Have you been by the new school domes lately? Progress is definitely being made. Walls are now going up. From the street, it looks like about all that is missing is the sheet rock. New windows which have been constructed to look like the former junior high's windows are now in place in the former vo-ag building. They really look sharp! Most of the work being done now seems to be on the interior which is a good deal considering the fact that the Western Kansas winter is not far in our future. (Thank goodness!!! I am sick and tired, LITERALLY, of this heat!!!)
A concrete walkway has now been poured that allows students to get from the high school to the lunchroom in the junior high building. I am unclear on this but as I remember, the dome that is on the east side of the junior high block will house the new gym and another lunchroom which will be seperated from the original lunchroom by the kitchen.
Anyway, sometime when you are out and about, take a gander at the building project. It is very interesting. According to our school calendar, plans are made that the three moving days will be on May 23rd, 24th and 25th.

YAY for the Wichita County Sheriff's Department!!!!!!!!!!!!
The school bus came too early for our little angel this morning. As soon as she was ready for school, I gave her a ride. That allowed me to witness something that made me extremely proud of our Sheriff!
At approximately 8:00, Abigayle and I were driving eastward on the street between Mel's Foodliner and the museum. Of course, as I drove I was looking towards the east. Seemingly out of nowhere, a little pick-up plunged from the alley just to the west of Hi Plains Motel and actually ended up on the sidewalk of the school just to the south of the office doors.
In recent years, a portion of the curb was removed just to the south of the grade school's office. So now, the surface is smooth from the street to the office doors. It allows handicapped people to exit their vehicles and proceed into the school without the difficulty of getting over the curb. Ordinarily, a mishap such as this would not have been a problem. The driver of this pick-up realized that he had cut his turn a little long. He slammed on his brakes approximately 10 feet from the front door before shifting his vehicle into reverse. Once back on the street, he headed westwardly.
Sheriff Randy Keeton had just turned on to this street from a block away when this idiot pulled this stunt that could have been fatal had someone been on this sidewalk at the time. Immediately, Randy's lights went on to pull this man over. No go or should I say, No stop? The driver drove for almost 3 blocks before he parked his vehicle behind a business on Main Street.
I am proud of Randy for seeing this maneuver and doing something about it! Most parents drop their kids off in front of the gym doors now because the students are to congregate every morning with their classmates in the gym before the teachers lead them to their classrooms. However, there is still a good amount of parents who let them off at the office doors. All of the school buses unload where this maniac drove up onto the sidewalk.
Thank You, God, for protecting our children this morning!!!

Silage Harvest
Silage harvest in Western Kansas has begun. From these uneducated eyes, the crops just look beautiful. I hope that they really are. I have noticed that I am not seeing as many sunflower fields as in the past. Maybe I am just not around the areas where they are planted.
During silage harvest as wheat harvest, we all need to be especially watchful as we drive.

Onion--Burgers
We were just watching the TV show MAN VERSUS FOOD. It is a show that spotlights various foods throughout the world. A great deal of humor is also sprinkled in along the way. In tonight's episode, Adam, the show's host, went to Oklahoma City to a cafe where onion-y hamburgers are the way to go. The owners of the cafe do not use spatulas to turn over their hamburger patties. Instead, they buy brick mortar spatulas that are used for applying fresh mortar between bricks. Of course, the ones that they use have never been used for their intended purpose. These spatulas are considerably wider and longer than most everyday spatulas. They are also very firm so that the chef has more control over his hamburger patty when he is "smashing" it down.
Anyway, you take a ball of hamburger that is approximately 1/3 of a pound. Roll it in your hand until it is a ball. Then lay it out on your hot grill. Immediately smash it with the spatula. Allow to fry on that side for a few seconds. Flip to the other side. Now, you are ready for a handful of raw shredded onions. Smother the hamburger patty with these onions. Again, smash the onions into your patty with your mortar tool. In just a few minutes, flip to the original side. Allow your onion-burger to cook until it is done to your liking.
Place your onion-burger onto the bottom of your hamburger bun. Add any condiments that you desire, catsup, mustard, pickles, mayo... Top it off with the top bun.
Now, THAT'S an onion burger. Mmm,mmm good!!!

Lori--Sunday Morning
Lori continues to be a patient at Hays Medical Center, She continues not to feel good which is quite difficult to take since she wants to get home to her family as soon as possible. Her blood thinning is still not where it needs to be. As of yesterday, it still was not to the half-way point of where it needs to be to rid her body of the blood clots. She is now battling depression which I think that all of us can understand very easily. Most of us do not get any big bang out of staying in hospitals. Lori has received excellent care and is VERY impressed with her doctors, nurses, physical therapists, etc. She could not be any happier with the care that she has received. Still, she is almost 3 hours away from home and cannot see her friends and family as she normally can.
We are SOOOOOOOOOOO happy that Ron and Pam Blau live in Hays. They make as many trips as possible to visit Lori. It has been wonderful for all of them! When Ron and Pam lived in Leoti, they shared a very good relationship with Lori. Now, they have gotten to renew that friendship. This next Saturday, September 4th, is Ron and Pam's son, Josh's, wedding in Hays. Alll of us are looking forward to attending the wedding. We are hoping that Lori is out of the hospital so that she can join us there for all of the festivities.
Please continue to pray for Lori and us!
Thank you!!!

RATS!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Just spoke with some people today who told me that they are having to fight to keep rats out of their home and garage. Folks, I mean RATS--not mice. They told me that they are not alone. Without telling you who these people are, I will tell you that they live somewhere in the southwest corner of Leoti. Rats have been living in the fields close to them but are trying to move indoors now. I would ASSUME that that is another sign for the winter yet to come.
So far, rat traps have been set out.
If you are also plagued with these nasty varments, I recommend that you contact the City of Leoti Office at 375-2341.
Rats are very dangerous pests. They spread disease wherever they go and can carry rabies.

According to Kansas law, farm equipment has the right-of-way on roads and highways. For the most part, I understand that. I do, however, find it disgusting when these over-sized vehicles proceed down the middle of the roadways and do not allow other vehicles to pass them. I am not alone. Other people have also told me that that is aggravating.
Today, my girls and I went to the Seaboard Mill to do my cleaning. While we were finishing up, Stan got back to town after delivering his last load of feed. We all left the mill's parking lot at the same time. Meanwhile, someone driving a very new John Deere combine left Hwy 96 and turned on to the road headed North. As soon as he had completed his turn, he saw our two vehicles coming towards him. Instead of all but running us off of the road as many other people would have done, he pulled off of the road and entered the ESE Alcohol Plant property and remained there motionlessly until we had passed him and went on towards the highway. As soon as we were safely off the road, he moved his combine back on to the road and proceeded towards the north.
I wish that I could tell you his name here but neither Stan nor I were able to get a good look at him. We would like to let him and the others like him know that these acts do not go unnoticed. We greatly appreciate these gestures!

PLEASE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Today, people are busily going about their lives and don't always take the time to make sure that their kids are aware of "the rules". We always think that the bad things are going to happen to someone else--not us. Of course, we're absolute idiots to go with those thoughts and not do whatever it takes to keep our loved ones safe.
Perfect examples are kidnappings. Many of us really don't take out time to warn our children of the plain and simple fact that "bad" people do exist right here in our own little towns. Time and time again, I have watched news reports on TV where people have spoken to the reporters about how difficult it is to believe that Joe Blow would have ever done such a thing. Afterall, he was such a wonderful person in the community... That is why it is IMPERATIVE that we give our kids the rules, not the suggestions, of who they can take rides from, etc., etc., etc...
Make sure that you discuss a detailed small amount of people who are authorized to give your child a ride home. Don't just tell them that it is okay for them to get in any car with the parents of their friends. Tell them EXACTLY what parents are okay to do this by their names. Too many kids think that if they have seen their parents talking to this person who is offering a ride it is okay to get into their vehicles.
I love how our local school district requires you to fill out paperwork when you are enrolling your child about who is allowed to pick up your child after school. If later on, you decide to send someone else who is not on that list, you MUST contact the school office and advice them of this. It is a great idea to call the school before school has been dismissed for the day and tell the secretary or principal that your child is to ride home with a certain person that day.
Walking around town can also put your child's life into jeopardy. For the most part, our people are going to be totally harmless but there is always the chance that there may be someone out there with no good on his/her mind.
1. To be safe, I recommend that if your child is going downtown, school, etc, that you make sure that they do NOT walk alone and definitely not after dark.
2. Make sure that they know that they need to scream LOUDLY if the stranger, etc makes any moves or tries to get them into their vehicles. A ploy that some dangerous people use is to bring a dog or cat into play. Maybe they'll tell the child that their prized pet is missing and that they need the child to help him/her find it. Make sure that you tell your child to not take this bait.
3. Give them a whistle with a very audible and shrill sound for them to blow.
4. If at all possible, send them with a well-charged cellphone and have emergency phone numbers programmed in so that they do not have to stumble around having to dial numbers for help.
5. Make it a rule that if your chilren are walking to point "A" that they call you as soon as they get there and then call you when they are ready to start back home. Tell them that they need to go straight to point "A" and straight home. NO detours. If they have not called you when you think they should have, call them or go looking for them IMMEDIATELY! Don't take any unnecessary chances.
The life that is saved by these few simple suggestions, may be YOUR child's...

Update on the Missing Murder Suspect
Yesterday, I posted information that the authorities are looking for a "person of interest" in the murder of a 14-year-old girl from Barton County (Great Bend) Kansas. Late yesterday afternoon, the Kansas State Highway Patrol released the news that they have been in contact over the phone with this suspect. At this time, that is all that I know. I sincerely hope that the man turned himself into the police. If I hear anything else, I will post it here.

ANOTHER Product Recommendation...
In the past few months, the makers of FINISH Automatic Dishwasher Detergent came out with a very new kind of soap dispenser. It is a round apparatus that is simply placed on the top rack of dishwashers. It contains a refill of 12 loads worth of soap. Each section of soap is automatically dispensed at the right time. All that a person needs to do is to load the dirty dishes into the dishwasher, run the water at your kitchen sink until it is HOT, close the door and set the dishwasher at the appropriate cycle for your dishes. Walla! You're done until the dishwasher has completed the full cycle and you need to unload your clean dishes.
We've been very pleased with the product's performance. Less dishes than ever need to be re-washed. They all come out sparkling clean now.
As I said, each round dispenser has enough for 12 washloads of dishes. After the magnetic ball shows that all 12 uses have been dispensed, you just pull out the refill cartridge from the permanent holder and throw it away. Then, you place a new fully-loaded refill cartridge in it's place and start all over again.
We purchased our original permanent cartridge that came with ONE refill at Wal-Mart for about $10.00. They also sell the 2-packs of the refills for about the same amount of money. So far, I have only been able to find this product at Wal-Mart though I am sure that it is sold universally.
Give this a try! I think that you'll be quite pleased!

GAP and John and Leslie Niswonger
This morning, Saturday, at 8:00, a large load of GAP members whose ages range from 6th-12th grade, loaded up on a privately-owned bus and headed north to the home of John, Leslie and Dylan Niswonger which is somewhere on the other side of Earth. LOL!!! In actuality, they live in Southern Logan County. The Niswongers have erected a paint ball shooting gallery on some of their pasture land for their family and friends. A couple of weeks ago, Dylan celebrated his birthday with many of his friends there. Everyone just had a blast! The Niswongers are wonderful hosts!!!
Since then, Mr. Kevin Larson who is the youth minister at Leoti's Christ Covenant Church and the FANTASTIC director of Leoti's GAP, made arrangements with the Niswongers to take all interested members to their pasture for more fun and games. The kids just couldn't wait to get started! Our family wants to thank the Niswongers for their very kind generosity and Kevin Larson and GAP for making this a reality! The kids will return to Leoti at noon.

A bit of Advice for Cancer Patients
Last night, I spent almost 4 hours of delightful time talking to one of the dearest ever people in my life. She is currently undergoing cancer treatment as is a good number of people in Western Kansas. She told me that one of her oncologists (cancer doctor) advised her to always request at least two, and if possible, three prescription nausea medications during your treatment. They are not habit forming and will greatly help you through your healing struggle.
Just wanted to pass this information on to all of you...

Former Leoti Artist
As you know, our family has been spending a considerable amount of time at Hays Medical Center lately. HMC lines the hallway walls with large pictures that they have either purchased or have had donated to them. These pictures were painted by area artists. I can appreciate all of them even if they are not exactly a style that I would have purchased for my own home.
Earlier this week, Grandma, Mama and I were on our way to Lori's room when we saw a picture of three sad-faced clowns. The painting is exquisite and really captures your attention for a considerable amount of time. We went to the lower right hand corner to see who the artist was. It was none other than Leoti's late resident, Connie Naiman, who passed away several years ago.
So, if you are ever at HMC and are looking for something to do, (LOL), check out the 2nd floor. You should find this piece of artwork hanging there.

For Sale (BRAND NEW CARPETTING)
A couple in Denver recently purchased a new home. The home had been floored with a tan carpet. Before the couple moved in, they had the carpetting pulled up so that they could lay out hardwood. They then gave the 50' x 80' (4,000 square feet) carpet to a niece who lives in Leoti. The carpetting is in Leoti now. The niece and her family have decided not to lay it down now. Instead, they are asking for bids on it. This carpet comes complete with the padding also.
If you are interested in taking a look at it and/or making an offer on it, please call 620-214-0386. Remember that this carpet has never been used before.

Another thank you
Earlier I told you about a man, Chuck Blass, who spent all of last evening mowing my mother's yard. He did this totally free-of-charge. This afternoon, I learned that we also owe a very big "thank you" to Doug Douglass who mowed all of the lots between his house and my mom's house. Again, he did not ask for any money in return for this.
I think that this says alot for these two men. It also proves to me once again, that Leoti is a GREAT place to live! Here, people take care of each other. Not all communities can brag about that.
Thank you, Guys!!! Your kindness is extremely appreciated!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

For much of the morning, the local news stations have been sending out continuous ticker tape at the bottom of the TV screen alerting us that the man who is a suspect in the murder of a 14-year-old girl from Great Bend, is on the run. He is believed to have stolen a white Ford Explorer (SUV) with large letters that spell out VENTURE on both sides of the vehicle. The license plate is from Great Bend. It is UGI 366.
The suspect is 36-year-old, Adam Longoria. If you see this man, please call 9-1-1 IMMEDIATELY. I would definitely not recommend that anyone try to be a hero with this person.

Great friends!
As you know, Lori has been dealing with a serious health condition for the past few weeks. Her intimate family has neen busy going to Hays, etc during that time. That means that we have not been keeping up with everything that needs to be done.
We just want to thank the super friends who have stepped up to the plate for us! Several of our friends have offered to take care of Leighlyn and Abigayle for us whenever we need to be gone on school days. Others have taken care of our herd while we needed to be gone. You've all just been great!!!
My mom received a wonderful surprise last night. Her yard needed to be mowed. Our son and daughter-in-law had mowed it about 3 weeks ago but it definitely needed it again now. She heard a mower running. When she looked outdoors, she discover that a man who recently moved to town was out mowing her yard. I know that that man reads my blog from time to time. I just want him to know that we appreciate it so very, VERY much!!! Thank you!!!

Thank you!!!
This morning, I received a phone call from Jeanette Tucky-Miller who was calling for Deb Harp. They wanted to offer Deb's hospital bed for Lori when she returns home from the hospital. Our whole family is extremely grateful for this generous offer. Lori is definitely going to accept their offer.
I also want to add that last December when I was busily trying to accumalate Christmas gifts for needy children in our community, that both Jeanette and Deb were instrumental in the giving of these items.
Thank you!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Un-nerving situation
Earlier this week, a man in Leoti received a phone call on his cellphone. Though he did not recognize the phone number that was "supposedly" coming from a home phone number in Leoti, he answered it just as most people would do. Once he answered it, an elderly woman's voice began spewing very rough language at him. She harrassed him by telling him to never call her at home, etc. again. This man kept trying to explain to her that he had not called her, etc., etc., etc.
After he had finally hung up from this harsh woman, he called his wife and told her what had just happened. He relayed the caller's telephone number to her so that she could find out who the caller was. Once she knew who the local woman was, she called the family of her. The couple was not angry with the woman. They were concerned that she might be having some kind of a health problem or medicinal issue so they called the woman's family member in Leoti. The family was shocked to hear of this incident and could not understand what had happened so the wife called a family member Their loved one is quite healthy.
Eventually, it turned out to be a bit of a hoax. One of the man's co-employees had come across this computer program with the woman's recorded message. He decided to send it to his friend's cellphone number. Once it is sent, the database of local phone numbers is called up. One of those unlucky phone numbers was then sent to the recipient's cellphone number which made it look like the harsh call had come from that phone number...
Anyway, I just want you to know that this computer program is basically available to anyone and everyone. If you receive a phone call like this, you may have just been hoaxed.
Anyway, this was just some information that I thought that you needed to be aware of. It can happen to anyone--including YOU!
Thank you!

Lori--Thursday Morning
We spent much of Wednesday with Lori. She was doing better than earlier this week but still has far to go. Her blood must reach a thin level of 2.0-3.0 before she can be released to go home. They hope that it will be that thin by the end of the week. Lori is very strong normally. Since she became so sick, her strength has lessened tremendously. Her doctors have begun physical and occupational therapy on her now. She will continue this once she gets home until she is doing very well as she was before she became ill. She continues to receive Heparin shots (for blood-thinning very quickly) and Coumadin (for blood thinning) in her IV bottle. Once she reaches her optimum level, she will be switched to Coumadin that she will take by mouth daily as I do.
Thank you so very much for your prayers and thoughts!!!

Fruit
Fresh fruit season is here! Right now, you can go the parking lot just between K-Store and the car wash every Thursday morning. This fruit is being brought in from farms and orchards in Colorado. These are the same people who came in last Fall. These people are quite popular in Leoti and sell a good amount of produce every day that they are here! Items include melons, cherries, apples, etc. You can either purchase them by the box or handful--whatever you prefer.

Lori--Tuesday Afternoon
Well, the results are in. She does have a blood clot and it is moving. The doctors have told her that the earliest that she will be able to come home will be this weekend. Right now, they are attempting to install a Central IV line.
To say that we are all upset is a total understatement.
Please pray!
Because of work obligations, etc., Leif and Mama have decided that they will come home tonight and will return to Hays as necessary.

Great news!!! Our prayers are working!!!
As I mentioned an hour ago, Lori was transferred to the CT Lab to see if their technicians could install the much-needed PIK line. Fortunately, one of them got the job done! She has now had her CT Scan and a sonogram of her leg done. One of her caregivers said that it is almost a given that she has a clot somewhere. When they listen to her heartbeat, one side of her body is louder than the other side. We just wait until the results come back. Please continue to pray!
She has received the same fast blood thinners through her stomach through shots as I have had to do several times. These meds are also being piped into her blood veins.
As soon as I know what the results are, I will post them here.
THANK YOU!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Lori--Noon
Folks, I am not getting the kind of news that I want and need on Lori. As of right now, no one has been able to get a PIK line started in Lori. They've been working at that since she arrived at the hospital last night. Without it, they cannot perform a CT Scan which is imperative if they are to look for blood clots. At this time, they have moved her to the CT Lab in hopes that one of the technicians there can get one started.
I just received a phone call from a great friend. He told me that if they cannot get a PIK started, they sometimes end up having to use a cordless drill to put a hole in the patient's leg. As you can guess, that is not a pleasurable alternative.
My mom and Leif are besides themselves with worry. They need your prayers and support right now. I am about to go NUTS. I have called my mom and offered to head to Hays right now. She doesn't want me to do that yet.
Please pray!!!

Part of the furniture is moved.
Stan was not in the least bit impressed with the idea of having to take the window out of our bedroom to get the furniture switched from one bedroom into the other. For awhile we tried to get the furniture from the hallway into our bedroom. We had the same results then as I had had yesterday afternoon--no go. However, Stan had not yet taken out the door from our third bedroom which is now the master bedroom's closet. So we took down the door and the trimwork around the doorway. We needed to do that anyway since Stan will be walling over the doorway. It worked just great! With the extra width in the doorway, things moved along much more smoothly!
We succeeded in getting our dresser and chest of drawers into their bedroom and their dresser and chest of drawers into our bedroom. Tonight, Stan will tear apart the beds and switch them around. He says that that will be MUCH easier than last's night ordeal.

All day, I have been moving furniture from the girls' bedroom to the dining room. I'm still not finished. I kinda gave up after I got the chest of drawers stuck in the main bathroom. About 5 or 6 years ago, Stan and I decided that it was time to renew our bedroom furniture in our room. It has served as well and still looks brand new. Last November, the girls decided that they were ready to move up from bunkbeds to a queen-sized bed. Since their dresser was built in under the bed and at one end, we knew that we needed to opt for at least a matching dresser. We all fell in love with the same set and quickly bought it before someone else plunked money down for it first. A few days later, the headboard, footboard, dresser, mirror, chest of drawers and nightstand were delivered to our home. Given the fact that the furniture is constructed out of solid Walnut, each piece is extremely heavy. The two delivery men took almost a full hour to move the furniture in from the truck and set it up in the bedroom. Even the nightstand required the strength of both delivery men to get it into the bedroom. We decided that once the furniture was in place, it would not be able to be moved for a l--o--n--g time.
As our daughters have grown, their numbers of clothes and toys have also. Little by little, they had smaller empty space in their bedroom. Since we have renovated our bedroom and replaced the original closet with our new walk-in, we have more space than they do. As a result of that, we decided to trade furniture with them. Our bedroom suite, though beautiful, is much smaller than theirs. It makes much more sense to let them have it. Leighlyn and Abigayle are looking forward to the additional space in their room.
This morning, I slaved away moving all three pieces of their furniture except for their beadboard and footboard down the hallway only to discover that it is impossible for me to place their furniture in our bedroom through the doorway. All was not lost though. I have been blessed with a husband who can do anything and everything! He volunteered to take out the large window and our bedroom so that we can move the furniture through the opening. Fortunately, I was even able to find some friends who will help him heave this heavier than most furniture.
So, if you're bored and want to watch something interesting that does not require Cable or Satellite, come on over! Maybe you can even get in on the action! LOL!!!

I HAD a Complaint
Last night, I posted my comments on the loud music that was floating around town. If you read my post, you know that I was irritated about the situation and reported the music whom I BELIEVED was being put out there by someone in my neighborhood. What you do NOT know is the fact that I was in a GREAT deal of pain for most of the day and all evening. If Stan dropped a nail on the floor, I am sure that added noise would have made me feel even worse than I already did.
Today, I received a phone call from Todd Porter who is a owner of the Beer Barn. We had a very civil conversation. At this time, I want to pass his information on to all of you.
First of all, he told me that when he began considering having a concert in Leoti, he went to the Sheriff, the Mayor and various other people in town. He told them that he wanted to do something for the county by bringing in some entertainment for anyone who was interested. Todd would NOT do it if these people were not in favor of it. These people saw nothing wrong with it. (I am definitely NOT against someone doing this either. I've mentioned here before that I am very impressed with the people of Greeley County who go out of their way to provide the best life possible to the town's people.)
Todd explained to me that he wanted to provide some entertainment for anyone and everyone who was interested. They had a very good crowd of people and alot of fun was had by all. I told Todd that I didn't know who the band was who was performing but that I was impressed with their talent. He told me that he had heard the same thing from many of the concert-goers.
Though at the time, I was angered at the volume of the music, I was VERY impressed at a step that the Porters took that I feel was over the top of what they needed to do. They actually had publicized that FREE transportation would be provided to anyone who wanted to come to the concert and then the same transporters would deliver them back to their home. Kudos, Porters!!! That was fantastic!!! Many people were given rides there who would not have been able to be there otherwise. Todd told me that even elderly people were able to be there.
Todd was understandably upset with me for my post. He pointed out something that I had written that was false. I had been told by the Sheriff's Office that the concert would last just until 2:00 a.m. In fact, the concert ended before then. I should have known that considering the fact that liquor cannot be sold after midnight.
Yesterday was not a good day for me. Mid morning, I was pelted with extremely painful muscle spasms that were caused by the rheumatoid arthritis that I have in my back. I immediately went to my medicine cabinet to pull out my handy dandy prescription muscle spasm relaxers and some prescription pain killers. When I have this problem, those are the two things that I reach for first. They normally take care of the problem little by little. Occassionally, they are not enough. At that time, I require shots at the hospital.
Yesterday, I discovered that my bottles of these medications had totally disappeared from view. I was out-of-luck. There was no way that I was going to go to the hospital and force medical personnel to leave their homes just so that I could get new prescriptions. Instead, I popped Tylenol like red hots. Later in the day, we made a special trip to Garden City to pick up some air filters and school supplies, etc. I was extremely thankful that both Home Depot and Wal-Mart provide motorized scooters for people like me who cannot walk through their stores on their own power. By the time that we got home yesterday evening, I was still miserable. I am happy to say that when I woke up this morning, my back was still tender but the sharp pains were, for the most part, gone.
If I had my prior post to write all over again, I would. Today, I feel much better. If the music filled the airwaves now, I would not have been nearly as upset. It is like I told Todd a few minutes ago, I have become extremely sensitive when it comes to music. In our neighborhood, we put up with extremely loud music day in and day out. And, yes, I do turn my neighbors into the S. O. some of the time. So, when the music was filtered into the house, I assumed that someone in our neighborhood was responsible for it.
I have told Todd that I think that it is great that they are bringing entertainment in to town for people of all ages. I did ask him if they could just turn the volume down a bit.

Can you PLEASE donate food in YOUR county?
As we all know, the United States is stuck solidly in a major financial recession right now. Many people including children do not have the money that it takes to purchase food. The USDA (United States Development Agency) is asking for any of us who can to donate any non-perishable food at the local USDA offices throughout the nation. Our office is located in the former Jack's A and W building just to the east of the old junior high building on Hwy 96. Non-perishable foods include ANYTHING that does not require refrigeration or freezing. Canned and packaged products are what they really need. I do not THINK that loaves of bread can be accepted. I don't think that fresh vegetables, fruits or home canned foods can be accepted but you can check on that. You can continue to donate to this much needed fund through Tuesday, August 31st. No donation is too small or too large. Just give whatever you can.
The food donated in Wichita County will be transferred to the Wichita County Ministerial Alliance who will then be in charge of getting it to the folks in Wichita County who need it. For your information, people are also welcome and encouraged to donate food or money to the Ministerial Alliance for this exact purpose.
For more information, please call 375-2332.
Because of these donations, many people will be able to eat who otherwise would not...

Additional Information on Earlier Post
Last week, I posted my comments on the current changes that Leoti residents and business people are doing around town. I invited everyone to drive by Tammy Meyer's house on the corner of "F" and Second Street. Tammy and her gentleman friend have been doing amazing renovations on their home, fence and yard. I just spoke with them a few minutes ago. I urge you to call him at 620-214-3924 if you have any construction, painting, landscaping, plumbing or light electrical work that you need to have done. He will give you a FREE bid! His work is great and speaks for itself.

Margit Dizmang
Prayers are necessary for the recovery of Margit Dizmang, a longtime resident of Leoti. She was hospitalized in Garden City earlier for her third hip surgery. She has not been able to have that surgery yet. Last night, hospital officials put her on a respirator. Today's tests revealed that she only has 30% of her heart pumping on the left side. Jack is staying with her most of the time. A couple of their friends are staying with Margit whenever Jack leaves to get some sleep. He is in definite need of prayers also.
Margit is the wife of Jack and the mother of Heidi and Michael.

Do you speak Danish???
My wonderful brudder-in-law, Leif, is originally from Denmark. He moved to Leoti is the summer of 1981. He came to our country knowing no other English word besides hamburger. Whenever he went to a cafe to eat, the waitresses would always ask him what he wanted. He always said "hamburger". As time passed by, he got really sick and tired of hamburgers so he made up his mind that he was going to learn how to speak English. Through the past 29 years, he has done an excellent job of earning to read, write and speak English. We're all very proud of him!!!
Today, when I was carrying bags from Wal-Mart to the van, I noticed that a car with four young men had parked right next to our van. While I was unloading the bags from the cart into the van, I could hear one of the men talking on his cellphone. He was not speaking loudly. He was mumbling quite abit of the time. After he hung up, I explained to him that my brudder-in-law is from Denmark. I noticed that the young man sounded like Leif. Was it possible that this man was also from Denmark???
The man began chuckling quietly at first and then, over time, began having an outright good laugh over my question. He finally told me that I was the first person to ever ask him if he was Danish. Then...he told me that he was a citizen of (you're gonna laugh at me too!!!) none other than jolly old England!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Oh, mercy!!! It really was NOT my day!!!

Skirt??? Dress??? Maybe not...
Today must have been a Lynn Elder-Blau day. It started off being a little less than great but became even worse as the day progressed.
I needed to drive Lori and Lars to Garden City today for medical purposes. I decided to wear one of my new skirts. Given the fact that I am FAT and am not able to sit lady-like, I choose to wear very long dresses and skirts. This was one of those.
While I was at Wal-Mart, I decided to go to the ladies room before I left the store. As always, I elected to use the handicapped bathroom stall. Before I left the stall, I straightened my skirt and blouse then I proceeded out to the area to wash my hands. I heard someone walking behind me. When I turned to exchange pleasantries, I noticed that she appeared to be a little less than impressed with me for some reason. Immediately, I began thinking that I must have done something wrong. Hmmm. I was right. As much as I detested the idea, I had actually tucked my slip AND my skirt in the back of my panties. Everything was tucked in and made a not so neat bump on my lower back.
While I am falling all over myself to yank everything down where it belonged, I looked into the eyes of the woman behind me. Yep. No doubt about it, she was anything BUT impressed with me. Oh, well. I wasn't all that impressed with her in our minute-long relationship either...

Need a new family member???
Soon, I will be posting information here that describes dogs in Wichita County who are trying to find new families. These animals are either pets that people have surrendered for one reason or another or have been picked up off of the street and no one has claimed them. In most communities, these animals would have been kept in a dog pound for a certain amount of days (usually 7-10) and then would have been destroyed immediately after that.
Here in Leoti, the City Council is very active in trying to place these fellas with loving families.
If you are wanting a puppy or dog and want it before I get the information turned in to me, please call City Hall at 620-375-2341.
Thank you for saving someone's life--literally!!!!!

Update on Lori
Yesterday was a lovely day for Lori! Grandma, Mama, Leif and Lars spent the day with her. Before they left, some great people from Leoti dropped in for a visit. The whole bunch had a wonderful time together! A good deal of conversation and laughter was produced by everyone in the room. Thank you, D and J, for bringing so much enjoyment to Lori and everyone else!!!
Today, I just got WONDERFUL news!!!!!!!!!!!! Lori's doctors have decided that she is well enough to return home TODAY!!! Leif and Lars will pick her up. Of course, Lori is not totally up to her old self but she will get there. She has more appointments scheduled with specialists later this month in Wichita and possibly in Topeka. In case you have lost track of time, Lori has just spent 17 days in the hospital in Hays and almost a week in KU Med Center just before that. She spent practically a month in the hospital!
In the meantime, PLEASE continue to pray for Lori.
Thank you!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Computer Problems
Just to let you know, we are currently having problems with our computer. It has become quite slow and probably needs an overhaul. If we are lucky, that is all that will be needed. We certainly hope that this one does not need to be replaced. In the meantime, I will continue to write on this one until we either get it to a shop or it just dies. So... continue to check into my blog but if it has not been updated for awhile, you will know that I am unable to get onto the internet. If something does happen to the computer, rest assured that I will eventually be back on my blog!

Busy Blau Business
Boy! What a weekend!!! We were busy practically non-stop. The good news is that we got alot of loose ends tied up.
School in Leoti starts tomorrow (Tuesday). We had already purchased new school clothes for the girls but befofre we bought anything else, we wanted to go through their closets to see what needed to be donated and trashed before we purchased anything else. In addition to this major undertaking, we also needed to take out Leighlyn's former closet completely as it is now the entryway from our bedroom into a VERY large walk-in closet and storage room for us. In our former closet, we had a closet organizer which Stan transplanted into their closet on Saturday. It is working well! Anyway, after their clothes disection was completed, we ended up with SEVERAL bags of clothes thatwill be donated to our thrift shop in Leoti tomorrow. Of course, if I discovered any holes or small stains on them, they made their way into the dumpster very quickly! Now we know exactly what other items need to be purchased for school, etc. We were even able to take jeans out of their drawers and put them on their closet shelves that they did not have a week ago. Abigayle is taking one of her newfound empty drawers and converting it into a new storage home for her MANY Barbie dolls, clothes, etc. Folks, if you are currently dealing with a closet that basically just houses a clothes rod or two, I recommend that you check into an organizer. You can spend just a few dollars for one like we bought at Wal-Mart a few years ago or you can move steadily up the hill until you purchase one from closet professionals who will set up your closet just as you want it. Of course, in that case, you have to be willing to pay out hundreds or even thousands of dollars to do that. In any case, you will be able to store a great many more items--comfortably--in your existing closet.
Yesterday afternoon, Stan transplanted the large mirror off of our bedroom wall that was getting ready to be demolished into our main bathroom. He will eventually be trimming it out wth wood and decorative rosettes as he did several years ago to the other cabinets and window trimming when he gutted the room and totally re-did it the way that we wanted it including placing the sink and soaking tub in different locations than before.
After that, he knocked down the wall that seperates our bedroom from the new closet. Whoa!!! What a difference!!!!!!!!!!!!! I would like to tell you that the project is completed but I cannot. He still needs to hang another clothes rod that will be about 12 feet long. He hopes to do that this week in the evenings. Next weekend, he plans on removing the door from the new closet that goes into the hallway and replacing it with a new wall.
Anyway, we made great progress during the past couple of days.

Have bugs???
It is that time of the year when the people from the North begin to migrate to their homes in the South. It is also the season when the insects, spiders, ants, roaches of all kinds, crickets..., begin migrating to their more comfortable digs, YOUR house and business. Therefore, now it is time for you to do all that you can do to ward off these nasties from entry into your home.
I just observed something outside that reminded me of a piece of advice that I received from insecticide representative MANY years ago. We were living in a different house back then and were not old enough to really care about how our exterior property looked. For a few weeks, we had been dealing with spiders, etc in our house. We finally gave up and called for professional help.
As soon as the help arrived, he gave me some instructions that I will never forget. He told me that before he would spray our house, we had to cut down the grasses, weeds, foilage of any kind other than bushes that were nearby our home. He explained that those things were natural harbors for insects, mice, rats, skunks...even SNAKES! As soon as their natural habitation was gone, they would scatter. Yes. Some would still come indoors but many would scamper far away. Once the exterior was clean, the pesticide personnel would return and go to work.
The same man told me that they are oftimes called to spray for pests of all kinds that are lurking in cluttered and dirty homes. They do the same thing then also. Tell the homeowner that there is no sense in spraying, etc until the human habitat is clean and not so cluttered. As long as clutter remains, bugs and mice have access to coziness. The clutter also protects the unwanted guests from coming in contact with the poison.
Today, I watched as a man ate weeds next to his house. I was close enough to him to see LOTS of big brown spiders climb up towards his roof. Others scattered in his grass. Made me thankful that our grass, etc was cut close to the ground around our house. However, we have a large mum and rose bed right against part of our house. Yesterday, when I was weeding it, I noticed more than our fair share of bugs also. Ugh!!! We are just getting close to mum season. Our mums are loaded with buds. I want to wait until after they have bloomed and been enjoyed before I cut them to the ground.
This is also the time of the year when homeowners call on professionals to prepare their homes against mouse invasion. You may want to consider that also. The people who come here look throughout the house and look for any holes that could welcome mice indoors. They then plug them with steel wool. People also put out poisons such as D-Con or mice traps of all kinds including cages that catch the mice so that the homeowner can return the mice to the country and set them free.
Because of the extreme heat that we have been through recently, I have not been able to keep up with my mowing and weed-eating as I normally do. It didn't take long for everything to reach for the skies. So, for the past 2 days whenever it was cool, I mowed and ate weeds, mowed and ate weeds... While I was getting back to nature, I had the opportunity to meet a few insects on our property. I am also a person who truly believes in various changes in nature that are supposed to signal what kind of season we will have following this season. In the past, I have been told that if caterpillars are light-colored, we will have a warm, dry winter. If the caterpillars are thick, dark and wooly, we can expect alot of cold and snow. Hmmm. I am on the fence this time around because I have seen about the same amount of each type. I guess time will have to tell.
I have noticed a huge amount of mosquitoes this year. Some people have told me that that is a sign that it will be a hard winter. Our hedge in the front yard is alive with the loud buzzing of bees and mosquitos. That may be a sign of what is to come also but I do not know.
So, anyway, I recommend that we do whatever we can to prepare our homes for the well-being of our families now. Believe it or not, winter is just around the corner.

Need work around the house, etc done???
Fall is just around the corner. Many of us are in need of prepping the exterior and interior of our homes, etc. Maybe landscaping needs to be done. Whatever you need done, give Leroy a call at 620-214-3924. He is a good friend of Tammie Meyers who has lived in Leoti for many years now. If you'll just call him and tell him what you need done, he will give you a free bid.
Drive by Leroy and Tammie's house at the northwest corner of "F" and Second Streets. You'll see how well he has been painting their house, white-washing their fence and landscaping the yard. Tammie has told me that Leroy is a hard worker and can and will do any kind of work out there.
If you are like me, it is easier to go by simple directions instead of street addresses. To get to Tammie and Leroy's house, go two blocks west of Wheatland Electric.
Thank you!!!

Good News on Our A/C Problems!!!!!!
A new Heat/AC company came over yesterday afternoon. Two men from a company based in Garden City were here and really looked everything over well. They had the OPPORTUNITY to feel what we were talking about themselves. It was 100 outside and almost 90 inside.
They said that our A/C unit is working well and is big enough for our house. So then, what is the problem??? When they came into our dining room where the air breather is, they immediately knew that it was way too small. They will order the grate for the appropriate sized vent. Stan has offered to open up the vent himself so that will save us some money. (It is GREAT to have a husband who can do practically everything!!!)
Stan also mentioned to them that a great deal of cold air is being lost because of leaks around the ducts that come into the house. They are going to get Stan some sleeves to place inside each duct which should alleviate that issue. That should help to cut our winter's gas bill also. The heat will not be going under the house anymore.
We certainly appreciate the knowledge of these men!!!
Bottom line, it looks like our problems should become obsolete very soon. Thanks to the Good Lord!!! About an hour before the representative from the company called me, I had just spoken to God and had asked him for help with this issue. Though I have tremendous faith in Him, I was still totally shocked when I received the phone call. You see, this company had been recommended to me months ago when our problems began. Of course, I called them at that time but they were already behind on some major commercial jobs that they were already working. Simply said, God IS listening to us whenever we come to Him in prayer...

Congratulations, Leif and Lori!!!
Leif and Lori's daughter, Marlene, gave birth to her fourth child this morning! She is a bouncing little girl named Gracie Kathleen. She has one older sister, Justice, and two brothers, Tyler and Bryson, anxiously awaiting her at home! Gracie was late getting here by a couple of weeks. Seems she was just waiting for her big brother, Ty's, birthday so that they could always share the same day of celebration!
This is not a first of the Christensen family. Leif was born on his mother's birthday. Years later, Leif and Lori's son, Lars, was born on the birthday of his grandmother and father. Pretty Kool, huh?
Congratulations!!!

Leoti's St. Anthony Church Goes Through Major Renovation
Just a few minutes ago, I FINALLY got on the internet. A lady who reads my blog had read my posting about various renovations being done throughout Leoti. She sent me this which I found to be quite interesting so I wanted to pass the information on to all of you. The church looks BEAUTIFUL!!! I don't think that I have ever seen it looking this good!
Lynn, That was a nice article on your blog about the town remodelling, and so very true, lots of improvements helping keep Leoti updated. However, have you been by St. Anthony's church recently? We just finished a major refurbishing, using the stucco that you mentioned. Arturo Ayala gets the credit for that, and he's done probably all the other stucco work around town. Our parish council started looking at how to repair the old blue tile St. Anthony art work, and one thing led to another. Due to years of leaking, it was decided a major restructuring was required;thus we ended up, on professional advice, removing all the tile and having new walls built and stucco'ed. Looking for a new symbol for the church took time, and after many consultations with professional artists and religious art sales companies, we searched near home and talked to Double C powdercoating. They created the IHS design to give the re-do a final touch! We have received many compliments on the new, updated look.

Take a look around town
It is a proven fact that towns where routine home and business maintenance and renovations are not done fail quickly. Western Kansas towns are really prone to failure at this time. Yesterday, I received a phone call from a member of our society who encouraged me to take a drive past Mr. Dwight Case's home on West Broadway Street. The caller had been keeping a watchful eye on the progress that has been made on Dwight's home this summer. (I had also!) For as long as I can remember Dwight living in his home, he has ALWAYS maintained a well groomed, lovely yard. This past Spring, contractors removed his former porch and added a very large porch with railing around it's entirity. To my eye, it looks like the work has now been completed. The condition of his house and yard really say alot to people travelling through our fine town.
Several houses in town are currently undergoing painting processes. Tammy Meyer's home on the corner of "F" and Second Street is one such home. Practically overnight, half of it's body has been painted. As if painting is not enough to tackle, she has also tilled up her yard and has planted grass and a corner flower garden. Even without the project being finished, the house looks totally different!
Tammy is moving along MUCH faster than we are! We started our paint job over a month ago but because of various committments, it is still far from being finished. Ugghh...
Over the past two years, several homeowners have elected to have contractors stucco their homes. I am sure that in the beginning, many of us really had to wonder why modern day people would do that considering the fact that stucco cracks and falls off of buildings over time. Well, the reason is that NEW stucco has been formulated which is much sturdier than the original and will stay neatly in place for much longer. Plus the new formula actually adds insulation properties. As I write this, I am thinking of the Doug and Dawn (Haverfield) McKinney house which is just a little over a block further west of Dwight's house. It was always a beautiful house but it has much more substance than ever today.
Take a gander by John and Liz Gould's house sometime. Wow!!! It looks like their home and yard should be featured in a house and garden magazine!!! Their house is located straight south of the ballpark. It is difficult to believe that just 2 years ago, nothing was located on their lots besides evergreen trees and alot of buffalo grass.
Over the past couple of years, business owners from property by the post office that is owned by Bruce and Rhonda Endorf clear to the south side of town at Russell and Jolene (Nodine) Bernings store have undergone dramatic facelifts. Russ and Cathy (Marcy) Wiegers brought their external renovations to the interior as well. They own Western Hardware and Lumber yards.
The massive improvements along with new decorative streetlights on Main and Broadway, plant boxes in the business district, etc have really beautified Leoti! Honestly, I am very proud of how our downtown area and much of the private neighborhoods look today!
I must rain on one parade though. Over the past year, Dave and Jenet Gardner have really spruced up their Northside Auto Parts Store. They've replaced windows, doors, sign, etc. Unfortunately, the railroad property just to the north of them looks AWFUL! I don't know why the railroad is not doing a much better job of maintaining the grounds around the railroad tracks. The weeds have been allowed to soar and thicken. There has always been a great deal of foot traffic over the railroad tracks. I wouldn't allow my kids to walk over the tracks at this time. In addition to it being a disgusting eye sore, I think that it could very easily be a danger.
Enough of the doom and gloom...
Anyway, I want to thank each and every person out there who is doing his or her part to make Leoti a beautiful place to live!!!

Lori--Wednesday Evening
Boy! It has been a long day for Lori. Little by little, she is being prepped to be discharged from the hospital in Hays. One of her doctors was in late this afternoon to go into greater detail with her about what lays ahead for all concerned. As you know, she is hooked up to all kinds of tubes. None of them can be shut off abruptly. It will take time as the amounts of the substances must be reduced slowly so that no damage is done to various organs.
She has been surviving on IV nutrients for almost 2 weeks now. Yesterday, she began receiving liquid foods. Little by little and lot by lot, those IV nutrients will be minimized and the liquid to soft foods to regular foods will be maximized until all IV nutrients are gone and she has proven that she can handle regular food normally once again. The doctor thinks that that will take at least one more week.
A repeat CT Scan is scheduled for tomorrow to see how well all of the infection has reacted to the antibiotics. If the abscesses are still not healed completely, arrangements will be made to have a radiologist drain them.
She may need to be transferred to a hospital in Topeka next week.
It is quite easy to see why Lori's morale has practically bottomed out for her. She is halfway across the state from all of her family who she normally gets to see on a daily basis. She realizes that life will not go back to normal as soon as she is released from the hospital. A lengthy recovery process will be necessary after she has at least one operation. Right now, she is scheduled to meet with 3 or 4 other specialists in the Wichita and Topeka areas.
Honestly, I don't know how she is handling everything as well as she is. In early April of 2002, I was lifewatched from Scott City to Denver in very serious condition that involved a heart condition. On the 17th of April, our Angel, Abigayle, was delivered there in the same hospital. A week later, I was discharged to come home. We anticipated that I would return to Denver in 3 months to have my heart surgery. Instead, my heart went downhill much quicker than anticipated and I had to be lifewatched back to Denver on May 15th and surgery was on the 23rd after I had been stabilized. Two and a half weeks later, I was released to go home. That was it. It was very tough at the time but it was nothing in comparison of what all Lori has staring her in the eyes. I am required to meet with my cardiologist, neurologist often. I have yearly CT Scans and monthly blood tests that are necessary. That's no big deal really. In Lori's case, she will be vacating one hospital and going to the next one immediately.
All said, Lori arrived in Hays with only a few days worth of life left. Thanks to the Almighty Lord, she was given a new lease on life. It is ignorant to think that she would be well and strong in just a couple of weeks. Situations like this just do not happen that way. In the meantime, Lori needs all of the prayers and support that we all can give to her. Once she is home, she will still be weak. Again, she will need prayers and daily support.
Lori and her entire family want me to relay to you that without you and your prayers, Lori would not still be here today. So, you can see why a simple Thank You seems too very minute at this point but it is the best that we can do at this time.
Thank you!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Lori's Update--Wednesday Morning
Lori is doing better. More test results came in yesterday. At least one surgery is in her near future. Her battle has just begun with another culprit that was just discovered. She'll do just fine with all of the prayers that are being sent for her!
At this time, we still do not know when she will be released to come home. She will be meeting with specialists in Wichita next week. It is entirely possible that she will not be allowed to come home until after that.
Good news! Her IV nutrients went to getting to "eat" liquids yesterday. Her lunch consisted of broth, fruit juice and a few squares of jello. Nothing really tasted good to her. As time goes by, she will move to soft foods and then eventually to normal foods.
She is able to move around more now and sit in chairs longer than before. That should alleviate her pneumonia in no time. Many bedridden people face problems with pneumonia.
Please continue praying!!!
