Kansas State Tornado Drill Postponed

Today was originally scheduled for statewide tornado drills in Kansas. Because of the fact that most of the state of Kansas is under cloudy skies, it has been rescheduled for Thursday at 1:30.

News has been released that the rarest and most dangerous tornadoes, F5s, are much more plentiful in Kansas than anywhere else. Kansas ranks number 1 on the Fujita Scale. Texas and Iowa are ranked number 2. Because of the fact that Kansas is notorious for F5s, we need to be well trained in safety precautions, say weather officials. To this date, there is no information available as to why Kansas has more F5s than anywhere else, including Texas and Oklahoma. Many of these tornadoes are more than a MILE wide. Because of that, we usually have plenty of warning ahead of time so that we can obtain necessary shelter.

Kansas' latest F5 was the one that struck Greensburg on May 4th of 2007. Eleven people lost their lives there.

An F4 will level a framed building. An F5 will "clean up after itself" because it carries the debris elsewhere. One F5 in Kansas recently lifted an El Camino off of the ground and carried it MORE THAN A MILE before it laid it down.

If you can, attend tornado safety meetings as soon as you can.

This information is available on the WeatherBug Website.
