Joseph York--Garden City and Dighton

(April 26, 1913 - April 15, 2011)


Joe York was born April 16, 1913 in a sod house near Burdett and lived 63 of his nearly 98 years in Garden City. He was a loving and caring father, grandfather and community member.

Joe and Sarah Boyce married Sept l, 1936 in Jetmore, where he taught school. Joe served as principal in Sitka and Offerle before turning to farming. He farmed in Finney, Lane and Prowers (CO) counties. He taught again at Jennie Barker School in 1957-58.

The family moved to Garden City in 1948. Joe and his late wife Sarah were members of the Presbyterian Church, the Buffalo Stompers square dance club and were active in 4H for many years. They taught many young 4H’ers to square dance.

He is survived by daughters Livonia Lowe and husband Darrell of Bellevue WA, Kathy Smith and husband Larry of Calumet City IL, sons Leroy and wife Joyce (Dechant) of Fort Worth TX, Larry and wife Mary (Gibson) of Florissant MO and Robert and wife Rosemary (Dimmitt) of Garden City, 12 grandchildren and 22 great grandchildren. He is preceded in death by his wife Sarah, his parents Harry Brown York and Elsie Burnett York, sisters Ferne McCoy Brent, Stella Sebes and Ellen York, and brothers Oliver and George York.

A memorial service will be held at the Garden City Presbyterian Church on Monday, April 18th, at 2 p.m. Memorials may be made to the church or the Finney County 4H Council, both in care of Price and Sons Funeral Home, 620 North Main, Garden City.
