As of today, Tuesday, March 1st, students of the Wichita County J/S High School have begun eating in the new gymateria! I've been told that the building is quite impressive. The building has a large room that is going to be used as a lunchroom and as a gymnasium. Recently, I have heard complaints that the taxpayer's money was being wasted on a gym that is not the size of a regulation basketball court. Folks, it was never intended to be a gym suitable for basketball games. When the building is not being used for lunch, it will be used for grade school physical education classes. Wichita County can hold basketball games in the high school and in the former junior high building. It was imperative for the three levels of education, elementary, middle and high schools to have three gyms available for physical education classes throughout the school day. Until the school year, 2009-2010, each of the three operating schools had its own gym.
There are also two restrooms available in the gymateria dome. Unfortunately, things got off to a rough start where they are concerned. Students used the restrooms for the first time today. Unfortunately, a nasty mess was made when the sewer line became plugged and "erupted" all over the nice new floor. I am sure that the problem has probably been fixed by now. There are always stumbling blocks in new buildings, etc.
People who have been in the lunchroom/gym have told me that it appears to be H--U--G--E--much larger than the R.B.S.E.S. lunchroom. The walls are blue and the ceiling is black. As of next summer when the 2011-2012 school year begins, all Wichita County students who are enrolled in the public school system, will be receiving their lunches in that one building.
It is awesome getting to see the fruits of the labors of so many people who have worked on these new domes since 2009!
