were stupid, lazy, mattered for nothing, was ugly...
Though the parents had enough money to at least purchase a small gift for birthdays and Christmas, they chose not to. Instead, the children dreaded birthdays because no treats were ever taken by the parents to school with their child's classmates. No birthday parties were ever held. And probably worse that all of that, the kids dreaded going back to school after Christmas because show and tell would take place. Everyone else had gifts to boast about but that child had nothing. This was one of the biggest reasons that I had created Christmas Children.
These particular parents were not guilty of sexual abuse. One of their sons dealt that out.
I could go on and on about the tragedies that foster children live but I am sure that you already get the point. Chances are that, at one point or another, you have known at least one foster child in your lifetime.
This week, CBS's BOLD AND THE BEAUTIFUL is spotlighting the obstacles that current and past foster children face in their lives. They've even asked real foster children to come onto the show and describe what abuse has done to them individually. I thank the backbone of B and B for doing this. Please watch these episodes this week so that you can be more educated on this matter and learn how you can help. I even learned that 2/3 of all foster kids grow up and end up in jail. One family we helped consisted of 8 children. Out of those kids, 3 of them went to prison. One is still there. Out of the other five, only one has gone on to lead a "normal" live. That person had to leave his/her hometown and go somewhere where he/she could start all over. That same person has managed to be quite successful. Though this person went through 2 unsuccessful marriages, he is very happy with his third and is raising a couple of children in a loving, caring and abuse-free home. The others struggle each and every day in one way or another. It is so, so sad...
We can help foster children from around the nation by going to the following website that THE BOLD AND THE BEAUTIFUL recommended to see how.
www.unitedfriends.org
Go there and read. You'll be in for an eye-opening experience.
On that website, you can
1. Make a donation to help.
2. Learn of upcoming charity events.
3. Purchase Christmas gift cards for current foster children. Some of them won't be getting anything without our help.
4. Find out how your company can become involved.
These are just a very few things that we can do. I urge you to go to the website and check it out for yourself.
I also recommend that you consider becoming a foster parent. You don't have to be wealthy or have a fancy home in order to do this. As a matter-of-fact, foster parents are given an allowance which is to be used for the food, clothing, etc that your foster child will need while in your care. Most importantly, this is your chance to reach out and connect with someone who really needs your love and support. In some cases such as ours, foster children go up for adoption. Maybe you can make your foster child a legal and permanent member of your family.
I think that I've said enough. I kicked the ball to you. Now it is up to you to decide what to do with it next.

Surgery Pre-Scheduled
I heard from the people who will be doing my surgery that will help me with my seizures. As of right now, we are planning on the surgery on Friday, December 30th.

It is over!!!
Because I am now 50, the high incidence of cancer in my family and the wide assortment of prescription drugs that I take every day, it was highly recommended that I have a colonoscopy. Believe me, I put this procedure off just as long as I possibly could. LOL! Finally, I faced the music and decided that I might as well take the bull by its horns and bend over. Ha! Ha! (Actually, you really don't bend over. Just lie on your side.)
Through the years, whenever I've listened to the people who have had colonscopies, I got the impression that this is a procedure to be feared. All in all, I finally decided that if I was brave enough to have open heart surgery, I should be able to "bare" my soul(no, my posterior end) to the world. My appointment was early this morning so that meant that I needed to prepare for it starting early yesterday evening. The surgeon had called in my prescription for this medicine to our local pharmacy. I went to pick it up yesterday. As soon as the technician put it on the counter, I about died. It was a H-U-G-E clear container that held powders at the bottom. Once at home, I was to fill it up with lukewarm water and shake it up. I remembered saying "Oh, My God!!!" as soon as I saw this jug. Everyone around me laughed also. In case you are not familiar with colonoscopies, everything that was in that jug and enough water to fill it up would have to be drunk in a timely manner. That doesn't sound so bad except for two things.
1. This solution tastes anything but good.
2. We've all heard that anything that goes up, has to come down. In this case, everything that goes down comes out also. The coming out is not smooth either, I might add. You end up running for the closest bathroom facility until you finally give in and elect to just sit in the bathroom reading magazines until your next bout with the toilet. That's what I did.
Because my blood needed to be thickened, I had to go off of my blood thinners and had been been having 2 injections of medication in my stomach every evening since last Tuesday. So Stan took me to the hospital to get that done. We came right home and I began drinking...and drinking...and drinking. I had to drink 8 ounces of this yukky stuff every 10 minutes from about 6:00 to 9:00. Finally at 9:00, half of the bottle had been drunk. I didn't have to start drinking the second half until about 5:00 this morning. I had a relatively uneventful night but was not ready to drown myself in the rest of this liquid so early in the morning, but I did it anyway. Again, I lived in the bathroom for most of two hours. Because of the fact that I was having this done in Scott City, I worried that I might have to stop along the 24 mile distance from our home to the hospital. Evidentally, there was nothing left in that particular section of my body. Stan didn't even have to stop once along the way. Thank You, God!!! It was a very foggy night with temperatures just barely above the freezing point. Stopping for Mother Nature would not have been a good deal. Ha! Ha!
So, anyway, we arrive at the hospital and I was checked in. Soon after that, nurses appeared to get me dressed in one of those oh-so-modest nightgowns, poke me for IVs, draw blood, ask questions, etc., etc., etc. All were very nice so that definitely helped me. Getting dressed was the really bad part. I look terrible in a nightgown that covers me on all sides. Nightgowns that leave my worst side open to the rest of the world, is even worse. LOL! To make matters even worse, I was sharing a room with another lady. By the time that I was dressed--or undressed--however you look at it, I had to make a few more trips back and forth to the shared toilet. I did my best to hold my IV tubes out from under my feet with one hand. The other hand was responsible for keeping my exposed tail end covered with the cloth that did not cover my entire body. I was not very successful. I felt so bad for the other patient in the room. She'll probably have nightmares for years to come. Man nor beast should have to view a sight like that. LOL!
As soon as I was ready for surgery, I was allowed to sit in bed and just read my very first edition of HGTV magazine. (By the way, if you love interior design and decorating like I do, you just have to get this magazine! It is SUPERB!!! Soon, the surgical nurse arrived to take me to the surgery room. Again my neighbor had to endure me going from my regular bed to the bed on wheels. I just hope she hasn't gone blind as a result of what I put her through this morning... A few minutes later, I was transferred from that gurney to the surgical bed. People were all around me. If you are obese as I am, whenever you are put in a position such as this, it reminds us of vultures circling for the kill. Ha! I just want to close my eyes and disappear. In this case, all of these people were quite kind. Shortly after arriving, I was asked to turn over on my side so that my posterior could be viewed easily. At about the same time, my anesthesiologist hooked me up to oxygen which was "laced" with sleepy time medication. I was out very quickly. The next thing that I knew, a nurse was trying to waken me. About 20 minutes later, I was back in my hospital room waiting for Stan to pick me up and take me home.
I had the kind of results everyone wants. Everything was totally normal. There was nothing to be concerned about. As soon as I got home, I was to take a double dose of blood thinners which I was only too happy to take. I had some mild chest pains yesterday that signaled that my blood was getting too thick to pass safely through my mechanical heart valve. I am now done with having to take more shots until later this month when we prepare for my next surgery.
The reason I am "baring" all of this to you is because I want you to know that this procedure is not nearly as evil as many would have you to believe. It is basically painless. The worst part is definitely having to drink that solution. My daughter, Abigayle, helped me with that though. She would come over and hold my nose shut while I drank from a straw. It helped! I also recommend that you put your mixed solution into your refrigerator for a few hours before you start drinking it. I also suggest that you use a straw to suck it up. By doing this, you don't taste this so much. Just know that someone will have to give you a ride home because you are not allowed to drive again for at least 12 hours.
I am relieved that this is over and that my results were good. Ready to get yours scheduled?

Update On Lynn
I met with my cardiologist on Friday. Everything went well. He mentioned that my heart sounds good. To make sure, I will be having a series of cardiac tests on the 30th. I expect that all results will be positive for me.
For a week now, I have been going to the hospital to have two shots injected into my abdomen. I will return there again tonight. Early tomorrow morning, we will be going out of town for more tests. We should return tomorrow.
As of this morning, I have not yet learned when or where my surgery will be scheduled. As I mentioned earlier, we hope to have it done before the end of this month.

Ice Storm
I am receiving reports about the possibility of an ice storm headed to Northwest Kansas. The last that I knew, it looks like no counties east of Greeley County are in that area. I recommend that we keep an eye on the situation just in case.

Update
I met with my new neurologist this morning. We had a good appointment that was filled with information that I have never had before. My "daydream seizures" began when I was still in grade school. In 1981 when I was 19, I experienced my first major seizure. Since then, I would guess that I have had well over 1,000 seizures. Through the years, I have tried one seizure drug after another. Some worked fairly well, some worked most of the time and the one that I have been on for almost 10 years, has worked the best. Still, seizures manage to break through anyway. I had just taken it for granted that that was how life would always be for me. You take it or you leave it. I chose to take it.
For over 20 years, I have dealt with depressions more often than what "normal" people have. I blamed them all on my bi-polar disorder. Today, I learned that that was wrong. Today, my doctor explained much to me about these health disorders. Until today, I had no idea that most people who have seizures also develop frequent depressions. I also learned that there is hope for people like me.
The help is surgery and my doctor and other staff members are arranging for me to have this surgery that should improve my health (and my life) tremendously. Our goal is to have my surgery completed within the next two weeks.
My surgery will involve a disc being placed under the skin. There will be two incisions. One will be on the left side of my neck while the other is below my collarbone on the left side of my chest. Wiring that bends will connect the chest generator to the left Vagus Nerve in my neck. The generator will transmit stimulation to the nerve which will then be sent to my brain 24 hours every day. For some, this stimulant will cause an end to all seizure activity by itself. But, as I understand it, most people will still need to stay on oral medications. Many of those people will not need to take as much of the oral meds though.
Inside the generator is a magnet. On my left arm, I will wear what basically looks similar to a black wrist watch or I will need to wear an apparatus on my belt. Another magnet will be located in it. Whenever I receive my natural alerts that I am about to have a seizure, I will align the wristband to my generator in my chest for just a couple of seconds. By doing this, additional stimulant will be sent directly to my brain. If I am unable to unite the magnets, someone with me can do it. The result will be the seizure will just abort, or it will be shortened and/or the effects of this seizure will be minimized. The recovery time after the seizure will be shortened also.
By having this surgery, not only should my seizures be improved, but I will also notice that I am more alert and my moods should be much more leveled out.
Every time a person has a seizure, damage is being done to the brain. If a person only has one seizure in his lifetime, there will be a certain amount of damage done. The more seizures a person has, the more damage that is done. In my case, I was blessed with my father's ability to do math problems quickly in my head. Family and friends challenged me to doing math problems with them. I would only do the problems in my head while they used a calculator to see who came up with the correct answer first. Most of the time, I won. Over the past year, I have noticed that it is taking me a lot more time to come up with the correct answer. Sometimes, I need a pencil and paper to work the problem out. This has been tough for me to accept.
It used to be that once I met someone, I almost always remembered the name, face and a bit of their personal history. Now there are times when a name rings a bell or a face looks familiar but I cannot put the two together. The person's individual history is sometimes completely scrambled. Again, this has stressed me.
I am also receiving complaints that a person told me this or that. A few hours, or in some cases, a few minutes, later, I have completely lost this information never to be found again.
Over the past couple of months, I began to fear that I might have Alzheimers, a fate I surely did not want to have to face.
I discussed all of this with my doctor today. Tests were done and now I have answers to my questions. The great thing is that I do NOT have Alzheimers. I have some major brain damage that cannot be repaired. But for people like me, this isn't the end of the road. Many of us no longer have to settle with having seizure activity followed by more brain damage. In many cases, we can have this surgery which should greatly improve our seizures.
The surgery will not provide a "cure" right away. For most patients, this therapy will take anywhere from a few months to one or two years to provide full relief. Once that is attained, better control over my seizures, stronger memory and increased alertness will be available to me.
This is what we are currently facing that most people won't have to. Because of the fact that I am having another surgery on Tuesday, I am requiring two shots of blood thickeners every evening so that I don't bleed out during or after the operation. Ordinarily, my surgeon would tell me when it is safe to go back on my oral blood thinners after the surgery plus I will have to have shots of intensive blood thinners given to my stomach area for several days until my blood has reached the optimal thinness. But since I need to have this surgery, we are hoping to have it soon while my blood is thicker and therefore safer for surgery. So, at this time, I am praying that this second surgery will be done soon after Tuesday's operation. But at the same time, I am a bit anxious about having thicker blood for a longer periond of time because it could cause blood clots to form in my mechanical heart valve that could not only ruin the valve but it could also result in heart attacks or strokes.
One detail that we just learned is that I will not be able to drive a vehicle for at least 6 months. I will be completely reliant on other drivers or I will walk wherever I need to go. I am not looking forward to this inconvenience but a lot more walking might be the best thing for me all the way around.
So, anyway, Stan and I are quite pleased with the knowledge we gained in regards to my seizure activity and a highly proven treatment for the seizures and prevention of any further brain damage. We praise the Lord for blessing us with the new technology. This particular therapy was not available before 1997. It looks like this will be around for a good long time too. Autopsies have been done on patients who have had this therapy to see if the therapy caused any kinds of damage to the person's body. In all cases, NO damage was done.
There are some side effects that might go away as time passes. They include temporary hoarseness, changes in the tone of my voice, coughing, tickling sensation in my throat and shortness of breath. Believe me, I am very willing to accept these side effects if it means that my seizures might improve and my future brain damage could be minimized. Pressure will always remain where the generator is implanted. One thing that I can already see is that I will be able to return to my former public activities including such things as going back to church, etc. About two years ago, I had a major seizure while I was in church. It was so bad that an ambulance had to be called. There have been many other times that seizures have broken out while I was in public areas. Needless to say, I have been reluctant to venture out as often as I once did.
Now, tomorrow, Stan will take me to see my cardiologist in Dodge City. More tests will be done there also. I'll let you know how they turn out. I expect only positive things in regards to my heart.
Thank you for your prayers!

Ice
If you live in the state of Kansas, you might want to keep an eye on the weather. From what I saw on the noon news today, we stand a good chance of having ice later this week.
I was very thankful to see the national map today that outlined what kind of a winter we should have. Most of Western Kansas is in the area where a normal amount of moisture is expected. As you know, we've had a drought for the past several years. The moisture will be readily accepted around here! Unfortunately, Eastern Kansas is expected to be drier than normal.

Wichita County Junior/Senior High School Christmas Program
is tonight at 7:30 in the high school auditorium. All are welcome to attend. This is the first program that Mr. Allen Brockmeier has put together in Leoti all by himself. What a task that is! Mr. Brockmeier will do an amazing job of bringing it all together. It promises to be an exceptional evening for all in attendance.

A Little Bit From Me
I am sorry that I have not been on here much lately. There has been a lot going on in my life recently and finding the time to write has been difficult. I continue to have some health issues. I'll be seeing one specialist on Thursday and another specialist on Friday. Tests will be done at those times. I also have a major test scheduled for the 13th. I could use your help in regards to these. As I've mentioned before, I require blood thinning medications each and every day to protect myself from having blood clots which could cause strokes or heart atacks. I only require this medication because of my mechanical heart valve. The last time that I was able to take my coumadin was last night. I can have none of it again until after surgery on the 13th. At least for the next 7 days, I will require shots of Luvinox in my stomach each night. Needless to say, the next week will be touchy for me. Once surgery is over next Tuesday, my surgeon will tell me how soon I can resume with my coumadin. If all goes well, it might be as early as that evening. In the meantime, could you please say a prayer or two for me? Thank you!!!
You might think that I would be totally nervous and apprehensive about the latest problems that I am facing but that is not the case. The year, 2002, was quite a year for me. In April of that year, God blessed us with the birth of Abigayle. In May and November, I had 2 major operations. All went well with both surgeries. Since then, I have faced facts that I will never have good health again but I am much better off than many poor souls out there. I have an AMAZING support system that consists of a loving family and a host of friends. Without my Loving God and them, I don't know where I would be today... Once the cardiologist and neurologist have done their tests, we'll know what the problem is and we'll get it fixed. It may be as simple as a change of medicine. Fortunately, we should have all of our ducks in a row in the next several days. That is very reassuring.
Today brought some sad news to our family. Our son and daughter-in-law, Adam and Mel, received the news that they have suffered a miscarriage. Please pray for them and keep them in your hearts. We were all very excited for this baby to arrive. For some reason, God has different plans. We accept them and continue onward. Hopefully, they will be parents soon. Given the fact that Stan and I were childless for so many years, we can understand the pain and anguish that they are going through right now.
I just want to thank each and every one of you who have blessed us with your love and thoughts as we have gone through this latest saga with my health. Your support is gratefully accepted and appreciated.

Upcoming Movie at The Star in Tribune
I just received news that the long-awaited movie, COURAGEOUS, is on its way to Tribune. Here is a brief description of this film that was released on September 30th, 2011.
This is classified as Action/Adventure/Drama and is rated PG-13 for some violence and drug content.
Synopsis: Four men-one calling: to serve and protect. These four police officers are top notch in their careers, unfortunately, their children may not rank them so highly for their performances as fathers. When tragedy hits home, these four men begin facing their hopes, fears, faith and their fathering. Is it possible that this emergency could help these fathers grow closer to God...and to their children?
Stars include Alex Kendrick, Renee Jewell, Ken Bevel, Robert Amaya, Kevin Downes, etc.

I'm Baaack!
As I told you earlier this week, it would be awhile before I would be writing on my blog. I decided to move our computer armoire from our living room to our bedroom. Though there was not much distance involved, LOL, Stan did not have time to move it down our hallway and into our bedroom until just this afternoon. And, you know me! I have N~O patience and since I needed to finish painting behind the armoire, I just pushed it into our dining room. I think that this is just where we should have had our computer all along. For one thing, it took up space where it was but most importantly, while we are spending time in the living room, we'll all be doing the same thing instead of one of us messing on the internet. Given the fact that I am starting to write again, it'll be best to have it in the bedroom where it will be more quiet.
So while I've been off of here, I have been quite busy. One day was needed to finsh the second coat of paint. Another couple of days was needed for compiling my court reporting information that I needed to get in to the credit bureau. In other words, I have been busy since we last spoke on here.
There were a lot of us at the WCHS Aunditorium on Thursday evening in honor of the elementary school's Christmas music program. To sum it up in one 10-lettered word, I would choose D-E-L-I-G-H-T-F-U-L to describe the entertainment that we received that evening. Mr. Allen Brockmeier and Mrs. Jayme Brown-Bishop are outstanding musicians who are doing so well with the youth of Wichita County. It was just perfect for getting the audience into the Christmas mood!
There have been some changes in recent years to our elementary school Christmas programs. Back before the dinosaurs completely left Wichita County, I was an 8th grader here. At that time and for many years later, the junior high program was always seen during the afternoon of the last day of school before Christmas vacation began. To this day, I have no idea why this was a normal occurance. Many working parents, grandparents, etc were not able to attend this program because it was held during the normal work day. Now things are MUCH better. The junior high and the high school students entertain all of us on the same evening every year. Formerly, the elementary and junior high audiences sat on less-than-comfy metal cheers in the grade school and junior high gymnasiums. Now, the Christmas and Spring programs are always held in the high school auditorium where the seats are very comfortable and the acquostics are much better.
Please don't miss the high school and junior high Christmas program on Tuesday, December 6th, at 7:00. This will be the first year that one music director will be in charge of both, the instrumental and the vocal, departments. Mr. Brockmeier will be the director and I am quite confident that this will be a stellar performance just like Wichita County has been known for the past few decades. As always, EVERYONE is invited to attend. There is no cost.
Getting into the Christmas mood is really easy today. During the night, we began receiving some freezing drizzle. After that, rain developed following by very heavy snow. Stan had to drive his truck in the storm thiss morning. He said that the snow was so wet that it was difficult to keep his windshield clean. That moisture is just what we need around here though. Thank You, God!!! During the day, snow fell off and on, winds blew once in awhile which caused some good-sized drifts. For less than a hour this afternoon, we lost all electricity. There was no reason to fret. We have an outstanding crew for Wheatland Electric. Thank you, Wheatland, for getting out there and making repairs when the rest of us preferred to stay at home where it was nice and warm!
I will not be doing much writing on my blog late next week. Stan will be taking me to meet with my neurologist on Thursday. While we are there, a battery of tests will be done to determine what it is going on with me. On Friday, Stan will take me to my cardiologist for that appointment also. At one point on those days, I will have a CT Scan from the top of my head to my knees. I need to have these every two years to look for new aneurisyms. I had one in my heart in 2002. The surgeon was able to remove it and replace it with a mechanical heart valve and tubing before the aneurisym ruptured which could have been deadly.
Well I need to get up and get busy so I better close for now. I wish you all a lovely winter weekend!

Some Information
About a month ago, I finished putting the first coat of paint on our living room walls. I planned on doing the second coat right away but life happened and I never got back to doing it until this morning. Right now, most of our living room furniture is shoved into the middle of our living room. Once the paint is done on that side of the room, the furniture will go back into place and then the furniture on the other side of the room will go into the middle of the room. There will be one exception though. Right now, our computer armoire is in the living room but that is going to change. I am going to move it into our bedroom today. We have a cubbyhole that is between our bedroom and our closet. It will be the perfect place for the armoire from now on.
I am telling you all of this because I want you to know that I may not be back online for a few days if Stan has any problems getting the internet reconnected back there. So don't think I've decided to shut down my blog. I'll be back very soon.
Thank you!!!

A Wonderful Evening
We just got home from Tribune, or should I say a beautiful Christmas Village, a little while ago. The four of us took Grandma and a friend of Abigayle's to watch MR. POPPER'S PENGUINS. The fine folks at the Star Theatre allowed anyone who wanted to watch the movie to watch it completely free-of-charge! Each person was also given a bag of free popcorn and a cup of free soda pop! This was our first time to watch this particular movie and we loved every single second of it. Wouldn't it be great if more heartwarming movies like this were made much more often? There was absolutely not one thing that any person should have been offended by in this show. If you have not already seen this soon-to-be Jim Carrey classic, please make it a point to watch it soon. Our family would just like to thank Christy Hopkins and all of her friends who provided such a wonderful evening for all who attended tonight's movie!
Tribune was beautiful! Christmas lights seemed to be everywhere. It was difficult to find a parking place because so many people had come out to take in this dazzling event. And, yes, Cinderella's horsedrawn coach was at the Christmas Open House tonight! Something tells me that it will magically appear at Leoti's Christmas Open House tomorrow (Tuesday) evening!
Don't forget that the evening will start out with a Christmas Parade on Main Street. Most of Leoti's stores will be open and offering specials on their merchandise. A lot of them will also be offering some Christmas refreshments!
See you at the Open House!!!

Blau Construction
Our son has just updated his business website. I would like to post its address here.
www.blauconstruction.com
Adam lives in Scott City but does work in nearby counties also. I urge you to check out his website. You just might decide that you have some work that you would like Adam to do for you. Adam is known for his affordable prices and job satisfaction.
Check out his photos that he has posted of other jobs that he has done. The fencing photos came from a large job he just completed about a month ago.

Christmas Children
For the past two years, I sponsored what I called "Christmas Children" in Leoti. A good number of people joined my family and I as we provided gifts to children here, whom without our help, would not have had any Christmas gifts. It was a great joint affair and a bunch of families appreciated our help.
There are still a good amount of children in Wichita County who will be doing without this Christmas. Unfortunately, I will no longer be sponsoring this movement. Several reasons are to blame for this. My current health struggles make it a great difficulty right now. Because of the fact that kids still need our help, I would like for you to contact our local churches if you would like to contribute or if your family is in need. You might also contact Leoti's Thrift Shop which is open on Tuesdays and Fridays.
Every year, the gals at the Thrift Shop welcome good, clean dolls that they can spruce up, if necessary, and get to the appropriate families. The Thrift Shop always welcomes other good toys, small and large, and all sizes of clothing in good repair. If you have any toys that are in good condition or clothing that you no longer wear, please donate these to local thrift stores. Remember that one man's trash is another man's treasure. This is especially true at Christmastime. Make your charity a learning experience for your children and grandchildren. Have them be a part of the donation process. Explain to them that there are bunches of children out there who would love to have the toys and clothes that your children no longer use. Allow them to go to the shop where you are going to leave your donations of toys, clothes or cash. Being a part of this will encourage your child to do more to help their fellow man--or child. Everyone will be better for it.
Our local churches gather food for Christmas to be given to our people who need some help this year. Please contribute to this fund also.
My family and I are disappointed that we can not keep Christmas Children going this year but I am sure that you understand.
Thank you for anything and everything that you give to the less fortunate!
