I've mentioned this on here before and I have found that there are a lot of people out there who would be thrilled to trade houses with other vacationers for a vacation. A couple of our relatives who live in New York City "traded apartments" with a family who lived in Paris last Summer. No cash exchanged hands. Our relatives spent two weeks in France at the apartment that belonged to the French people who were vacationing in their NYC apartment.
Honestly, it makes a considerable amount of sense to just trade houses for a few days in order to save the money that you would otherwise be spending on hotels or motels. However, I would definitely do a considerable amount of research on this just to be on the safe side. In my opnion, I would be concerned with the possibility of someone stealing our belongings or leaving a mess or damage on our property.
For more information, go to www.homeaway.com . Once on the website, you will be able to find vacation rentals, property managers, homes for sale, list your own property. You'll find over 200,000 vacation rentals to choose from. Typically, you can also rent houses on this site for less than half price of what you would spend on a hotel for the same amount of time.
There is a spot on this website where you can type in your vacation destination. Answer what date you would need to use the property. Then, answer when the date would be when you would be leaving the traded or rented property.
No matter what, this is kinda interesting...

That is interesting. My folks rent a place so they know what you mean by "being very careful" about just who you deal with. They've been mostly fortunate - and of course repeat renters are tbe best - they become friends and are known to be gentle with the property.
