Sirens went off this evening and most of our volunteer firemen headed northwest of Leoti as quickly as they could. Evidentally, lightning had struck grassland. The end result was that the abandoned St. Teresa Catholic Church has now been destroyed.
Last Sunday, all of our kids and I drove past this church while we were out looking for Devil's Dip. Even though its stained glass windows had been removed, it was still a beautiful sight.
There is a cemetery just a few feet from the church. I have not heard any reports that it is in danger of any fire.
It is always a sad thing when historical buildings are destroyed. I feel especially sad for the people who attended church there. The good thing is that the church will live on in the memories of those people.

Hmmm. I posted here a couple days ago and I don't see it now. So here's a re-run: Does anyone know of any pictures or video that are available on the web of the church after it burned? (I have plenty of pictures of it before it burned. 8^) There is a history of the church in the St. Anthony's history book from 30? years ago. As I recall, the church that stood on that spot burned twice before, at least once in a prairie fire which was described by eyewitnesses.
