Joseph E. Winter, age 89, passed away on Monday, August 16, 2010 at the Wichita County Health Center in Leoti, Kansas. Joe was born August 11, 1921 at Windthorst, Texas, the son of Albert & Mary Caecilia Stanzel Winter. He was a farmer, stockman and dairyman had been a Wichita County resident since 1947 moving from Windthorst, Texas. He served in the United States Army Air Corp during World War Two with the 279th Bomb Group in the European theater.
Joe was a member of St. Mary Catholic Church and the Knights of Columbus, both of Marienthal, Kansas.
On February 8, 1949 he married MaryAnn Baker at Marienthal, Kansas Joe’s surviving family members include- Wife MaryAnn Winter- Leoti, Kansas Five sons and their wives- J. Alan & Rita Winter- Cheney, Kansas Tony G. & Jennifer Winter- Leoti, Kansas Randy A. & Barbara Winter- Livingston, Montana Jim B. & Carla Winter- Columbia, Missouri Sydney P. & Julie Winter- Chandler, Arizona One daughter and her husband- Caecilia M. & Terry Gropp- Scott City, Kansas One brother- Albert Winter- El Campo, Texas One sister- Matlida Danler- Kinsley, Kansas Sixteen Grandchildren and nine great grandchildren A granddaughter, Annie Winter, preceded him in death.
Vigil Services will be held at 7:00 pm Wednesday, August 18, 2010 at St. Mary Catholic Church in Marienthal, Kansas.
Funeral Mass will be held at 10:30 am Thursday, August 19, 2010, at St. Mary Catholic Church in Marienthal, Kansas, with Father Mike Helms officiating.
Burial will be in St. Mary Cemetery in Marienthal, Kansas with full military honors provided by the United States Army Funeral Detail from Fort Riley, Kansas.
Friends may call from Noon to 5:00 p.m. Wednesday at Price & Sons Funeral Home in Leoti, Kansas.
Memorials may be given to the Joseph E. Winter Memorial Fund in care of Price and Sons' Funeral Home.
