Incident at Main and Broadway Intersection

I received a phone call a short time ago from a disgusted witness who had watched as an oil derrick being hauled South, clipped off one of the major highway signs, and drove right on through without stopping to try to get it repaired, etc. A pilot car was in front of the truck and another one behind the truck.

The person who told me the story told me that he believed the truck driver had to have seen the damage that he had just done. Even if he had not, one or both of the pilot vehicle drivers should have seen the incident. Not one of these drivers stopped. They just headed right on down the road.

As it turns out, the person who called me was following the truck and it's pilots. Given the fact that the derrick was blocking the highway, it looked like it would be a very long trip from Leoti to Lakin when the person who called me would be able to turn off of the highway. But that was not to be the case... Fortunately, the Wichita County Sheriff, Randy Keeton, received information on the incident evidentally. He went after the trio and pulled them to the side of the road.

The man who called me told me that he doubted any of these three drivers were very happy to see Mr. Keeton. LOL!!!

So, here's two pieces of good news. 1. I assume that the company hauling the derick will be held responsible for their damage--not the taxpayers. 2. The man who I talked to was able to pass the rig and get on down the road. Ha! Ha!

  2. Isn't it funny how little things like that are missed so quickly? I am glad that Randy tracked the people down!!! VLE-B
