My grandmother made the best pot of ham and beans out there! In addition to her ham and beans, she added 1-2 tablespoons of sugar and salt and pepper to the other ingredients when she first started them to cooking. Your beans don't taste sugary as you might expect. They just have a better richness about them. She always served cornbread and fried potatoes with them. Hmmm...sounds so good, I'm going to start a crockpot full of them for dinner tonight!!!
