Military Bases in Western Kansas

I received a comment from a man who is wanting to know if there were any military bases in this area during World War ll. I have been told that there was an Army base in Goodland. Was it Army or Air Force that was based just east of Garden City where the airport is now?

If you have any information on any of these bases, please leave a comment here or send me an email to slblaus@gmail.com .

Thank you so much!!!

  1. Thank you VLE-B! With your help pointing me in right direction, I found out that Goodland Municipal Airport also known as Renner Field provided contract glider training to the United States Army Air Forces, 1942-1943.

Training provided by William A. Ong under AAFTC 22d Glider Training Detachment. Used primarily C-47 Skytrains and Waco CG-4 unpowered Gliders. Training began on 8 June 1942. The mission of the school was to train glider pilot students in proficiency in operation of gliders in various types of towed and soaring flight, both day and night, and in servicing of gliders in the field.

So chances are my great-uncle William was there in some capacity with the Army Air Force.

    :) Many, many thanks!!
