Last weekend, Stan repaired a major leak under the floor in the master bathroom that we had no idea even existed until he pulled up a piece of weak floor that he needed to replace. Before we discovered the leak, the only thing that we thought might have caused the weakened floor was age. It is a great feeling knowing that the leak has now been remedied and the floor has been repaired!
Last summer, we converted the smaller bedroom next to our room into a large walk-in closet. Stan took out the door that had been used to get in and out of the room to the hallway since the house was new. He removed its closet that was built between our room and the other bedroom so that our new entry into the new closet could be built. But when he removed the closet doors, etc., he discovered a hole in the floor enderneath it. It was caused by a water leak from under the master bathroom sink a few years ago. Since we never walked into the closet, we never knew that there was a problem there. Since we no longer have any carpetting in our house, we couldn't just replace the carpet over the top of the patches. We were left with what looked like an ugly patchwork quilt. As you have gotten to know me, you have learned that I can not deal with imperfections in our home. So Stan began covering the entire bedroom floor with a wood product that will strengthen the floor for many years ahead of us. Of course, it is not very handsome and contains MANY splinters that none of us were looking forward to pulling out of our feet... Yesterday, we managed to cover over 2/3 of the older floor. Today the last bit will be laid then we will be covering the whole thing with laminate.
In the meantime, much of what is normally located in the bedroom has had to be temporarily moved to other rooms in the house. Remember 3 weeks ago today, construction and plumbing repair began on our main bathroom? At that time, our stool, soaking tub and vanity with the sink had to take up residence in the dining room. Of course, they were restored to where they belonged as soon as Stan had replaced the old flooring with the new and had covered the whole thing with the product, Allure. Now, the dining room is home to two very large plants that normally live in the bedroom along with chairs and other pieces of furniture that we could not fit into our closet. Dust from the repairs has spread pretty much around the house... Hopefully after today, everything will be put back into place where it belongs in our bedroom. After that, I can get the house cleaned and restored to normalcy.
Next project? For awhile anyway, work inside the house will be done. Next weekend, we will be enlarging the dogs' play area outdoors and be doing our spring cleaning in the yard. I assume that in a month or so, we will probably be ripping everything out of the master bathroom so that we can strengthen the floor in there before we begin replacing the current bathtub in there with a large shower that we will be using ceramic tile in. Originally, the tub was installed over the top of a fairly tall wooden platform. We can't explain why the builders did this. We just know that it is getting more difficult to enter and exit the tub the older that we get. Since we never use the tub in there anyway, it makes since to just convert the whole thing into a large shower.
We are looking forward to finishing this project as quickly as possible but it is always nice to have everything looking better than ever before. Besides, Stan and I always enjoy getting to do projects together! Well, that is except for when I make mistakes such as yesterday when I flubbed up a few screws when I placed them in the new flooring. Stan wasn't too impressed with me then... LOL!!!
